BOISE STATE CHAPTER RECEIVES CHAPTER OF EXCELLENCE AWARD The music education students of the Boise State NAfME Collegiate chapter were honored with a 2012 national Chapter of Excellence Award for Service. The annual award “recognizes chapters at universities around the country for successful music programs, professional development, recruitment, and service, and is based on significant contributions made by chapters to the development of the NAfME Collegiate program at their institutions.” The chapter’s service project was known as the Accompanist program, and the purpose was to help new incoming music education majors bridge successfully into the university. Each new freshman or transfer student was paired with an experienced returning music education student "accompanist," nominated by the Collegiate chapter leadership. These accompanist mentors were asked to share their experience and advice with the new members of the major. The accompanists began corresponding with new students in the summer to make sure they were on the right track for completing orientation and enrolling in fall classes. The accompanists also helped new students with organizing housing, touring the music building and other parts of campus, getting in touch with advisors, providing tutoring or tutor referrals to help with music classwork, and a host of other helpful activities that continued throughout the fall semester. Through this program, every incoming student had the opportunity to have a peer-level point of contact before classes even began. The new students were able to ask questions they 2013 NAfME NORTHWEST DIVISION CONFERENCE might not feel comfortable asking faculty, and in some cases February 14–17, 2013 the accompanists were able to relay scheduling or logistical concerns to the department administration.
