I now have a much clearer vision of how my collection should look. I love all of my bears, but have simply run out of room and want to cut back a large percentage, so I can re-grow it with my current knowledge. So it’s time to call the auctioneers in, I can’t think of any safer hands to pass them onto than my teddy friend, Daniel Agnew of Special Auction Services, to send them all to their new homes. I think it would be great fun and I will enjoy seeing my beloved bears finding new owners.” “I first started collecting teddy bears because my daughter-in-law bought me a teddy bear and the Teddy Bear Encyclopaedia for a milestone birthday, which sparked an interest and I started looking at antique bears online. -
Some Key Toy Manufacturers
45936 MOC Must Toys Book6 12/1/05 7:53 am Page 41 Some key toy manufacturers Britain Abbatt Toys Paul and Marjorie Abbatt were pioneers of innovative educational toys in the 1930s. They set up in business in 1932 selling toys to friends and by mail order from their flat in Tavistock Square, London. Demand was such that in 1936 they opened a child friendly shop at 94 Wimpole Street, designed by their friend the architect Ernö Goldfinger. The Abbatts were his main clients at the time and he designed toys and nursery equipment for them. They were concerned with the play needs of children in general, introducing a range of toys for children with physical disabilities devised by Milan Morgenstern. In 1951 they were instrumental in setting up the Children’s Play Activities Trust Ltd. to promote excellence in toy design and manufacture. After Paul Abbatt died in 1971 the business was bought by the Educational Supply Association. William Britain Ltd. Britains Ltd. was founded by William Britain in London in 1840. At first Britains made tin and clockwork toys and from the 1890s they made model soldiers. It also opened an office in Paris, France in 1905. The company made munitions for both world wars. In 1954 Herald miniatures, makers of unbreakable plastic toys, became a subsidiary of Britains. In 1966 Britains ceased to manufacture its metal soldiers. It was purchased by Ertl Co. in 1997. The Chad Valley Co. Ltd. The Chad Valley trademark was first registered in 1897 when the original company of Johnson Brothers added games to its stationery range. -

Collecting Old Teddy Bears Part I: Old English Bears by Jill Byron
Teddy Bears Collecting Old Teddy Bears Part I: Old English Bears by Jill Byron There is something very comforting about a teddy bear. They have always been beloved childhood companions and if you are feeling lonely, miserable, or ill, just cuddling a teddy bear can make you feel better. I have certainly found this to be true and two of my own bears, one old and one modern, have helped me through some of the worst times of my life. Chad Valley, William J. Terry, Chiltern, Merrythought, Deans, Invicta, Omega and Farnell, are just a few of the English companies who made teddy bears in the early part of the last century. 1930s pink and blue Chilterns. Pink 1948 Farnell with a wonderful face. Others include Steevans, Ealontoys, Pedigree, Wendy Boston, Plummer bear bought from ‘Old Time Bears’ Bought from a teddy bear shop in in 2005 for £185. Blue bear bought Llangollen, which sadly no longer Wandless and Co. and Pixie Toys. at a bear fair for £140. exists. £250. Chiltern are among the most popular of the English makers. Their teddies usually have a sweet face and as any collector will tell you, this is very important, as the face is always the thing that makes you want to buy the bear. Chiltern ‘Master Teddy’ was the first bear ever made by this company in 1915. He was worth around £1,500-£1,800 a few years ago but although he is a victim of the times, he is very rare and will have held his value better than many. -

Abstract This thesis is the final assignment for a B.Ed. degree in educational science, with a major in textile studies, from the University of Iceland. The main subject of this thesis are teddy bears and the emotional and psychological connection that forms between individuals and teddy bears and by that prove that the teddy bear is a much bigger and more complex phenomenon than a regular childhood toy. The thesis also runs through the creation of the teddy bear and its remarkable history and how it’s possible not only to use the teddy bear itself but also the psychological bond we form with them in pre- and grade school education. -
