Arranca con la hipótesis de que la posibilidad de creación en México de porno exclusivo para varones gay se inserta en la visibili- dad adquirida por el Movimiento de Disidencia Sexual a nivel mundial, facilitado por el mercado como elemento preponderante en la globalización. El documento presenta algunas aproximaciones teóricas a la pornografía y sus géneros, presenta un panorama sobre la industria porno internacio- nal, con énfasis en la norteamericana; revisa la breve historia del porno gay mexicano y analiza el contexto y la forma de nacimiento del porno gay mexicano y su relación con la visibilidad lograda por el movimiento de disidencia sexual. This paper aims to present an overview on the pornog- raphy produced in Mexico by and for the male gay community, in the fields of video and film. It is based on the hypothesis that the possibility of creating gay pornography in Mexico is incorporated into the visibility gained from its inclusion in the Sexual Dissidence Movement on a global scale and facilitated by this market as the dominant element in the globalization process. This document presents some theoretical approaches to pornography and its genres, as well as presenting an over- view on the international porn industry, with a special emphasis on the North American market; it presents a brief history of gay porn and examines the context and the evolution of Mexican gay porn and its relationship with the visibility achieved by, and through, the movement of sexual dissidence.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: STAYING POWER: THE MAINSTREAMING OF THE HARD-CORE PORNOGRAPHIC FILM INDUSTRY, 1969-1990 Stephen Patrick Johnson, Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Directed By: Professor James B. Gilbert, Department of History When publicly screened hard-core pornographic films first appeared in theatres, in 1969, they generated less than $1 million in annual revenue. By 1990, revenue approached $600 million. By 2000, estimates placed U.S. revenue between $5 and $15 billion. This dissertation examines the hard-core industry’s growth by concentrating on changes in the mode of consumption as well as noting changes in the films themselves. And it ties the story of the industry and its customers to the intersecting narratives of the Supreme Court, anti-pornography activism, and the Federal government. The industry provided a product desired by a large and growing number of Americans. Videotape technology moved hard-core film from the highly contested public space of the motion picture theatre to the more easily defended private space of the home. The more effective the films were in arousing viewers and the more secret their consumption, the more the industry grew. The nature of the debate over hard- core pornography favored those defending consumption. While opponents of hard- core emphasized pornography’s putative harm, evidence for these claims never rose above the anecdotal level. Finally, successful prosecution of hard-core films became increasingly untenable. Even when Federal and state prosecutions increased during the 1980s, a grudging cultural toleration of hard-core films meant prosecutors could no longer rely upon juries to return guilty verdicts.
