As shown by a below-described scheme, benzotris(norbornadiene) (a below formula (87)) is firstly synthe- sized from norbornadiene (a below formula (86)). Then, the compound is subjected to a metathesis reaction so as to synthesize hexahydrosumanene (a below formula (88)), and it is dehydrogenized so as to obtain Sumanene (a below formula (84)). Thereby, Sumanene can be mass-synthesized under a moderate condition. In addition, a compound with a structure where a benzyl position of Sumanene is substituted by a N atom or an O atom can be obtained similarly, and various derivatives also can be obtained by further chemical modification of the compound. Sumanene and its derivative are suitable for electronic materials, synthesis raw materials for various kinds of fullerenes and heterofullerenes, and the like. Background Art [0002] A group of carbon homologues that include various kinds of fullerenes such as C60 (a below formula (82)) 10 and C70, and carbon nanotubes (hereinafter, they may be generically called "fullerenes") are of interest as next-gen- eration materials because of their specific properties. Fullerenes with various structures are known besides C60 and C70, which respectively have inherent properties. World-wide research has been keenly conducted to add various functions further to fullerenes by chemical modification. 15 20 25 [0003] However, at present, since a method for manufacturing fullerenes is limited to a so-called arc discharge meth- od and the like, C60 and C70 can be obtained relatively easily, but other fullerenes can be produced only in small amounts, and are very difficult to obtain. Therefore, such poor kind variations of starting raw materials causes a difficulty 30 in manufacturing high-functional materials with various structures by modifying fullerenes chemically. [0004] In the light of the above-described problem, attempts for chemical syntheses of fullerenes are made keenly all over the world, but this research has just started, and no one has accomplished it yet. However, molecular structures of products can be controlled freely by a method of organic synthetic chemistry, unlike by the arc discharge method, and therefore, if the research proceeds, fullerenes, which are conventionally difficult to obtain, are expected to be 35 obtained freely. Moreover, it is considered that, if not only the existing fullerenes but also new fullerenes and their derivatives can be synthesized, the possibilities of designing new materials will be highly enhanced. For example, heterofullerenes that are obtained by substituting hetero atoms for some of carbon atoms of fullerenes are focused on in a theoretical research (see, for example, "M. Riad Manaa, David W. Sprehn, and Heather A. Ichord, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2002, 124, p.13990-13991."). However, since such heterofullerenes, except only a few kinds of compounds such 40 as C59N (see "Science, 1995, 269, p.1554."), have not manufactured yet, establishment of the methods for their syn- thesis in organic chemistry are sought. [0005] At present, research for synthesizing a compound including a non-planar conjugated carbon skeleton that is a partial structure of C60 has proceeded. However, so far, it has been reported only that a compound called Corannulene (a below formula (83)) and its derivative were synthesized in 1966, and the synthesis has been conducted still at a 45 laboratory level. 50 55 3 EP 1 604 949 A2 5 10 15 [0006] Corannulene is a compound that is synthesized as the first compound including the partial structure of C60 in the world, thus having an academic significance. In addition, a route for manufacturing a relatively large amount of Corannulene under moderate conditions in a flask has been reported as well (Andrzej Sygula and Peter W. Rabideau, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2000, 122, p.6323-6324.). However, there would be a problem if Corannulene is used as a synthesis raw material or the like for fullerenes. The reason for this is because, since all of the carbon atoms in the skeleton of 20 Corannulene are taken into a benzene nucleus, reactivity thereof is not very high. Therefore, derivatives of Corannulene with only limited structures are synthesized at present, and thus it is expected to be difficult to lead these derivatives further to the compounds such as C60. Disclosure of Invention 25 [0007] Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a compound that can be used as a synthesis raw material or the like for fullerenes and heterofullerenes, and a method for manufacturing the same. [0008] In order to solve the above-mentioned object, the present invention provides a compound represented by a below-described general formula (1), a tautomer of the compound, a stereoisomer of the compound, or a salt of any 30 of the compound, the tautomer and the stereoisomer. 