This is our first edition for 2018, and some changes have taken place in the team putting the magazine together, as Marilyn has stepped down as joint editor, and I am joined by Tryphena Huntingford who is learning the ropes. We get our information, ideas and articles via our team - Susan Osborne and Maggie Norvell, and Claire Cook who keeps the books, as well as our regular and occasional contributors, like Sarah Nutt and Susan Osborne who send us News from the Churches, and Juliette Wedderkopp who fills our Young Buddies pages. We also have some dedicated proof readers, like Laurian Cooper and Jan Middleton, who pick up our errors before publication and who make an invaluable contribution. And we must not forget Zenah Rowe and our volunteer distributors who make sure that your copy arrives in your letterbox each month. So it really is a team effort. And of course our Advertisers without whose support we could not do any of this. We rely on you - our neighbours and readers - to let us have News from the Villages - like new arrivals, weddings and departures: please do drop us a line if you know of any newsworthy happenings. We try to include a bit of something for everyone and we welcome your ideas - perhaps recipes for our Seasonal Treats and garden tips for Green Fingers. Maybe you have a Local Story that will resonate with our readers - if so let us know. I’m always glad to drop around and talk about it, and bring my camera to photograph things, but perhaps you also have some lovely seasonal photos taken in or around the villages that we could feature on the Cover or in the collage. And we always appreciate your feedback. You’ll find our contact details in the Magazine Information at the back of the magazine! This month we are Out & About for a winter walk on the Common with Ian Loudon, and we feature a long-time Local Personality who has taken the bit between the teeth - or at least her horse Tally has - and started eventing at the age of 50 with some success!. We enjoy finding out what’s been happening at Our School - it is always lovely to see happy photos of the children. With Lent starting in February, the Friends of St Peter’s are putting on their second Pancake Day Lunch at the Church on Shrove Tuesday - do come and join them there. We also have the excitement of the new BudVue Cinema arriving at the freshly redecorated Jubilee Hall - it is all there on our What’s On pages. Saranne Cessford, on behalf of the Editorial Team *There’s an important news item on the future management of the Jubilee Hall on pages 4-8. We ask you all to read it and consider the implications. 1 What’s On Mon 19 Feb 7.00- Police Beat Surgeries Jubilee Hall Mon 19 Mar 8.00 pm Mon 12 Feb Parish Council Meetings Jubilee Hall 7.30 pm Mon 12 Mar Friendship Circle Jubilee Hall Fri 9 Feb 11.00 am Shrove Tuesday 12.00 - St Peter’s Church Tues 13 Feb Pancake Lunch 2.00pm Friendship Circle Jubilee Hall Fri 8 Dec 10.45 am Langford Ladies Planning Martlet Wed 21 Feb 7.30pm meeting Milverton Concert Soc. An enthusiastic group of volunteers has refurbished the main hall floor and cleaned the foyer and committee room carpets. Not only that, but the stage has been rebuilt - it is now symmetrical and a little higher. The stage has been re-carpeted by C&C Carpets and a new set of access steps has been built. The main hall has been transformed! Thanks are due to all those who helped but in particular to Philip Gothard and Tim Seddon who gave up many hours of their own time to help me with the stage and the hall floor. A great team effort! Keith Moore 4 THE VILLAGE HALL & THE FUTURE Even if you are not a regular reader of village hall news, please take the time to read the notes below. They are about the future of the hall as a major asset for our community and as such I hope will be of interest to everyone. Thank you. Keith Moore Chairman, LBVH Trustees Position Statement The village hall had its fifth anniversary in September 2017. During this five-year period the hall has followed the business plan constructed for the Big Lottery bid. During the last three years the hall has generated income in excess of expenditure which reflects the success of the hall in terms of level of use. The surpluses have been reinvested in the hall – for example the interior has been completely redecorated during the Christmas period. As the existing plan has expired, the Trustees are formulating a plan for the next five-year cycle and would like to hear the views of the community so that these can be taken into account as we develop the plan. The Trustees feel strongly that changes are required so that more volunteers are involved in running the hall and the wider community has a stronger voice in determining how the hall is managed. It is planned to initiate any changes proposed at the AGM on 10th May 2018, when it is likely that Keith Moore and some of the other current Trustees will not be seeking re-election. Between now and the AGM the Trustees will be seeking your views on how the hall should develop in the next five years and most importantly, seeking volunteers to join us as we embark upon the next exciting phase of the hall’s evolution. A questionnaire will be issued with the next issue of Round About in Brief in March and the Trustees will report back to you when your replies have been collated. We really hope you will be able to support us by replying to the questionnaire so that your hall can be further developed to meet the needs of everyone in the community. LBVH Trustees (More information on the following pages) 5 MORE INFORMATION If you would like to know a little more detail, what follows is a summary of what has been agreed in recent Trustees’ meetings. The full version of these notes forms the blueprint on which the next five year plan will be modelled. Context/Background Information • The 5-year business plan produced for the Lottery application has expired. • We should take this opportunity to focus on how the VH can be even more successful in the next 5 years. • Whilst we cannot plan in detail the VH direction now – this will be the job of the new Chair and Trustees – we do need to set the strategic direction. Vision Considerations • VH to continue to function successfully – i.e. at least breaking even, use at or ideally above current levels • Demographic – endeavour to encourage younger people into the Trustees and working groups and more generally. • Expand definition of “community” – not just the villages of Langford Budville and Runnington as VH not sustainable without wider involvement – we acknowledge that we will not obtain sufficient people to support the VH if we just focus on those within the parish. • Embrace technology – become much more social media savvy which will help attract younger people.
