Habitat Fragmentation Habitat Fragmentation Habitat fragmentation describes discontinuities of an environment. Causes that alter the environment: Geological processes Human activity - Soil erosion - Urban development - Agriculture - Desertification - Increase the rate of - Succession geological processes Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall MJ's Music Video: Earth Song Write a 3+ Sentence summary of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAi3VTSdTxU Analyze the image and explain how this image reflects Habitat Fragmentaiton. Species Invasive Invasive Invasive Species Invasive species are organisms that are not native to a specific location and cause damage. Common invasive species traits include the following: • Fast growth and reproduction • High dispersal ability • Tolerance of a wide range of environmental conditions • Ability to live off a wide range of food types Write a 3+ Sentence summary of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spTWwqVP_2s Caster oil plants came from South Africa →Bullfrogs eat other tadpoles, affecting the Western US. Raccoons stowed away on ships and they carry diseases → Zebra Mussels from Russia damage ships and harbors Armadillo from South/ Central America, with no predators, and not harmful → Rabbits damage crops and the Britain government Copyright Pearson Prentice Hallspends millions on pest control Invasive Species Usually, humans transport species around the world either accidentally or intentionally. Invasive species reproduce rapidly because their new habitat lack the predators that would control their population. Hundreds of invasive species are already causing ecological problems in the United States. Summary Population Pollution EQ: EQ: Note: Note Analyze Chart 1. Video Reaction 2. Dynamics Population Population Population The scientific study of human populations is called demography, which examines the characteristics of human populations and attempts to explain how those populations will change over time. Three important characteristics of a population are its: • geographic distribution: where and how close • population density: how many. • Individuals that enter (immigration) • Individuals that leave (emmigration) • growth rate: birth versus death. Don’t draw: Analyzing the Chart: 1. Determine the population increase from 1950 to 2010. 2. Does the 2050 prediction make sense and why? World-O-Meter http://www.worldometers.inf o/world-population How did we grow so fast? Write a 3+ summary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcSX4ytEfcE What graph do you think human population represents? Exponential growth: Logistic growth: Under ideal conditions with Occurs when a population's unlimited resources, a population growth slows or stops will grow exponentially. (carrying capacity), as resources become less available. Sketch the Graph Human Population Growth Human Population is EXPONENTIAL growing! Do we have a carrying capacity? Human Impact in an Acronym: H.I.P.P.C.O • Habitat Fragmentation • Invasive Species • Population • Pollution • Climate • Over exploitation EQ: Understand the different types and consequence of pollutions. Pollution (land, air, water, light, noise) light, water, air, (land, Pollution images Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall Pollution Pollution is the process of making a natural environment dirty and unsafe or unsuitable to use by introducing a contaminant. There are different types of pollution: Draw an Land: landfill wastes, soil contamination example Water: sewage, non-biodegradable material Air: smog, acid rain, combustion of carbon Noise: urban/city noises, sonic waves Light: city lights 1. Identify 3 different types of pollution 2. Personally reflect of the video. (How did it make you feel? As a species, what do humans need to change?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfGMYdalClU Read: Pollution in the Food Chain! 1.One of the most serious problems occurs when toxic compounds accumulate in the tissues of organisms. 2.“Di-chloro-di-phenyl tri-chloroe-thane”, or DDT, one of the first pesticides, is a goodexample of this. For a long time DDT was considered harmless, and it drained into rivers and streams in low concentrations. 3.However, DDT is non-biodegradable, which means that it cannot be broken down by organisms- being hazardous. 4.Once DDT is picked up by organisms, it cannot be eliminated from their bodies. 5.By the early 1970s, DDT was banned in the U.S. and in most other industrialized countries; as a result, affected bird populations have recovered. The following video segment adapted from American Experience: "Rachel Carson's Silent Spring" tells the story of how biologist Rachel Carson was driven to write Silent Spring, a book that questioned the safety of pesticide use in the United States. Video Question: What are the three ways poisons can enter the human body? https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/envh 10.sci.life.eco.silentspring/rachel-carsons-silent- spring/ Biomagnification • A consequence to pollution, can be biological magnification • Where concentrations of a harmful substance increase in organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain or food web. • Other Scenarios: • Mercury • Teflon • BPA Human Impact in an Acronym: H.I.P.P.C.O • Habitat Fragmentation • Invasive Species • Population • Pollution • Climate • Over exploitation Climate Overexploitation EQ: EQ: Note Note Video: Tragedy of the Commons Note and Video: Summary Summary EQ: How is the climate affected by the carbon cycle? Change Climate Carbon leads to Global Warming Climate Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over an extended period of time (ex: decades to millions of years) Climate change is caused by factors such as: 1. Biotic processes 2. Variations in solar radiation 3. Plate tectonics 4. Volcanic eruptions 5. Certain human activities AKA global warming. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtW2rrLHs08 https://sos.noaa.gov/Datasets/view-movie.html?video=frozen_400 1. What did you notice? 2. How did the Earth show the warming and cooling? Explain. 3. How is the carbon cycle connected to the ice fluctuation? Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall Human Impact in an Acronym: H.I.P.P.C.O • Habitat Fragmentation • Invasive Species • Population • Pollution • Climate • Over exploitation EQ: How is the Tragedy of the Commons an example of overexploitation? Overexploitation Over-Exploitation Overexploitation refers to harvesting a renewable resource to the point of diminishing returns. Populations are harvested at a rate that is unsustainable: Used more than replenished can lead to an extinction Talk About it... Create a mental list of resources that can be over exploitied. Be ready to share. Over-Exploitation Natural Resource: Overexploitation type: Examples: - Grazing pastures over-grazing in stock cows - Game animals endangered species whales - Fish stocks over-fishing salmon - Forests over-logging redwood - Water aquifers over-drafting Cal. Coast. Basin Overexploitation (Cont.) • Overexploitation is NOT an activity limited to humans • Invasive predators & herbivores can overexploit native flora (plants) and fauna (animals). • An unchecked predator can overexploit their own food resources to the point of extinction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxC161GvMPc Overexploitation Tragedy of the Commons Write this OR recap in your own words: The tragedy of the commons is an economic theory of a situation within a shared-resource system where individual users acting independently and rationally according to their own self-interest behave contrary to the common good of all users by depleting that resource. Friday Quiz: • Study H.I.P.P.C.O! Identify each letter- Describe the human impact H I P P C O H Human activity reduces biodiversity by: •Altering habitats (H) I •Introducing foreign species (I) P •Introducing toxic material into food webs (P) P •Growing exponentially as a species(P) • C Adding more CO2 in the atmosphere (C) O •Hunting species to extinction (O) Leading to extinction or endangerment of species, which results in less genetic diversity.
