It was here that Brahma is said to have performed the ASW AMEDHA or horse sacrifice in token of his universal supremaey, although the honour is claimed by other places, and here the deity commemorated the recovery of the four VEDAS from Sankhasur. The District Census Hand book is in three parts. This is the second part of the series which was originally published in Hindi. This English Edition is brought out for the lise of foreign scholars and other non Hindi speaking persons. 2. We are deeply indobted to ~he State Government for their ever willing and prompt help accorded to us at all levels. The District Census Hand-books are published by us on their behalf. I wis~ to express my gratitude to Shri M. Lal, the then Chief Secretary to U.P. Government, for alJ the guidance and facilities afforded to us in the conduct of Census in this State. I am also grateful to the Secretary, G.AD. for the fa,cilities given by him in sorting out various administrative matters relating to the pUl>lication of these Hand-books. I am extremely thankful to the District Officers for their whole hearted co-operation in furnishing the desired information and the District Census Officers for their hard work and sustained efforts in collecti ng the same. 3. In the Census Office, everyone has made valuable contribution towards the stupen dous task of compilation and collation of statistics and preparation of notes. I am grateful to Shri D.P. Saxena, ex-Deputy Director (Technical) and Shri Sarabjit Singh, Deputy Director (Technical) who helped in bringing out this Handbook. Sinha June 4, 1976. Director INTRODUCTORY NOTE At every Census an endeavour is made to provide data to the users as quickly as possible after tpe Census count. With this end in view the District Census Hand-books at the 1971 Census were divided into three convenient parts so that atIeast parts A and B which contain the essential data pertaining to villages and towns may be released quickly. The State Government also accorded their approval to their publication accordingly in the following three parts:- Part A-Village and Town Directory. Part B-Village and Townwise Primary Cellsus Abstracts. Part C-Analytical Report, Administrative Statistics and District Census Tables. 2. Part A of the Handbook contains village and town Directory for each village and Town of the Tahsils. The village Directory contains information about total area of each village in acres, amenities available in the village, the stapl~ food of the people and the pattern denoting the use of land. There is also information about the nearest town and its distance from the Village. The Town Directory presents data on each town whh the aid of seven statements, giving the status of the town, the decadal variation in population, its functional category, physical and location aspects.
