HALTERES, Volume 4, 1-11, 2013 ISSN 0973-1555 © SHBBIR R KHAN AND NEELKAMAL RASTOGI Recolonisation patterns of orthopteran species in successional stages of revegetated coal mine sites Shbbir R Khan and Neelkamal Rastogi * Insect Behavioural Ecology Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Centre of Advanced Study, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi – 221 005, U.P., India (*e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract The diversity and abundance of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera was studied in coal mine spoils of different ages (0- 10 year old) located in Singrauli and the adjoining border area between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in India. The abundance of the 21 orthopteran species (belonging to 16 genera) showed significant variations in 0-8 year old mine sites relative to the 10 year old reference site. Orthopteran alpha diversity increased sharply in the 2 year old site. The gradual increase in alpha diversity in the 4-10 year old sites did not demonstrate any significant differences. However, abundance and number of grasshopper species showed a clear linear increase with increase with mine site rehabilitation. Overlap in orthopteran rank abundance curves obtained for 4-10 year old sites is probably due to differences in the occurrence, abundance and diversity patterns of grasshopper and cricket species with increase in mine site rehabilitation age. Our results demonstrate that grasshopper species assemblages are highly sensitive to variations in the level of anthropogenically-caused disturbance, due to mining activities. Thus, the abundance patterns of grasshoppers, including those of habitat specialists, may be of significance in evaluation of the restoration progress in degraded ecosystems, such as mine sites. -

ABSTRACT BUTLER, ERIC MICHAEL. Habitat Selection and Anti-Predator Responses of Acridid Grasshoppers. (Under the direction of Marianne Niedzlek-Feaver and Harold Heatwole.) Most prey species use a variety of defenses to prevent their capture by predators. Habitat can have both direct effects on the effectiveness of these defenses by providing refuges, the backgrounds against which prey species are camouflaged, and, indirectly, by altering exposure to the predator community of the broader region. Grasshoppers are found in multi-species assemblages in geographically-proximate micro-habitats and are subject to a number of predators from a wide variety of taxa. The main defenses of most grasshoppers are the opposed strategies of hiding and fleeing. More structurally-complex habitats should favor hiding while more open habitats should favor fleeing. To test this hypothesis I evaluated the micro-habitat preferences of nine species of sympatric grasshoppers found in fields at Raleigh, North Carolina. While several species had distinct preferences for habitats with taller or shorter vegetation, the presence or absence of vegetative cover was an important factor for nearly all species. Escape behavior was also recorded for all nine species. Species-specific differences were seen in flight-initiation distances and flight distances. Camouflage was evaluated using a computer program in which humans tried to locate camouflaged grasshoppers as rapidly as possible. Because any close correlation between camouflage and habitat assumes that camouflage will be lost if it is superseded by other defenses in a given habitat, this assumption was investigated. Twenty-one island- endemic species of birds and mammals that have few to no predators when compared to their closest relatives on the mainland were located. -

Abstract Recent reports of insect declines across Europe and other parts of the world have emphasised the generally poor baseline that exists for assessing changes in biodiversity. One important source of untapped baseline distribution data is field notebooks, which are often associated with the collection activities of museums and other scientific institutions and may be decades or even centuries old. Over 220 field notebooks are associated with the grasshopper (Caelifera) collection in the Australian National Insect Collection, containing detailed notes on the times and places species were collected as well as vegetation and soil descriptions. In 2019, we resurveyed 45 locations from three of these notebooks from the 1940s, to assess the potential value of larger-scale efforts in the future. We found substantial differences in grasshopper species richness and composition between the surveys; richness was generally higher in our survey, and some species showed dramatic increases in range and occurrence, whereas others remained relatively static. There was also evidence for vegetation state transitions in some areas, including increased weediness and shrub thickening, which may be associated with changes in the grasshopper fauna. -

