Hamerla © Copyright by CHRISTOPHER R. DAVIS 2014 All Rights Reserved. Acknowledgements In many ways, this dissertation represents the culmination of a lifelong passion for both sports and history. One of my most vivid early childhood memories comes from the fall of 1972 when, as a five year-old, I was reading the sports section of one of the Dallas newspapers at my grandparents’ breakfast table. I am not sure how much I comprehended, but one fact leaped clearly from the page—Nebraska had defeated Army by the seemingly incredible score of 77-7. Wild thoughts raced through my young mind. How could one team score so many points? How could they so thoroughly dominate an opponent? Just how bad was this Army outfit? How many touchdowns did it take to score seventy-seven points? I did not realize it at the time, but that was the day when I first understood concretely the concepts of multiplication and division. Nebraska scored eleven touchdowns I calculated (probably with some help from my grandfather) and my love of football and the sports page only grew from there.

    Gopher Football 2008 Coaching Staff [ 105 ] Minnesota Football 2008 Gopher Football 2008 Coaching Staff Tim head coach • seBconrd seeawson ster n just one year as the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, Tim Brewster has combined his unique brand of positive energy with a well-earned reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters to rejuvenate the hopes of Go - I pher Nation. Brewster, who is in his second year at the helm of the program after being named Minnesota’s 26th head football coach on Jan. 17, 2007, has never been afraid to work hard or think big. That was proven out this past February, when Brewster and his staff signed a consensus top-25 recruiting class that some experts even rated among the nation’s top 15. The significance of this accomplishment would be difficult to overstate at one the nation’s traditional recruiting powers let alone at Minnesota, where the average Rivals ranking for the Gophers’ previous six recruiting classes was 54th. The renewed emphasis on recruiting may be the most visible phase of Brewster’s plan to help Minnesota football make history again, but it’s just one building block of a blueprint he developed while helping Mack Brown turn North Carolina from ACC doormat into a national power and rebuild Texas into one of the country’s elite programs. Brewster came to Minnesota after spending the previous five years as an assistant coach in the National Football League, including the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the tight ends coach of the Denver Broncos.

    HISTORY FIGHTING ILLINI HISTORY ILLINOIS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS 1914 Possibly the most dominant team in Illinois football history was the 1914 squad. The squad was only coach Robert Zuppke’s second at Illinois and would be the first of four national championship teams he would lead in his 29 years at Illinois. The Fighting Illini defense shut out four of its seven opponents, yielding only 22 points the entire 1914 season, and the averaged up an incredible 32 points per game, in cluding a 51-0 shellacking of Indiana on Oct. 10. This team was so good that no one scored a point against them until Oct. 31, the fifth game of the seven-game season. The closest game of the year, two weeks later, wasn’t very close at all, a 21-7 home decision over Chicago. Leading the way for Zuppke’s troops was right halfback Bart Macomber. He led the team in scoring. Left guard Ralph Chapman was named to Walter Camp’s first-team All-America squad, while left halfback Harold Pogue, the team’s second-leading scorer, was named to Camp’s second team. 1919 The 1919 team was the only one of Zuppke’s national cham pi on ship squads to lose a game. Wisconsin managed to de feat the Fighting Illini in Urbana in the third game of the season, 14-10, to tem porarily knock Illinois out of the conference lead. However, Zuppke’s men came back from the Wisconsin defeat with three consecutive wins to set up a showdown with the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium on Nov.
