Notes for Samuel Moore: Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News (WA : 1848 - 1864), Friday 6 July 1849, page 2 DEATHS. On Wednesday, the 4th instant, at Perth, SAMUEL MOORE, ESQ., M. L. C. aged 47 years.

Inquirer (Perth, WA : 1840 - 1855), Wednesday 11 July 1849, page 2 We regret to announce that, since our last issue, the colony has, by the death of Samuel Moore, Esq., lost another valued member of its community, and one who had partaken of the dangers and privations incident to its formation. As an active and stirring man of business, he was well known to the settlers generally, and by them much esteemed. Mr. S. Moore had suffered for some months past from an affection of the heart, and expired in Perth on Wednesday last, about 3 a.m. His remains were removed on the Friday following to the cemetery of the Middle Swan Church, and there interred. Much disappointment and annoyance was expressed by the numerous friends of the deceased that, owing to some negligence or inattention, the time appointed and given out for the funeral to take place, was anticipated by an hour, and that, in consequence, numbers were deprived of an opportunity of paying the last tribute of respect to the remains of one they had so much esteemed when living. The lamented deceased was a Justice of the Peace for this colony and member of the Legislative Council, and has left a widow with five young children to deplore the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and father.

Samuel Moore and Dorothy Mary Jane Dalgety had the following children:

Indeed, she was nearly always working fo'help the institutions. He did not think, his Lordship added, that there, was anyone in Perth .whose removal from their niidst would be so much felt by those Institutions. It was not-that she was wealthy, but because she devoted lar time and talents to working and collecting and helping in every possible way. She was, in fact, a solendid example of a kindly, -sympathetio Christian woman. The hymn "Now the labourer's task is o'er" was siung, and after the Benediction "the 'Dead March" was played by Mr:. Notes for William Dalgety Moore: Western Mail (Perth, WA : 1885 - 1954), Saturday 30 April 1910, page 34 MR. W. D. MOORE. At his residence, "Woodside," East Fremantle, on Friday of last week, there passed away at the ripe age of 74 years an old identity whose name will ever occupy a place in the history of the State, in the person of William Dalgety Moore. For several months past the late Mr. Moore's health has been most indifferent, and some days ago he took to his bed. Despite the closest of medical attention, however, he gradually sank, and in the presence of his family passed away at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. The deceased was born at Oakover, on the Swan River, in 1835, his father, the late Samuel Moore, being one of the pioneers of the colony. When a youth of 15 the deceased commenced his career in the office of the then Surveyor-General (Mr. J. S. Roe), where he remained for four years. The adventurous spirit that prompted the sire to leave the old land for Australia proved to be inherited by the son, for at the age of 19 years he relinquished his appointments in the Government service, to accept a position on the station of Hammersley and Co., in the Irwin River district. The settlements, which was stocked with a few thousand cattle and seven or eight thousand sheep, was in a practically isolated position, the only visitors being wandering tribes of blacks. The painful experiences which so many pioneers endured through the native interference were, however, not shared by the late Mr. Moore, who gained their friendship by kindly though firm treatment. That his confidence in the blacks was not misplaced is shown by the fact that during the time he was on the station he opened up by trips of exploration without the slightest molestation a great area of new country. His success among stock soon brought him reward, for, although very young, he was entrusted with the management of the property. While occupying this position he joined, by invitation, an exploring party organised to open up country in the Gascoyne. With this party, which consisted of Mr. F. T. Gregory as leader, and Messrs. Roe, C. Nairne, and a Government chainer and a native, the late Mr. Moore did some splendid pioneering work. The expedition occupied five months, and the following year the deceased accompanied by only two others penetrated into the country leading to the Murchison. Stock at that time was being driven a distance of 256 miles to Perth, and the prices ruling at that time were much lower than present day rates. In 1862 the deceased decided to settle in Fremantle, and, resigning his position as station manager, commenced business as a merchant at the Port. The keen business instincts which enabled