The main reasons for this species being eligible are i) inferred restricted geographical range (AOO = 124 km2), ii) severe fragmentation, iii) historical and inferred ongoing decline in abundance, habitat availability and quality and iv) ongoing threats (and poorly understood management requirements). This species was the focus of early chromosomal research (see Grodwohl 2017 for a summary) and unlike many insects, there was extensive survey work performed in the past which along with recent surveys of known sites, allows an historical assessment of the species’ decline. This species is now locally extinct at many previously known locations. Description and Taxonomy Keyacris scurra (Rehn 1952) Key’s Matchstick Grasshopper is a small (females ~25 mm, males ~18mm), slender, wingless grasshopper characterised by its slanted face, splayed hind femora and ensiform antennae. This species occurs in several colour forms, with brown being the most common (Farrow 2018). -

They consist of diversity, evenness, dominance and richness of inhabiting taxa in that area. This study was carried out to check the diversity among species of class insecta near Kamal Pur canal and Dingroo canal of District Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan. Total 117 specimens were collected belonging to 7 orders, 17 families, 22 genera and 27 species from Dingroo canal while total 140 specimens were collected belonging to 7 orders, 23 families, 29 genera and 32 species from Kamal Pur canal. So, keeping in view the importance of these aspects, calculations were made as per Shannon Diversity Index and SPDIVERS.BAS software. Diversity was recorded maximum in Kamal Pur canal (1.0350) while least diversity was recorded for Dingroo canal (1.0293). -

Barkworth has been recognised as a major threat to biodiversity in the endangered natural grasslands of south-eastern Australia. Research was undertaken in Canberra and Melbourne grasslands to examine mechanisms by which N. neesiana invades native grasslands, the impacts of invasion on vascular plant and invertebrate biodiversity and mechanisms of impact. Time series analysis of historical aerial photographs demonstrated that invasion was absent or very slow when infestations abutted healthy grassland, but grasslands in poor condition experienced linear infestation expansion rates >5 m per year. A field experiment demonstrated that major disturbance (death of the native grasses) was required for N. neesiana recruitment from panicle seeds and that intact grassland was not invaded, even with high propagule pressure. Gaps of c. 1 m (as opposed to 10-30 cm) were required for establishment. Pin transect sampling demonstrated that increased senescence of Themeda triandra swards correlated with greater invasion. Nassella neesiana was found to deplete soil water in spring compared to T. triandra, a likely mechanism of biodiversity impact. Areas occupied by N. neesiana in three disparate grasslands were found to have significantly reduced native vascular plant diversity (species m-2). -

SPECIES DIVERSITY, SEASONAL ABUNDANCE AND MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF GRASSHOPPER (ORTHOPTERA: CAELIFERA) IN RAJSHAHI CITY, BANGLADESH Shah Hussain Ahmad Mahdi, Mursalin Ahmed and MD. Kamrul Ahsan Department of Zoology, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh *Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT A study from July 2016 to June 2017 was carried out to assess the species diversity, seasonal abundance and morphometric characteristics of grasshopper (Orthoptera: Caelifera) at Rajshahi city of Rajshahi District, Bangladesh. A total number of 286 individuals of grasshopper were examined during the study. Eight species of grasshopper were identified under seven genera of 2 families. The numbers of identified species were seven and one, and their percentages were calculated as 90.9% and 9.1% in families Acrididae and Tetrigidae respectively. Based on monthly occurrence, four species of grasshopper were found throughout 12 months, three were 9-11 months and one was 6-8 months. The highest species abundance of grasshoppers was recorded in the month of July to August and lowest in November to January. Among the collected species the status of Camnula pellucida was very common (VC) and rest seven species were considered as not rare (NR). The Simpson’s diversity index (1-D) for grasshopper species was 0.80. For the study of inter-specific variations, morphometric analysis of nine parameters viz. length of body, antenna, foreleg, midleg, hindleg, forewing and hindwing; width of forewing and hindwing was evaluated. The lengths or widths of these parameters were measured by ImageJ software (1.48v) and data were analyzed by GraphPad InStat 3 and MS Excel 2007. -
