FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 6, 2014 Contact: Kati Mitchell 617-495-2668 [email protected] American Repertory Theater Announces the Cast and Creative Team for the World Premiere Musical WITNESS UGANDA by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews Directed by Diane Paulus Loeb Drama Center February 4 — March 16, 2014 Cambridge, MA — The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University announced today the cast and creative team for the world premiere production of Witness Uganda, created by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews, directed by A.R.T. Artistic Director Diane Paulus, with choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie. The production begins performances at the Loeb Drama Center at 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge on February 4, and will run through March 16. It is available for press viewing from Wednesday, February 12, at 7:30pm. Opening night invitations will be sent out in mid- January. When Griffin, a young man from New York City volunteers for a project in Uganda, he finds himself on a journey that will change his life forever. Inspired by a true story, this rousing new musical exposes the challenges confronted by American aid workers around the world and explores the question: “Is changing the world possible?” Witness Uganda is the recipient of the 2012 Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theater, ASCAP’s Dean Kay Award, ASCAP’s Harold Adamson Award, and a grant from Conde Nast c/o Summit Series. It was workshopped at Disney/ASCAP (hosted by composer Stephen Schwartz) and at the Vineyard Arts Project/Art Farm. It has been performed in concert around the world and at events including Summit Series in Lake Tahoe, The Lido Investment Symposium in Beverly Hills, The Rattlestick Theatre New Play Festival in New York City, and Patrick’s Orphanage in Ndejje, Uganda. -

AUGUST 2014 WELCOME It’s an intergenerational summer here at The Old Globe. Across the plaza in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, we are producing one of Shakespeare’s first plays, if not his very first: The Two Gentlemen of Verona, a piece about young men, adolescent love, and the dawning of adulthood. Here in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, on the stage of the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we explore a different phase of life, as the four characters in Ronald Harwood’s Quartet come to terms with life, love, and friendship after retirement. DOUG GATES Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. To explore those rich themes in Quartet, we reap the great benefit of four performers with decades of experience to their credit. Robert Foxworth, of course, is a beloved Associate Artist of The Old Globe, last seen here in Other Desert Cities. He is joined by the acclaimed Elizabeth Franz, at long last making her Globe debut, as is seasoned Shakespearean Roger Forbes. The final member of the play’s quartet, Jill Tanner, returns to the Globe after a 30-year absence. And who better to lead such a team of actors than our own Richard Seer? Rick’s deft hand at comedy, his skill at staging in the round, and his ability to bring out the heart of a piece are all on ample display here. This one is more biographical in nature, with more intimate and personal situations from their childhood to the present day. Set in a museum, it brings together man’s evolution and the intersection of people’s lives into the Now. Here. This. Everything that leads to living in the “now,” being “here” and having “this.” Appreciate it all, because it comes around only once and goes oh-so-quickly. Definitely not frivolous, this is thoughtful entertainment that doles out equal doses of heartfelt humor, humanity, and hindsight. Everything that happened in the past has a way of resurfacing and affecting the present and even the future. The foursome have taken incidents from their past, whether they were good, bad, harmful or pleasurable, and brought them to focus for themselves as well as for the audience. For surely all of us have experienced the same feelings, whether in our adolescence, teens, or adulthood. It is a way to see the similarities in ourselves, have a chuckle at our foibles, and hopefully have grown from the past. -

June 2013 Welcome To
June 2013 Welcome to The 2013 Summer Shakespeare Festival marks Adrian Noble’s fourth and final year as Festival Artistic Director. We want to take this opportunity to thank not only Adrian (see Barry’s note on page 23) and his fellow director this season, Ian Talbot, but also the truly excellent repertory company Adrian has built at the Globe over the past four years. These actors make a unique commitment to the Globe; from first rehearsal to closing night, they spend over DOUG GATES five months with us. The process of rehearsing Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. three plays simultaneously and then performing a different one every night requires mental focus, transformative skill and the kind of trust that turns a cast into a company. They accomplish this feat with the support of some of the best stage managers and crew in the business, and we salute them as well. This also seems the perfect moment to reaffirm Shakespeare’s central place, not just in our history, but also in the future of The Old Globe. Next season, with Barry’s production of The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s work will return indoors at the Globe for the first time in more than a decade. In the seasons ahead, we look forward to exploring Shakespeare on all three of the Globe’s stages, alongside the world classics, new American writing and musicals that make up the broad range of our programming. We are also committed to building new platforms, finding new ways to bring Shakespeare and our other work out into the San Diego community, making the finest plays ever written accessible to everyone in America’s finest city.
