I now have a much clearer vision of how my collection should look. I love all of my bears, but have simply run out of room and want to cut back a large percentage, so I can re-grow it with my current knowledge. So it’s time to call the auctioneers in, I can’t think of any safer hands to pass them onto than my teddy friend, Daniel Agnew of Special Auction Services, to send them all to their new homes. I think it would be great fun and I will enjoy seeing my beloved bears finding new owners.” “I first started collecting teddy bears because my daughter-in-law bought me a teddy bear and the Teddy Bear Encyclopaedia for a milestone birthday, which sparked an interest and I started looking at antique bears online.

  • For Immediate Release the WORLD's OLDEST TEDDY BEAR
For Immediate Release 30 August 2006 Contact: Zoë Schoon 020.7752.3121 [email protected] THE WORLD’S OLDEST TEDDY BEAR MUSEUM TO BE SOLD BY PRIVATE TREATY AT CHRISTIE’S SOUTH KENSINGTON The Teddy Bear Museum, Stratford-upon-Avon South Kensington – Christie’s are pleased to present, by private treaty, the sale of the world’s oldest Teddy Bear Museum, based in Stratford-upon-Avon. The award-winning museum was opened by self- confessed teddy bear enthusiast and well known broadcaster Gyles Brandreth and his wife Michele, on 4th July 1988. Since then, this popular little museum has gone from strength to strength in one of England’s most celebrated towns. Stratford-upon-Avon attracts five million tourists annually and visitors to the Teddy Bear Museum have ranged from royalty to Tony Blair’s bear, Lynton, who recently spent his summer holidays at the Museum. The collection, personally put together by Brandreth, numbers a thousand bears and related items. It is to be sold as a going concern, along with the Tudor building (once the property of King Henry VIII) that has been its home for the last 18 years. “The Museum has come of age and it’s now time for us to find new owners for the museum and its unique collection. Our children are all grown-up and my work commitments mean that I simply don’t have the time to give it the care and attention it deserves. We want to find new owners for the Museum who will love it as much as we do and see it go from strength to strength.” Said Gyles Brandreth Highlights of the collection include several early Steiff bears, the earliest being Growler, a much- sought-after Steiff rod-bear, circa 1904.

Rare world children Black dolls and their history By: Jolie van der Klis Antique black dolls are rare — I actually wanted to write this line last year, to tell the history of the dolls that we may remember from childhood. At the time, I waived it: I didn't want to throw any fuel on any discussion.*) Meanwhile, even much more has happened on the world stage, the brutal murder of George Floyd, one of the many victims of police prejudice. I could of course postpone the article again, but, as I wondered down-hearted: how many years will I postpone it? *) Note: This refers to an awkward debate in The Netherlands, about the altered tradition of the Dutch Santaclaus and his companion, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet Exhibition in Paris It has been two years since Deborah Neff exhibited her unique collection of antique black dolls in Paris. Handmade from fabric and leather, flour sacks and buttons, by unknown Americans with an African background. These dolls were intended as play dolls: they can sometimes be seen in old family photos. Some are already 180 years old. Photo: press release exhibition at La Maison Rouge, Deborah Neff dolls Caricatures Manufacturers who made black dolls hardly existed at the time; if they were made, the dolls were gross caricatures. Like this doll, that has all the features of a tap dancer from the humiliating Minstrel shows. Photo: Detail undated wooden caricature Doll maker Leo Moss An exception to that rule is doll maker Leo Moss. In the early 1900s he made unique portrait dolls, all modeled after an existing child, the name of which has sometimes been preserved.

  • For April 2021 – by Eileen Truby You Are Holding a Dinner Party for 5 Gues
U3a Creative Writing Group – “Writing prompt” for April 2021 – by Eileen Truby You are holding a dinner party for 5 guests plus yourself. The guests will be well known people, not necessarily living, but who have contributed to society in some way. Write about why you chose them and describe briefly conversations they would have had with each other and set the menu for the dinner. The guests I would invite are: Ventriloquist Peter Brough and his ventriloquist’s dummy Archie Andrews Ventriloquist Keith Harris and his puppet Orville the Duck Annette Mills and her string puppet Muffin the Mule Harry Corbett (magician and puppeteer) and his glove puppet Sooty the yellow teddy bear. Charlie Drake - Comedian/singer/slapstick artist Host - Eileen Truby The menu would be plain and simple and preferably something that could be eaten one handed as most of my guests would be using one of their hands to manipulate their puppets. I’d choose: Tomato soup with croutons so the guests wouldn’t have to mess about with breaking and buttering rolls. Homemade fish and chips, preferably served in newspaper (easy to pick up with fork or fingers). Finger bowls will be needed for use before dessert. Jelly and custard for dessert (easy to eat with a spoon). Drinks would be beers, wine, soft drinks and tea/coffee. I’ve chosen these guests as they remind me of the innocence and carefree days of my childhood. My children look at me as if I’ve gone mad when I tell them I used to listen to a radio program that starred a ventriloquist dummy called Archie Andrews.

45936 MOC Must Toys Book6 12/1/05 7:53 am Page 41 Some key toy manufacturers Britain Abbatt Toys Paul and Marjorie Abbatt were pioneers of innovative educational toys in the 1930s. They set up in business in 1932 selling toys to friends and by mail order from their flat in Tavistock Square, London. Demand was such that in 1936 they opened a child friendly shop at 94 Wimpole Street, designed by their friend the architect Ernö Goldfinger. The Abbatts were his main clients at the time and he designed toys and nursery equipment for them. They were concerned with the play needs of children in general, introducing a range of toys for children with physical disabilities devised by Milan Morgenstern. In 1951 they were instrumental in setting up the Children’s Play Activities Trust Ltd. to promote excellence in toy design and manufacture. After Paul Abbatt died in 1971 the business was bought by the Educational Supply Association. William Britain Ltd. Britains Ltd. was founded by William Britain in London in 1840. At first Britains made tin and clockwork toys and from the 1890s they made model soldiers. It also opened an office in Paris, France in 1905. The company made munitions for both world wars. In 1954 Herald miniatures, makers of unbreakable plastic toys, became a subsidiary of Britains. In 1966 Britains ceased to manufacture its metal soldiers. It was purchased by Ertl Co. in 1997. The Chad Valley Co. Ltd. The Chad Valley trademark was first registered in 1897 when the original company of Johnson Brothers added games to its stationery range.
