. The Mace Originally a weapon, the mace has evolved into an ornamental symbol of authority carried before a public official. This sign ffiof o ce is carried into such gatherings as the British Parliament and the Virginia General Assembly, as well as the Commencement exercises of Rappahannock Community College. King George artist and craftsman Richard Gros constructed the symbolic staff in 1988. Gros used walnut, cherry, holly and pine wood from the two RCC campuses. The sections of the mace include representative features of the college: the flame of learning, the scroll of knowledge, the college gull, and the service region map. In this formal setting, the symbolism of bearing the mace offers the honoree an opportunity to demonstrate service and leadership to the college, while the college recognizes that individual for service and leadership already given.

The Mace Bearer Matthew Brent Faculty Senate President Matt Brent joined the faculty at RCC in the fall of 2012. He holds a BA in History from Christopher Newport University, an MSEd from Walden University, an MA in History & Political Science and a Graduate Certificate in English from Western New Mexico University, and a Ph.D in Leadership from the University of the Cumberlands. Prior to joining RCC, he taught with Lancaster County Public Schools. During his time at RCC, Brent has participated in a variety of educational initiatives. For example, in 2013, he served on the Virginia Community College System’s inaugural team that developed Open Education Resource materials for various courses, including his own HIS 101 – History of Western Civilizations, and in 2015 he reinstated the VCCS History Peer Group for faculty where he served as chair for several years. Brent is also active with RCC’s educational program at Haynesville Correctional Center. Brent currently serves as the Faculty Senate President. He has also served in administrative roles at the college, such as Assistant and Interim Academic Dean. He has served as the Discipline Lead for History & Political Science since 2013. In addition to his roles at RCC, Brent is also active as a community servant. A member of the Kiwanis Club of the Northern Neck, he is currently in his 2nd term as president and is the Lt. Governor-Designate for Division 12. An alumnus of the Kiwanis Second International Service Leadership Programs, Brent currently serves as the Administrator for the Capital District of Circle K International, the collegiate level of Kiwanis, and mentors student leaders in chapters across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. A Lancaster native, Brent currently lives in Northumberland with his wife, two children, and four cats. Singing of the National Anthem Kelsey Henry Inaugural IDEAL Awards

* Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society ✙ Area Health Education Centers Scholar O United States Veteran THE ATTIRE OF THE GRADUATES The graduates of Rappahannock Community College wear black robes. Those wearing gold tassels have completed their studies with grade point averages of 3.2 or higher on a four-point grading scale. The graduation honors are defined as follows:

GRADE POINT AVERAGE DEGREE RECIPIENT HONOR CERTIFICATE RECIPIENT HONOR 3.8 to 4.0 Summa Cum Laude With Highest Honor 3.5 to 3.79 Magna Cum Laude With High Honor 3.2 to 3.49 Cum Laude With Honor The Rappahannock Community College Board presents a medallion to each Summa Cum Laude associate degree graduate. Students receiving degrees have studied the equivalent of two years to earn an associate degree in applied science or an associate degree in arts and sciences. Degree candidates wear a hood displaying the college colors of blue and green. Students receiving certificates have studied the equivalent of one year of full-time study. Students .receiving career studies certifcates have studied the equivalent of one semester of full-time study

Due to the time requirements, this program must be printed before the final list of degree candidates can be certified. The exclusion of the name of a student is not to be taken as an official status as a non-graduate, nor is the inclusion of the name of a student to be taken as certification of official status as a graduate. THE TRADITION OF ACADEMIC ATTIRE The wearing of cap and gown by faculty and other dignitaries in the commencement ceremony originated in the universities of the Middle Ages. Caps and gowns have been worn in the United States since colonial times. The American Intercollegiate Code of 1894 standardized the styles of the academic attire (the gown, the hood, the cap, and the tassel). The gown is generally black, and its sleeves indicate the degree held by the wearer. The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and twin pleats in the front. The master’s gown has sleeves that drape to the knee. The doctoral gown has full bell-shaped sleeves and three velvet bars on each sleeve. The doctoral robe has additional pleating and, on the front, full-length velvet panels from the shoulders to the hem. The velvet bars and panels may be in black or in the color of the wearer’s field of learning. The most distinctive feature of the attire is the hood. This separate ornamental fold of cloth worn around the neck drapes down the back of the gown. It is a visual representation of the academic degree and the college or university where the degree was earned. The velvet band on the hood differs in size according to the degree level and in color according to the field of learning. The velvet band is two inches wide on the bachelor’s hood, three inches wide on the master’s hood, and five inches wide on the doctoral hood. The length of the hood also varies with the degree. The farther the hood drapes down the back of the robe, the more advanced is the degree of its wearer. The doctoral hood generally is four feet in length. The official color(s) of the college or university where the degree was earned are represented in the lining of the hood. The cap, usually a black mortarboard, symbolizes the books of scholars and the tools of master masons. The tassel is usually black or a color symbolizing the field of higher learning; some master’s tassels are white, and gold tassels may be worn by holders of doctoral degrees.
