  • Constructions of Deviance and the Performance Of
“WHAT DON’T BLACK GIRLS DO?” : CONSTRUCTIONS OF DEVIANCE AND THE PERFORMANCE OF BLACK FEMALE SEXUALITY by KIARA M. T. HILL JENNIFER SHOAFF, COMMITTEE CHAIR UTZ MCKNIGHT RACHEL RAIMIST A THESIS In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Gender and Race Studies in the Graduate School of the University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2015 Copyright Kiara Monique Hill 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This research interrogates the ways in which Black women process and negotiate their sexual identities. By connecting the historical exploitation of Black female bodies to the way Black female deviant identities are manufactured and consumed currently, I was able to show not only the evolution of Black women’s attitudes towards sexuality, but also the ways in which these attitudes manifest when policing deviancy amongst each other. Chapter 1 gives historical insight to the way that deviancy has been inextricably linked to the construction of Blackness. Using the Post-Reconstruction Era as my point of entry, I demonstrate the ways in which Black bodies were stigmatized as sexually deviant, and how the use of Black caricatures buttressed the consumption of this narrative by whites. I explain how countering this narrative became fundamental to the evolution of Black female sexual politics, and how ultimately bodily agency was later restored through sexual deviancy. Chapter 2 interrogates the way “authenticity” is propagated within the genre of reality TV. Black women are expected to perform deviant identities that coincide with controlling images so that the “authenticity” of Black womanhood is consumed by mainstream audiences.

  • Guilty by Association: an Analysis of Shaunie O'neal's Online/On-Air
Journal of Research on Women andJournal Gender of Research 40 on Women and Gender Guilty by association: Volume 5, 40-61 © The Author(s) 2014 An analysis of Shaunie O’Neal’s Reprints and Permission: email [email protected] Texas Digital Library: online/on-air image restoration tactics http://www.tdl.org Mia Moody-Ramirez, Isla Hamilton-Short, and Kathryn Mitchell “He that lieth down with dogs shall rise up with fleas.” —Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanack Abstract The growing use of social media as a source of networking has spurred a growing interest in using the medium as a tool for image repair. Broadening the application of Benoit’s image repair theory, this case study looks at the image repair tactics of Shaunie O’Neal who became a celebrity during her marriage to former NBA basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, their subse- quent divorce, and the creation of her VH1 show, Basketball Wives (BBW). Throughout the four seasons of BBW, O’Neal’s cast members perpetuated negative stereotypes of Black women such as “the angry Black woman,” “the Jezebel” and “the tragic mulatto.” While O’Neal did not exhibit these characteristics on the show, she became guilty by association. To repair her tarnished image, the reality TV actress used her Facebook and Twitter feeds and episodes of Season 4 of BBW to implement various image repair tactics. Study findings indicate episodes of a reality TV show and social media may provide a viable platform for a celebrity to repair his or her tarnished image; however, tactics must be authentic and consistent.

ABSTRACT For decades African-American women and Latinas have lamented the abundance of negative and unrealistic images of them reflected on television. Such images appear to be pervasive today on reality television shows, the most popular television show genre, where many historic negative stereotypes of women of color are conveyed. Social television, the practice of watching television and simultaneously commenting on social media, is now common among viewers. The aim of this research is to determine if the same old stereotypes of women of color on television are finding their way to the new medium of Twitter. This study is a textual analysis of tweets from viewers who watched episodes of seasons one and three one of the Vh1 reality show Basketball Wives LA and the WE TV reality program Mary Mary. Both shows feature women of color in the cast. This study found that the social television conversation among viewers of these shows detected racial and gendered stereotypes.

  • Baseball Wives”: Erika Williams Tells Her Side of the Story
“Baseball Wives”: Erika Williams Tells Her Side of the Story Written by By: Vanja Veric The popularity of reality television not only seems to be growing, but expanding at an insane level. There is a reality show for every taste from longtime favorite “Survivor,” to dramatic guilty pleasure “Jersey Shore.” But one of the most popular premises on reality TV is the endless barrage of “wives” programs. Everything from the “Real Housewives” to “Basketball Wives,” America has become fascinated with the personal lives of the wealthy and privileged. VH1 expanded its popular "wives" franchise in November with the new show “Baseball Wives” set in Scottsdale and revolving around the wives and girlfriends of professional baseball players. Erika Williams, wife of retired five-time all-star Diamondbacks third baseman Matt Williams, was one of wives cast in the new show, as well as one of the first to leave the program. “Producers had come to me two years ago and what was described to me was that VH1 was looking to have a different audience,” Williams says. “They described this show as being the ‘Real Housewives’ meets the ‘[Lifestyles] of the Rich and Famous’ where they would highlight our charity and projects.” Unfortunately for Williams, television audiences were in for a slightly different viewing experience. VH1 described the wives as: “No shrinking violets here, these ladies are fiercely protective of their turf and their men and if they have to bring on a little drama -- then so be it.” “When you’re a baseball wife, you’re representing a larger group and it was an opportunity to show the behind the scenes of this crazy lifestyle,” Williams says.
