After the sad memories of the First World War in our last edition, we’re far more cheerful this month with three Village Weddings to celebrate. The wonderful summer (where did it go?) gave us a glut of courgettes and Dairy Delights is happy to tell you what to do with them. We’re still with vegetables in Green Fingers as the time has come to start preparing the garden for Winter. The change of season sees the dying of many of our garden flowers, including lavender, but there is much more to this plant than beauty and scent and we are starting what we hope will be a regular series on wellbeing with The Magic of Lavender. Langford Heathfield appears again in Out and About with Grazing on the Common as we look at the reason we have the lovely Sheltland ponies here every Summer. It’s great to see the Common tidied up again and we hope you find our articles on its various aspects interesting. This month our Village Personality is an artist who lives in Chipley and will be opening up her studio for a long weekend in September. We have several excellent artists in and around our community who will be exhibiting during Somerset Art Weeks which runs for two weeks from the 20 September. These include Susie Kenward who runs the Art Group at the Jubilee Hall which produced the beautiful poppies that marked the start of WW1 in our last edition. We take a trip back into the past as we investigate the waterway that was to be constructed to run through the Parish in the 19th century with Canal Fever. Although there is little left to see, it is fascinating to learn of the grand plans that all went to dust when the railways arrived. I’ve done a bit of pleading in the past as we tried to recruit someone from Runnington to join our editorial team. I’m delighted to say that Sue Osborne has agreed to represent the village; we’re really pleased to have her support. Marilyn Lilley on behalf of the Editorial Team PS: Many thanks to Josh and Juliette Wedderkopp for the delightful photos of their family on the cover and opposite. Please send us yours. 3 What’s On Haddons, 3 Sept 10.25-10.35 Mobile Library Runnington 1 Oct Note: new dates - 29 Oct now every 4 weeks White Post 10.40-10.55am 26 Nov from 3 September Jubilee Hall 11.00-11.20am Runnington Pet Service 7 Sept 10.30am Church Parish Council Jubilee Hall 8 Sept 7.30pm Sale of Paintings Willow Acre Barn 12-15 Sept see page 3 Caroline Mc D Chipley St Peter’s Churchyard tidy-up 13 Sept 10.00am Church Police surgery Jubilee Hall 15 Sept 7.00pm Runnington Churchyard Bash 19 Sept 10.00am Church Somerset Art All over the 20 Sept - 5 Oct See brochure Weeks place Barn Dance Jubilee Hall 20 Sept 7.00pm St Peter’s Harvest Festival 21 Sept 10.30am Church Runnington Harvest Festival 28 Sept 9.15am Church 27 Sept Decorating Apple Pressing Day Jubilee Hall 18 Oct Time tbc Pacific Curls Fusion Jubilee hall 29 Oct Time tbc Music/Take Art Songs that won the St Peters Church 7 Nov 7.00 pm War Jubilee Hall AGM Jubilee Hall 13 Nov 7.00pm Table Top Sale Jubilee Hall 15 Nov 10.00am-1.00pm 4 The Night Sky September is the month the astronomy "season" begins. The nights are getting darker earlier and autumn starts on 22nd September at the Equinox. This month all of the planets are visible, though Mercury will be a challenge. Mercury - visible low down in the west at sunset. Although close to the horizon it should be bright enough to see. Venus - a "morning star" this month in the constellation of Leo. Very bright and 15 degrees to the lower left of Jupiter. Mars - in Libra at the start of the month, moving into Scorpius from the 13th. On the first of the month Mars lies 5 degrees to the left of Saturn. Both planets are magnitude 0.6, but Mars usually looks brighter due to its red hue. Jupiter - in Cancer the Crab, rises at about 4am in the east. With Venus close by the two planets will make an attractive naked-eye view. Saturn - an evening object in Libra. The rings still look good through a telescope. Compare the brightness with Mars. Uranus - is in Pisces the Fish at magnitude 5.7 is an easy binocular object if you know where to look. Neptune - an evening object in Aquarius shining at magnitude 7.8. A telescope will reveal its tiny disk. Kieron McGrath 5 Village Weddings One bride, one groom, two weddings Kathryn Harris was born in Musgrove Park Hospital and came to the village when she was ten days old. She attended Langford Budville School and lived here until 2008. Kathryn was married to Pankajrai Karadia on 2 August in St. Peter’s Church. Lightening flashed and thunder rolled as they entered the church but the sun shone brightly as they left. Their reception was held at the Cleve Hotel in Wellington and was themed around ‘Castle’, the Durham University College where they met in 2001. On 10th August they were married again in a Hindu wedding ceremony in Wolverhampton, not far from where they now live. Their families and friends attended both ceremonies. A traditional village celebration Emma Salmon and Allan Adams were married at St Peter’s Church on 9 August 2014. Emma had lived in The Old Post Office for 10 years and said “having grown up opposite the church it's where I have always wanted to be married and the fact my Dad is buried there is also very special to me as it was a way of him being there on the day”. Their reception was held in the Jubilee Hall and they embraced the village hall theme with lots of bunting, hay bales and outdoor games. Instead of a traditional cake they had three different ones so it looked like a best in show cake stand. 68 guests attended the wedding and reception and nearly 100 for the hog roast and party in the evening. A buggy made for two As one sister Sophia was married at St Peter’s four years ago and another, Anna, will be wed there next April, Fiona Lloyd decided to break with family tradition and took her vows with Chris Boyle at Nynehead Church, on 9 August 2014. Fiona was given away by her father, Richard Lloyd, who was resplendent in his High Sheriff of Somerset court dress. Fiona and Chris left the Church in a golf buggy and later celebrated with 140 guests in a marquee set up in the garden at Langford Court. They continued the celebrations into the following day by having a hog roast lunch for their large extended family before setting off for a honeymoon in Santorini.
