BD's Mongolian Grill BBQ Located right above the Detroit is BD’s Mongolian Grill. This restaurant was the first US chain to open in Mongolia and is very similar to the locations in the United State. The premise is a simple: walk through the buffet line and choose your fresh vegetables, meat, and sauce. Then take it to the grillers, who use 3-foot (.9m) metal "swords" and cook your bowl on an 8-foot (2.4 m) diameter gas flat top grill reaching temperatures of 600 degrees Fahrenheit (300 degrees Celsius). Since we had already eaten lunch, we only had some gelato and a cappuccino. All five of the flavors that we tasted were outstanding, and the cappuccino was as good as any you would find in Europe. *California One of Ulaanbaatar’s most popular restaurants, this place has an array of eclectic menu items; including a spicy chicken sandwich on ciabatta bread with garlic mashed potatoes and chicken burritos with pickled jalapeños on the side. There is a huge variety of food to choose from, and the portions are generous and heavy on the calories (this place is a real diet killer). breakfasts like eggs and bacon, eggs Benedict and pancakes. Like the lunch and dinner meals, the portions are very generous. Overall, the restaurant (including the restrooms) is clean and provides a nice setting for a leisurely meal. The only negative about California is that it can get quite smoky during peak lunch and dinner hours. It is definitely better to go at off-peak times. The wait staff is always courteous and most speak good English. Upon walking in, the place feels like a typical American brewpub: dark décor, bar seating, a large dining room, and flat screen TVs showing ESPN. The menu is also what you would expect from a brewpub, with a few Mongolian dishes also included. The huge facility has a stage for a band, private rooms, a bar, and a huge formal dining room with large bay windows overlooking Seoul Street. The extensive menu gives even the pickiest eater a satisfying meal choice. The meals are nicely proportioned and very tasty. Although this is one of the more expensive restaurants in UB, it is definitely worth treating yourself to the elegance of the Ivy Restaurant. Modern Nomads Modern Nomads is a chain that extends beyond Ulaanbaatar with a location in Darkhan and even Ulan Ude, Russia. Modern Nomads, is located a stone’s throw from Sukhbaatar Square. The menu is extensive, with both western and Mongolian dishes. There is a translation for every item, as well as a picture of the dish. To get there from Star Apartments, take a right on Olympic Street, left on Peace Avenue, an immediate right so that you are on the east side of Sukhbaatar Square, and then your first right. Oasis Oasis offers schnitzels, German pastries, and Schwartzwalder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cake). OASIS is a modernly styled and lovingly furnished guesthouse with a public cafe. Opened in January 2006, it is run by a friendly German-Austrian couple, who have lived in Mongolia for more than 7 years. The café has the feel of a small Bavarian café and has a small but varied menu.

It is not in a location that is convenient to walk to, and drivers should honk at the gate so that they can park inside the grounds. It is in a rough looking part of town (just off the traffic circle by the Catholic cathedral on the road heading towards Terelj). It is a favorite place for bikers to stay while traversing the vast country. There is even more than great food available here. You can rent a motorcycle, stay in a ger, or even order custom made European quality pine furniture (they teach local Mongolians how to do this to help people break the cycle of poverty). Opanas Ukrainian Restaurant 1 (near the embassy) Waitresses and waiters in Ukrainian costumes greeted and seated us. If you want to have a lunch outside the Embassy but do not want to drive too far, the Consular Section recommends Opanas. Their prices are not high, and they have a choice of carry-out readymade meals and cakes. Try to arrive before 12:30, as it gets quite crowded after that.

Opanas Ukrainian Restaurant 2 (near Gandan Monastery) As you walk in, the entire restaurant is nicely decorated with tiled walls and floors. This restaurant has another location next to Sky Department Store and seems to have a very similar menu, although the one near Sky is not nearly as big or nicely decorated. To get there, go west on Peace Avenue and take a right on the one way street near Narantuul (look for the Hello Kitty store on the left hand side at the same intersection). On the day we went, it was the first right after the barricades ended in the middle of Peace Avenue separating traffic. These are some of the names you will hear when expats refer to this café, which is one of the most popular hangouts for Westerners. Although the lunches here are great, Sachers is really known for its pastries and desserts. To get there from Star Apartments, go right on Olympic Street and then a left on Peace Avenue. At the flower center (at the second intersection with a stoplight), go right. After passing through the first light, Sachers will be on your left hand side. Parking is readily available in the area. Sizzling Express Sizzling Express is located on the first floor of the Metro Mall (located on Little Ring Road about a mile and half from the Embassy). For anyone who has served some time in Washington, DC at State, they should be familiar with Sizzling Express located at Columbia Plaza. This sister restaurant is a smaller version and also offers a wide assortment of tasty vegetable dishes which are sold by weight, as well as a variety of main dishes and soups all served cafeteria style.
