The participants in this discourse have lodged fundamental (as well as controversial) charges. Most frequently, these critics argue that the enormous cadre of political activists, progressive lawyers and legal theorists engaged in the particulars of challenging social inequality lack even a basic understanding of how the var- ious forms of subordination operate in society because they fail (or refuse) to realize that systems of oppression do not stand in isolation.! Harris, Race and 1999] IGNORING SEXUALIZATION OFRACE 3 dancy of "gay and lesbian" politics in the 1970s,5 activists and scholars within these social movements began to con- test the very language used to define and describe oppres- sion and the multiple identity categories around which so- cial power and disempowerment are distributed. Driven by personal experience6 and the demonstrated failure of "tradi- tional" policies and theories,7 "outsiders" within progressive political movements mounted substantial "internal cri- tiques" of what they perceived as the essentialist and con- stricted nature of these movements. Women of color and supportive white feminists, for example, argued that femi- nism and anti-racism obscured or ignored issues relevant to women of color who face both racist and patriarchal oppres- sion and that these political discourses, consequently, reflected the political and social positions of white women and men of color.9 Likewise, lesbian theorists and activists Essentialism in Feminist Theory, 42 STAN. Durham: Duke University Press. $79.95 hc. $22.95 sc. ix + 219 pp. Andrew Sargent West Chester University Early in his book The Heart of Whiteness: Normal Sexuality and Race in America, 1880-1940, Julian B. Carter poses the kind of methodologically self- conscious question that has appeared in nearly every work of “whiteness studies” in recent years:“Why do we need another representation of white- ness in conversation with itself?” (44). Carter’s question echoes the anguished soul-searching that whiteness studies scholars have engaged in ever since the field’s 1990s heyday, in which the valid critical project of “making whiteness visible” is nonetheless seen to risk reinforcing the white privilege that the field seeks to challenge. If The Heart ofWhiteness does not completely avoid such methodological tripwires—more on these in a moment—it is certainly not held back by them. On the contrary, this complex, richly textured book reaffirms the ongoing value of carefully researched, theoretically informed historical scholarship on American whiteness. In particular, it offers a powerful exam- ple of the productive new directions taken by scholars participating in what might be called the sexual turn in whiteness studies, or, perhaps more accu- rately, the racial turn in queer theory.As a queer theorist and historian of sex- uality, Carter makes use of queer theory’s challenge to heteronormativity in order to “elucidate normative meanings of whiteness” (158). In the process, he makes a significant contribution to the intertwined history of race and sexuality in America.

    Women-Loving Women: Queering Black Urban Space during the Harlem Renaissance Samantha Tenorio WS 197: Senior Seminar Dr. Lilith Mahmud 7 June 2010 Tenorio 1 Abstract:1 The experience of black “women-loving-women” during the Harlem Renaissance is directly influenced by what Kimberlé Crenshaw terms intersectional identity, or their positioning in the social hierarchies of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation that are simultaneously intertwined. Considering contemporary terms like lesbian and bisexual, it is difficult to define the sexual identity of many famous black women of the early 20th century, such as Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Bessie Jackson to name a few. However, their work both on and off the stage contributes to the construction of identities during the Harlem Renaissance that transgress both racial and sexual conventions. Although these social identities emerged from a long history of slavery and sexual oppression, they nonetheless produced a seemingly free space for the expression of lesbian sensibilities in the black community during the Harlem Renaissance. At a time of racial segregation in America, but also of ideologies of uplift within the black community, social spaces existed in Harlem where sexual “deviance” and race-mixing could be articulated and seen explicitly. Using song lyrics, literature, and scholarly work on social and cultural spaces of the time period between 1919 and 1939, this paper analyzes how certain forms and sites of cultural production, specifically the blues, the cabaret, and literature helped to construct these transgressive identities. The most damaging aspect of this experience is women’s internalization of this perspective into their own sense of self, which has been shown to predict body image issues, eating disturbances, depression, sexual dysfunction, reduced psychological flow, and substance abuse. More recently, there have been efforts to examine how multiple layers of oppression may impact the experiences of sexual objectification and its psychological consequences. This study tested an extension of objectification theory on a sample of 618 Asian American women with the inclusion of race-related experiences, Asian American cultural values, and their relationships with the self- objectification process and depression. Findings indicate that the more participants endorsed Asian American cultural values, the more they engaged in a self-objectification process that involved internalizing mainstream ideals of beauty, monitoring their body appearance, and feeling shame and less satisfaction with race-related features and their bodies in general, which then predicted depression.

De La Garza Fall 2017 GUCCI: FLATTENING WOMEN 2 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to employ feminist ideological framework and Creative Analytic Practice in evaluating the inferior positionality that women are subjected to through Gucci’s 2003 and 2010 advertising campaigns. My paper enters intellectual discourse surrounding fashion photography and contributes toward the discussion by explicating ways women are flattened physically, visually, and metaphorically. Previous analyses have touched on these topics, but there has been lack of precision and gravity in regard to implications. Furthermore, no research has been presented in regard to Gucci’s perpetuation of such ideals. Hegemonic masculinity’s prevalence is evident, as it pervades every aspect of culture. Though women’s fashion photography targets a primarily female audience, patriarchal heteronormativity implicitly and explicitly undermines women’s autonomy. The “male gaze,” which is evident in all forms of media, is particularly pervasive in women’s fashion photography. Conclusions convey that Gucci’s portrayal of women gives way to the illusion that the female half of the population is of little worth, to be subordinated by the dominant male population. The message being sent is that women, through physical, visual, and metaphorical means, are solely an image. They have been flattened physically, visually, and metaphorically at the command of oppression’s chief watchdog, otherwise known as fashion photography.