35 40 45 50 [0009] Here, in the formula, A1 to A6 are the same or different, and each of the A1 to A6 is a hydrogen atom, a straight or branched alkyl group or an aromatic hydrocarbon group, in a case where a hydrogen atom at a benzyl position exists on any of the A1 to A6, the hydrogen atom may be substituted by a substituent. [0010] The substituents on the A1 to A6 are the same or different, and each of the substituents is a halogen, a low molecular-weight or a polymer chain that is straight or branched (a principal chain (main chain) and a side chain of the 55 low molecular-weight or the polymer chain may or may not include a hetero atom, may or may not include an unsaturated bond, and may or may not include a cyclic structure), a carbocyclic ring or a heterocyclic ring (the ring may be a monocyclic ring or a condensed ring, may be saturated or unsaturated, and may or may not include a substituent), an electron-releasing group or an electron-withdrawing group. Alternatively, the substituents bonded to the same Ar (r is 4 EP 1 604 949 A2 any one of integers from 1 to 6) may be bonded to each other via a covalent bond so as to form a carbocyclic ring or a heterocyclic ring with the Ar to which the substituents are bonded (the ring may be a monocyclic ring or a condensed ring, may be saturated or unsaturated, and may or may not include a substituent). [0011] X1 to X3 are the same or different, and each of the X1 to X3 may be a methylene group (a below formula (2)), 5 a vinylidene group (a below formula (3)), a carbonyl group (a below formula (4)), a thiocarbonyl group (a below formula (5)), an iminomethylene group (a below formula (6)), an imino group (a below formula (7)) or an oxygen atom (a below formula (8)). In a case where an hydrogen atom exists on any of the X1 to X3, the hydrogen atom may be substituted by a substituent. 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 [0012] The substituents on the X1 to X3 are the same or different. Each of the substituents is a halogen, a low molecular-weight or a polymer chain that is straight or branched (a principal chain and a side chain of the low molecular- 45 weight or the polymer chain may or may not include a hetero atom, may or may not include an unsaturated bond, and may or may not include a cyclic structure), a carbocyclic ring or a heterocyclic ring (the ring may be a monocyclic ring or a condensed ring, may be saturated or unsaturated, and may or may not include a substituent). IRAN ABSTRACT: Herein, we studied interactions between the Li neutral atom and Li+ ion and three types of nanoparticles including sumanene (Sum), corannulene (Cor), and nanosheet to obtain the cell voltage (V) for Li−ion batteries (LIBs). Total energies, geometry optimizations, Frontier Molecular Orbital (FMO), and Density of States (DOS) analyses have been obtained using M06−2X level of theory and 6−31+G (d,p) basis set. DFT calculations clarified that the changes of energy + adsorption between Li ion and nanoparticles, Ead, are in the order: Sheet > Sum−I > Cor > Cor−I > Sum. However, the Vcell for Sum is the highest. The changes in Vcell of Li−ion batteries (LIBs) are in the order: Sum > Sheet > Sum−i > Cor > Cor−i. This study theoretically indicates the possibility of Li as the anode in the battery field. KEYWORDS: DFT study; Sumanene; Corannulene; Nanosheet; Li−ion Batteries. • Enantioselective Synthesis of a Chiral Nitrogen-Doped Buckybowl
ARTICLE Received 9 Mar 2012 | Accepted 9 May 2012 | Published 12 Jun 2012 DOI: 10.1038/ncomms1896 Enantioselective synthesis of a chiral nitrogen- doped buckybowl Qitao Tan1, Shuhei Higashibayashi1,2, Sangita Karanjit2 & Hidehiro Sakurai1,2 Bowl-shaped aromatic compounds, namely buckybowls constitute a family of curved polycyclic aromatic carbons along with fullerenes and carbon nanotubes. Doping of heteroatoms to the carbon frameworks of such aromatic compounds drastically modulates their physical and chemical properties. In contrast to nitrogen-doped azafullerenes or carbon nanotubes, synthesis of azabuckybowls, nitrogen-doped buckybowls, remains an unsolved challenging task. Here we report the first enantioselective synthesis of a chiral azabuckybowl, triazasumanene. X-ray crystallographic analysis confirmed that the doping of nitrogen induces a more curved and deeper bowl structure than in all-carbon buckybowls. As a result of the deeper bowl structure, the activation energy for the bowl inversion (thermal flipping of the bowl structure) reaches an extraordinarily high value (42.2 kcal per mol). As the bowl inversion corresponds to the racemization process for chiral buckybowls, this high bowl inversion energy leads to very stable chirality of triazasumanene. 