ANNUAL REPORT 2015 16_A70_TV_Acad_Ad.qxp_Layout 1 7/8/16 11:43 AM Page 1 PROUD MEMBER OF »CBS THE TELEVISION ACADEMY 2 ©2016 CBS Broadcasting Inc. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AS THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF CONTENT HAVE INCREASED in what is widely regarded as television’s second Golden Age, so have employment opportunities for the talented men and women who create that programming. And as our industry, and the content we produce, have become more relevant, so has the relevance of the Television Academy increased as an essential resource for television professionals. In 2015, this was reflected in the steady rise in our membership — surpassing 20,000 for the first time in our history — as well as the expanding slate of Academy-sponsored activities and the heightened attention paid to such high-profile events as the Television Academy Honors and, of course, the Creative Arts Awards and the Emmy Awards. Navigating an industry in the midst of such profound change is both exciting and, at times, a bit daunting. Reimagined models of production and distribution — along with technological innovations and the emergence of new over-the-top platforms — have led to a seemingly endless surge of creativity, and an array of viewing options. As the leading membership organization for television professionals and home to the industry’s most prestigious award, the Academy is committed to remaining at the vanguard of all aspects of television. Toward that end, we are always evaluating our own practices in order to stay ahead of industry changes, and we are proud to guide the conversation for television’s future generations. -

Constructions of Deviance and the Performance Of
“WHAT DON’T BLACK GIRLS DO?” : CONSTRUCTIONS OF DEVIANCE AND THE PERFORMANCE OF BLACK FEMALE SEXUALITY by KIARA M. T. HILL JENNIFER SHOAFF, COMMITTEE CHAIR UTZ MCKNIGHT RACHEL RAIMIST A THESIS In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Gender and Race Studies in the Graduate School of the University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2015 Copyright Kiara Monique Hill 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This research interrogates the ways in which Black women process and negotiate their sexual identities. By connecting the historical exploitation of Black female bodies to the way Black female deviant identities are manufactured and consumed currently, I was able to show not only the evolution of Black women’s attitudes towards sexuality, but also the ways in which these attitudes manifest when policing deviancy amongst each other. Chapter 1 gives historical insight to the way that deviancy has been inextricably linked to the construction of Blackness. Using the Post-Reconstruction Era as my point of entry, I demonstrate the ways in which Black bodies were stigmatized as sexually deviant, and how the use of Black caricatures buttressed the consumption of this narrative by whites. I explain how countering this narrative became fundamental to the evolution of Black female sexual politics, and how ultimately bodily agency was later restored through sexual deviancy. Chapter 2 interrogates the way “authenticity” is propagated within the genre of reality TV. Black women are expected to perform deviant identities that coincide with controlling images so that the “authenticity” of Black womanhood is consumed by mainstream audiences. -

Guilty by Association: an Analysis of Shaunie O'neal's Online/On-Air
Journal of Research on Women andJournal Gender of Research 40 on Women and Gender Guilty by association: Volume 5, 40-61 © The Author(s) 2014 An analysis of Shaunie O’Neal’s Reprints and Permission: email [email protected] Texas Digital Library: online/on-air image restoration tactics http://www.tdl.org Mia Moody-Ramirez, Isla Hamilton-Short, and Kathryn Mitchell “He that lieth down with dogs shall rise up with fleas.” —Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanack Abstract The growing use of social media as a source of networking has spurred a growing interest in using the medium as a tool for image repair. Broadening the application of Benoit’s image repair theory, this case study looks at the image repair tactics of Shaunie O’Neal who became a celebrity during her marriage to former NBA basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, their subse- quent divorce, and the creation of her VH1 show, Basketball Wives (BBW). Throughout the four seasons of BBW, O’Neal’s cast members perpetuated negative stereotypes of Black women such as “the angry Black woman,” “the Jezebel” and “the tragic mulatto.” While O’Neal did not exhibit these characteristics on the show, she became guilty by association. To repair her tarnished image, the reality TV actress used her Facebook and Twitter feeds and episodes of Season 4 of BBW to implement various image repair tactics. Study findings indicate episodes of a reality TV show and social media may provide a viable platform for a celebrity to repair his or her tarnished image; however, tactics must be authentic and consistent. -

THE REALITY OF TELEVISED JEZEBELS AND SAPPHIRES: BLOGS AND THE NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN ON REALITY TELEVISION by SAFIYA REID Under the Direction of Dr. Marian Meyers ABSTRACT Americans spend an average of 5.1 hours a day viewing television, with reality television as the most prevalent type of programming. Some of the top reality television shows feature African American women in negative and limiting roles. However, little research examines how the stereotypes presented on reality television about African American women are viewed by the audiences
