2 TEDDY BEAR TIMES 22 a beary big welcome By the time you are reading this issue of TBT, most of us will be in a festive mood - hopefully it’s a good one! I don’t like the fact that as soon as the children go back to school in Septem- ber, the shops start getting the Christ- mas displays ready…it’s far too early. However, come mid-November, I am keen to have a wander past the shelves and shop windows, making lists and gathering gift ideas. Of course there is always a bear or two on there! If you are stuck for ideas for your loved ones, we have some seasonal beary suggestions for you, plus a gallery of bears dressed in all their festive fi nery. The Bear Doctors are looking forward to down- 8 ing tools until the new year but not before they have shared their latest repair stories. Test your own knowledge of old bears with our quiz or take a trip down memory lane with SuperTed. There is still plenty of time to make our Christ- mas Bear pattern, supplied by Barbara Ewing, and the knitters among you might like to whizz up a few mini Santa sacks for your bears or beary friends. If the festive season leaves you cold, then there is so much more inside this issue - we hope you enjoy it. 44 Well that just leaves me space to wish you all a happy holiday season and lots of beary good things for the coming year! Till next issue 16 Jill & the team

With passion for detail…

My bears are born with love and are made of high quality mohair in all variations. They are fi lled with sheep wool or granules, sometimes combined. Their irresistible faces retain their character thanks to carefully embroidered noses and beautiful glass eyes. The bears are fi ve-fold structured, which means that the arms, legs and head are movable. The size of the bears varies between 20 to 60 cm. On request, of course, I can make smaller or larger sizes. Each of my bears is a one-of-a-kind and has a trademark with a guarantee of authenticity, provided with my artist name.

HE was sitting with two other bears, a big white one, and a small white one. The two were playing with a beautiful bright red kind of car. At home we call it Ferrari red, just like our toy car. HE was brown, a bit smaller than the white one. He had a patch on his right eye, so big one could not see the eye. The other eye had white in it. He had a red collar with a cow bell, I have seen such bells on the cows in the Pyrene- an mountains. His paws underneath were the most beautiful paws I had ever seen, and not both the same: one had bright red dots, and the other a red star. How lucky he was to have such paws; I was a bit jealous. But the most amazing thing was the other thing he had around his neck, next to the cow bell. A big piece of paper. Written on it was: „Name: Truffl e Born: 5 july 2015” Well, my poor Truffl e fell into a deep existentialist crisis, having thought so far that he was unique. I needed much energy, love and patience to convince him that it is not his name that makes him unique but who he is! Another wonderful bear we saw in there was sitting on an old typewriter next to a cute pink mouse. I refl ex- ively took a photograph, and when I saw it back home, I thought it was a wonderful motif and really enjoyed painting him. On the next day of our Tour, we went toward the west. In a pretty little village called Reeth, we saw two bears, such as we had never seen before. Truffl e and me were quite ‘fl ummoxed’. Here is what Truffl e had to say: “… there we found two very funny bears. One red and one yel- low. And even more so as I spotted Wensley, the fi rst Teddy I adopted during my Tour of Yorkshire. We met many extraordinary bears during our Tour, and I could go on and on and on. But Teddy Bear Times surely needs the room for all the other wonderful Teddy Bear artists. So, I will ever and I loved them. These bears were cakes? “But… does it mean that people are eating them?” “Yes, I guess it is what it means. But perhaps they don’t. Bears were included in these books and appeared in all their majesty and glory within their home environment. A far cry from the image of the slow, lumbering and early duped version of the bear which had been portrayed in fables in Western Europe since the Middle Ages. Also a far cry from the portrayal of the bear in Longfellow’s popular tale ‘Hiawatha’, in which the most sacred of animals is seen entirely stripped of its heroic and spiritual meaning. Since the revival of the early 1900s, interest in nature, including bears, has grown and teddy’s popularity has grown along with it. In fact, interest has grown not only in the area of natural sciences but also in rediscovering the spiritual signifi cance of the bear. The history of the bear and hu- mankind together has been rich and primal. The bear has, for millennia, been the master of souls in transi- tion. The eminent psychologist, Carl Jung, asserted that there is a bear with glowing eyes deep within the human unconscious, part of the deep reality of the human self. He is there to help us to see in the dark. The bear sounds a sympathetic and creative note in the human imagina- tion and his power is still resonant in our heart. We never outgrow teddy; he has an ancient inherited wisdom and our journey, after all, is from childhood. Cherish teddy and cherish his wild brothers, who face an uncertain future because of us. As a species we need to regain that attitude and wisdom which returns the bear to his sacred status. We must rediscover the power of the bear and harness it to build a better future for the bears under threat and to guide and protect us in our daily lives.