1 Research Center for Molecular Scale Nanoscience, Institute for Molecular Science, Myodaiji, Okazaki 444-8787, Japan. 2 School of Physical Sciences, the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, Myodaiji, Okazaki 444-8787, Japan. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any other university. Signature: Date: i Abstract The concept of aromaticity and its implications are fundamentally important to a wide range of applied sciences involving organic molecules. Aromaticity arises from the delocalisation of electrons through a cyclic conjugated system known as a conjugated circuit. Monocyclic aromatic compounds possess a single conjugated circuit while polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may have numerous potential conjugated circuits. The aromaticity of PAHs is complicated by the presence of multiple conjugated circuits which may have varying contribution to the overall properties depending on several factors such as geometry and topology. Isocoronene 105 is one example of a PAH classified as a non-benzenoid corannulene. Isocoronene is unique among corannulenes since the conjugated circuits are restricted to the peripheral and central rings only. Isocoronene has been used as a model compound for computational studies into aromaticity and may provide the first example of a superaromatic molecule. The synthesis of novel aromatic structures such as isocoronene is essential in providing unambiguous empirical data which can be used to verify and develop computational methods. In addition, the development of new synthetic methodologies towards PAHs is important in the field of organic electronics.

Riegera and K. Mu¨ llena* Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are popular research subjects due to their high stability, their rigid planar structure, and their characteristic optical spectra. The recent discovery of graphene, which can be regarded as giant PAH, has further stimulated the interest in this area. For this reason, the relationship between the geometric and electronic structure and the optical spectra of PAHs are reviewed, pointing out the versatile properties of this class of molecules. Extremely stable fully-benzenoid PAHs with high optical gaps are encountered on the one side and the very reactive acenes with low optical gaps on the other side. A huge range of molecular sizes is covered from the simplest case benzene with its six carbon atoms up to disks containing as much as 96 carbon atoms. Furthermore, the impact of non-planarity is discussed as model cases for the highly important fullerenes and carbon nanotubes. The detailed analysis of the electronic structure of PAHs is very important with regard to their application as fluorescent dyes or organic semiconductors. The presented research results shall encourage developments of new PAH structures to exploit novel materials properties. Copyright ß 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Chiral HPLC analysis/resolution of the derivatives were also achieved. Based on theoretical calculations, the columnar crystal packing structure of sumanene and trimethylsumanene was interpreted as due to attractive electrostaticorCH³ interaction. According to the experimental and theoretical studies, the bowl depth and inversion energy were found to increase on methylation for sumanene in contrast to corannulene. Dissimilarities of the effect of methylation on the bowl structure and inversion energy of sumanene and corannulene were ascribed to differences in steric repulsion. A double-well potential model was fitted to the bowl structureinversion energy correlation of substituted sumanenes, with a small deviation.

The overall conclusion was that several of the yet hypothetical molecular nanostructures herein described are serious candidates to the status of real molecules. Keywords: ab initio; HOMA; NICS; nanotube junction; circulene; fullerene; polybenzene; periodic network; vibrational spectra 1. Introduction Among the carbon allotropes discovered in the nano-era, fullerenes (zero-dimensional), nanotubes (one dimensional), graphene (two dimensional), spongy carbon and hyper-diamonds (three dimensional) are the most challenging [1–3].