Page 4 of 16 Sunday, March 22, 2020 3:43:11 PM Generation 2 (cont.) business as a merchant at the Port. The keen business instincts which enabled him to conduct so satisfactorily the affairs of his employers while managing their property in the country, were even of greater value in the more varied business in which he embarked-and he prospered. While still giving attention to other matters the late Mr. Moore carried on his business as a merchant at Fremantle until 1900, when it was taken over by Mr. P. F. Moore. The deceased was in his day one of the most prominent members of the local Chamber of Commerce, occupying the position of president for 10 years. For 9 years he was a director of the W.A. Bank, and for a considerable period was on the local board of directors of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, and also on the board of advice of Dalgety and Co. Mr. Moore had large pastoral properties, including the Cheriton Estate, sold some time ago to Messrs. Harper and Wedge, and Milledon. In 1870 the late Mr. Moore was a member of the first elective Legislature, representing Fremantle. After remaining in the House for three years, his duties in the commercial world, he found, gave him an insufficiency of spare time for politics, and he retired. In 1890 he was appointed a nominee member of the Legislative Council under Responsible Government, and occupied a seat in the Upper House. The de-ceased, too, was manager of one of the first timber stations established in Western Australia at Quindalup; in the Busselton district. He was also largely interested in the pearling industry on the Nor'-West coastline and ever had quite a repertoire of fascinating tales to relate regarding this pursuit. On one occasion he secured one pearl, which, on sending to London, he received in return a draft for £1,500. He was engaged in pearl fishing at Sharks Bay from 1877 to 1887. The pearl shell then being recovered was of a smaller size than that now being obtained, but a ready market was secured for it in France, several hundred tons being shipped monthly to the port of Havre. The deceased, it is stated, also erected the first roller flour mill in this State, building the Phoenix mill in Essex street, Fremantle, on the site of an old stone milling plant which had been destroyed by fire. To mourn his death, the deceased leaves a wife, two brothers-Frederick Henry Moore, of Sydney and Samuel Fortescue Moore, of Claremont and Dongarra, a sister -Mrs. Charles Wittenoom, of Adelaide-terrace, Perth, five sons and nine daughters. The respect in which the late Mr. W. D. Moore was held by the people of this State was evidenced by the large number of friends who followed his remains to their last resting-place on Saturday.

Moore writes to his parents:- I am as well as can be expected under the circumstances. Since -writing last night tell you ,that I have been through some terrible, experiences. I, with others of the 11th Battalion, 3rd Brigade, which landed on that eventful morning before the sun arose on the 25th of April. We landed in small, boats from the man o'war and then the fun began. I do not know how to describe the sight it was an inferno. When landed we chased the Terrible Turk, and

Page 9 of 16 Sunday, March 22, 2020 3:43:11 PM Generation 2 (cont.) describe the sight it was an inferno. When landed we chased the Terrible Turk, and we (about 25 to 3()) .were cut off for three days, and then we had to fight ourselves back to our lines. I was among the first hundred that landed, and many and many never landed at all. Poor chaps ! their experience was short indeed, but I suppose you have heard all about the landing, so I will not weary you it is too terrible to write about. I shall never forget when we were cutting our way back. Our poor chaps were mowed down in hundreds- like mowing down grass, but they never caught 'Gassy (this is my 'nickname' in Bunbury). It was terrible to hear the high explosive and shrapnel bursting about us, the noise was - well, I can't find any word to suit it. It has been the means of our men getting revenge and the Turks run like mad when they see the shining steel after them. I have not stuck a Turk yet- but very near. I have sent plenty of lead after them and some got home. I have been in the trenches five weeks and so it is now time that I took a ticket for a relieve, but I might mention that our forces are trying to capture a large hill, and when it is captured it will be all up with Turkey. Our fleet is bombarding it, and we have 250 of our guns in all having a smack at it, and I hope it will he captured soon, it is the key of the Dardanelles. I must tell you that I have been deaf in both ears and blind in one eye and they are sending me back in the Hospital ship Gascon to be treated at Egypt. They would not let me stop. I was disappointed. I wanted to be there at the capture of the Dardanelles and Constantinople, but I may yet. The ship arrived at Alexandria. I was then transferred to Cairo and then sent to one of the Sultan's palaces about 20 miles out of Cairo. They treat us like princes. The doctors are to be commended for their efforts, and the nurses deserve a special medal for their untiring energies. Too much praise cannot be given them...... I have been here two weeks. The doctor, said, that my eyes will get much1 better and one of my ears will do likewise, but the other one has a hole through the drum, of the ear, so I do not know what they will do with me. They say that we might be wanted to guard the Suez Canal. We will then be able to have a smack at them. I am getting quite bloodthirsty after watching our mates get cut up so. I think I have told you enough for the present, so remember me to all enquiring friends in Bunbury, and thank those who sent the '"Southern Times", ''Daily News" and "West Australian" papers.

West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Monday 29 November 1915, page 7 THE LATE ACTING-SERGEANT MOORE. The following is an extract from a letter written by Captain J. Bentley, A.M.C., 10th Western Australian Light Horse, to a sister of the late Acting Sergeant R. J. Moore, of the Western Australian Expeditionary Force:- "As you know, I have been friendly with Reg for years, the poor fellow was killed on Russell's Top, which is part of Walker's Ridge, on the morning of August 7, at about 5 o'clock. It happened in a charge on the Turkish trenches in which our regiment lost some of its very best officers and men. He was killed by either machine gun or rifle fire, and died immediately. Reg. was popular with everyone and his loss is severely felt. He had been granted a commission, a day after his sad death, in the 29th Division, which shows what was thought of his fighting qualities."
