HALTERES, Volume 4, 1-11, 2013 ISSN 0973-1555 © SHBBIR R KHAN AND NEELKAMAL RASTOGI Recolonisation patterns of orthopteran species in successional stages of revegetated coal mine sites Shbbir R Khan and Neelkamal Rastogi * Insect Behavioural Ecology Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Centre of Advanced Study, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi – 221 005, U.P., India (*e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract The diversity and abundance of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera was studied in coal mine spoils of different ages (0- 10 year old) located in Singrauli and the adjoining border area between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in India. The abundance of the 21 orthopteran species (belonging to 16 genera) showed significant variations in 0-8 year old mine sites relative to the 10 year old reference site. Orthopteran alpha diversity increased sharply in the 2 year old site. The gradual increase in alpha diversity in the 4-10 year old sites did not demonstrate any significant differences. However, abundance and number of grasshopper species showed a clear linear increase with increase with mine site rehabilitation. Overlap in orthopteran rank abundance curves obtained for 4-10 year old sites is probably due to differences in the occurrence, abundance and diversity patterns of grasshopper and cricket species with increase in mine site rehabilitation age. Our results demonstrate that grasshopper species assemblages are highly sensitive to variations in the level of anthropogenically-caused disturbance, due to mining activities. Thus, the abundance patterns of grasshoppers, including those of habitat specialists, may be of significance in evaluation of the restoration progress in degraded ecosystems, such as mine sites. -

ABSTRACT BUTLER, ERIC MICHAEL. Habitat Selection and Anti-Predator Responses of Acridid Grasshoppers. (Under the direction of Marianne Niedzlek-Feaver and Harold Heatwole.) Most prey species use a variety of defenses to prevent their capture by predators. Habitat can have both direct effects on the effectiveness of these defenses by providing refuges, the backgrounds against which prey species are camouflaged, and, indirectly, by altering exposure to the predator community of the broader region. Grasshoppers are found in multi-species assemblages in geographically-proximate micro-habitats and are subject to a number of predators from a wide variety of taxa. The main defenses of most grasshoppers are the opposed strategies of hiding and fleeing. More structurally-complex habitats should favor hiding while more open habitats should favor fleeing. To test this hypothesis I evaluated the micro-habitat preferences of nine species of sympatric grasshoppers found in fields at Raleigh, North Carolina. While several species had distinct preferences for habitats with taller or shorter vegetation, the presence or absence of vegetative cover was an important factor for nearly all species. Escape behavior was also recorded for all nine species. Species-specific differences were seen in flight-initiation distances and flight distances. Camouflage was evaluated using a computer program in which humans tried to locate camouflaged grasshoppers as rapidly as possible. Because any close correlation between camouflage and habitat assumes that camouflage will be lost if it is superseded by other defenses in a given habitat, this assumption was investigated. Twenty-one island- endemic species of birds and mammals that have few to no predators when compared to their closest relatives on the mainland were located. -

Keynote Address Making taxonomy and collections-based research relevant in a changing world Bryan Lessard Australian National Insect Collection, CSIRO, Black Mountain, Clunies Ross Street, Acton, ACT, 2601 In a time of taxonomic decline, insect apocalypses and fake news, it’s becoming increasingly more important to conduct and promote our biodiversity research. Recent advances in technology have breathed new life into natural history collections: metabarcoding allows us to identify new insect pollinators in threatened alpine zones; whole genome shotgun sequencing allows us to map mitochondrial genomes from pinned specimens of medially important mosquitoes; and transcriptome sequencing allow us to identify protein-coding genes that cause anaphylactic reactions to horse fly bites. Modern digitisation has also rapidly increased the speed at which we database our collections, opening them to the public and other researchers throughout the world. Taxonomic knowledge and collection data can be useful to inform industry and government policy, as a recent taxonomic revision of the Australian soldier flies led to collaborations with small to medium sized businesses and the opportunity to advise policy makers on the use of insects as livestock feed. Collections can also provide specimen data to support global industry trends, as the United Nations estimate that the emerging edible insect market will be worth $1.5 billion by 2023. A recent Australian edible insect symposium identified a commercial need for native edible insect species that are currently being identified using entomological collections. New platforms of communication like social media have revolutionised the way we share our science in real time and allow us to reach a wider audience formed of the general public, researchers and industry. -

Herein, we provide the first records of the presence of this genus in Brazil. These new records, based on entomological collection data and photographic records, extend the known distribution of Bactrophora dominans Westwood, 1842 to include the Brazilian Amazonian region. Both records emphasize the importance of natural history collections and the significance of the iNaturalist web-based application as an instrumental tool in this discovery. Internal male genitalia have been considered as an excellent taxonomic character because of a widespread belief that they are less subject to selective pressures from environment, and thus more stable than external characters. Furthermore, based on a notion that evolu- tion proceeds from simple to complex, early taxonomists who shaped the higher classification of Acridomorpha considered those groups with less differentiated and membranous phallic structures as primitive and used this notion to deduce a phylogeny of Acridomorpha. In this study, we test these ideas based on a cladistic analysis of male phallic structures and a character optimization analysis to assess the level of homoplasy and synapomorphy for those phallic characters that have been traditionally used for the Acridomorpha systematics. We also perform an independent test of the phylogenetic utility of male phal- lic structures based on a molecular phylogeny. We show that while some phallic structures have strong phylogenetic signal, many traditionally used characters are highly homoplasious. However, even those homoplasious characters are often informative in inferring relationships. Finally, we argue that the notion that evolution proceeds in increasing complexity is largely unfounded and difficult to quantify in the higher-level classification of Acridomorpha. -

Abstract Recent reports of insect declines across Europe and other parts of the world have emphasised the generally poor baseline that exists for assessing changes in biodiversity. One important source of untapped baseline distribution data is field notebooks, which are often associated with the collection activities of museums and other scientific institutions and may be decades or even centuries old. Over 220 field notebooks are associated with the grasshopper (Caelifera) collection in the Australian National Insect Collection, containing detailed notes on the times and places species were collected as well as vegetation and soil descriptions. In 2019, we resurveyed 45 locations from three of these notebooks from the 1940s, to assess the potential value of larger-scale efforts in the future. We found substantial differences in grasshopper species richness and composition between the surveys; richness was generally higher in our survey, and some species showed dramatic increases in range and occurrence, whereas others remained relatively static. There was also evidence for vegetation state transitions in some areas, including increased weediness and shrub thickening, which may be associated with changes in the grasshopper fauna. -

This species is endemic to NSW, the ACT and Victoria. The main reasons for this species being eligible are i) inferred restricted geographical range (AOO = 124 km2), ii) severe fragmentation, iii) historical and inferred ongoing decline in abundance, habitat availability and quality and iv) ongoing threats (and poorly understood management requirements). This species was the focus of early chromosomal research (see Grodwohl 2017 for a summary) and unlike many insects, there was extensive survey work performed in the past which along with recent surveys of known sites, allows an historical assessment of the species’ decline. This species is now locally extinct at many previously known locations. Description and Taxonomy Keyacris scurra (Rehn 1952) Key’s Matchstick Grasshopper is a small (females ~25 mm, males ~18mm), slender, wingless grasshopper characterised by its slanted face, splayed hind femora and ensiform antennae. This species occurs in several colour forms, with brown being the most common (Farrow 2018).
