WATER BOWL PROJECT - WATER BOWL FOR ANIMALS & BIRDS

Blue Cross of India's annual project was a huge success, once again. Free water bowl distribution has engaged a lot of volunteer participation and helped thousands of animals quench their thirst.

TACTICAL RESCUES

Animals are often found trapped in ways that they cannot get out by themselves. Poor urban landscaping, ignorance about the dangers of improper construction and lack of care for one's animals are just some of the reasons.

Some staff members and volunteers of Blue Cross of India are trained to rescue animals from such situations. They work as a team and save lives. This is apart from the thousands of routine rescues done by the BCI rescue teams in and around the city.

Over the past year, we've successfully executed many tactical rescues that includes rescuing four goats from a cliff, multiple cats, dogs and cattle from wells and other accident cases. Here are a few such rescues:

54th Annual Report - Blue of Cross India

COW REMOVED FROM CEMENT TANK

It was one of the hottest noons in Chennai. We were baffled when we saw the cow's condition. She occupied most of the space, was trapped in a six-foot-deep pit and fixed in one position. Moreover, she had a cataract in one eye.

We used ropes in place of webs due to lack of space. Her rescue operation was divided in two groups. One team had to lift her weight while the other had to pull her out of the pit. The first team used logs connected to the belt while the second used a pulley system. We are grateful to the locals who helped us.

SIX BUFFALOS RESCUED FROM MRTS AFTER A TRAIN ACCIDENT

Six buffaloes that lost their way and made it on to the track were hit by an early morning train. Passersby informed us around 9 a.m. and we began the rescue soon after.

While two buffalos were found dead, others suffered pelvic and spinal injuries in which one went through a severe miscarriage.

54th Annual Report - Blue of Cross India

It was saddening to see how lack of protection in urban landscapes caused so much pain. The rescue operation took lace for 16 hours where our volunteers, staffand veterinarians worked to bring them down safely.

A MOTHER AND HER CALF RESCUED FROM A WELL

A calf fell into a narrow 15 feet deep well. On top of her, her mother fell too. They were stuck there for six hours before we were informed.

`We rushed to the location and immediately pulled them to safety. Our rescuers used webs to reduce strain on the animal. Luckily they were uninjured and handed over to the owners soon after.

OUR VOLUNTEERS-PILLARS OF SUPPORT!!!

An Animal Welfare Organization can do a lot more with the support of volunteers. We are indeed lucky to have many volunteers who give their time, efforts and resources to help us help the animals. We regularly conduct volunteer induction sessions at our shelter to guide them to help us in our shelter. Trained and skilled volunteers often go for conducting special rescues with our General Manager (Rescues). We are thankful to all of our volunteers for offering us their services.

CATTLE CONSUMING PLASTICS – PLASTIC COW

Rumen Impaction is a condition which results from the accumulation of the indigestible materials like Plastic Bags, Jute Ropes, Leather piece etc in the rumen which interfered with flow of ingesta leading to distension of the rumen and passing of scanty or no faeces. The factors that are responsible for higher incidence of non-metallic foreign bodies is due to rapid industrialization, increase in the garbage disposal mostly in plastic bags and letting the animal loose for grazing , insufficient feeding of the animals by the owner. Moreover the other reason also non-availability of Pasteur and Grazing land due to urbanization and rearing of cattle in the Metropolitan cities like Chennai and Owners letting the animal loose in the Cities.

Ingestion of metallic foreign bodies in adult dairy cattle can result in a variety of affections and syndromes that may impair reticuloruminal motility, Traumatic Reticulo Peritonitis caused by penetration of a metallic foreign body through the reticular wall causing perireticular inflammation.

Emptying the rumen by Rumotomy is considered as rapid and quick remedy for relieving the problem of Rumen Impaction with Foreign bodies like plastics, nylon ropes, metallic objects etc and restoring the normal ruminal function to save the animal. SUMMARY OF RUMENOTOMY

CONCLUSION

The work of the Blue Cross has increased tremendously in the last few years. Thousands of animals injured in rail or road accidents or young puppies and kittens separated from their mothers are rescued by us each year. Thousands of ABC/AR operations on dogs and several hundred on cats are carried out. Hundreds of injured and sick animals 54th Annual Report - Blue of Cross India

are in our shelters at any time. All our services with the exception of requesting the cost of vaccines from pets with guardians are totally free of charge. In spite of so much of our work being done by volunteers, the running of so massive an operation needs a lot of money. It is, therefore, with many thanks that we acknowledge the generous help of our supporters without whose help the above work would not have been possible
