1933 --1937+

Charlotte Brehm attended the University of Arizona from 1933 to 1937. Most of the time she lived at Gamma Phi Beta house. Charlotte was from Bisbee where her fa- ther owned Brehm’s Jewelry, and mother was famous for her African Violets. They had lived in Bisbee since 1921. Charlotte met Clinton Eugene Ring in 1934. Clinton spent a lot of time around the Gamma Phi House before, after and between dates. He became good friends with many of the girls. Charlotte’s roommate, Pauline (Hickey) Hickcox, from Inspiration, remained there close friend as Pauline Bayless, wife of Bob Bayless into the 1990’s while they lived in Phoenix. Clinton and Char- lotte were married June 11, 1938 in Bisbee.

Gamma Phi Beta

If you ask any woman in Gamma Phi Beta to describe their chapter in one word it would be variety! This diverse group of women are well aware of what it means to achieve the highest type of excellence, and it shows. Gamma Phi Beta boasts a great scholarship pro- gram, and members that are active in so many areas of Greek Life as well as in outside communities, and organizations. This group of tightly bonded individuals is also very proud of the only owned and operated philanthropy, Camp Gamma Phi at Sechelt. On top of all this hard work and achievements, the Gamma Phi’s know how to have a good time. It is because of all this, that Gamma Phi Beta memories and friendships do last a lifetime.

There was a slight argu- ment—in fact the best one so far. As to the details—well, I’ll skip that. Thursday morning was laundry day. In the afternoon we went to the 5th avenue theatre—beautiful place—saw Marion Davis in “Hearts Divided.” Lousy-had dinner a Aurora café—splurged because we were half starved—Friday was “get beautiful” day. In afternoon went to TO tea at lovely estates. Then had dinner at the Broadmore Hotel. Met Charlotte White, Millicent Hoffman & all the big officials—perfect time. Charlotte had dinner at the Diary 1934 by Charlotte A. Brehm — My American Trip

Edward Meany Hotel with Elizabeth & Gordon Spendlove. They saw “The Trial of Mrs. Ames” at the Orpheum theatre. Sat. morning at 6:30, Troop 7 was up & ready for that trip to Europe. At 9 the car was on & so were we. We met the Stanford girls & with Johnnie & Dedee, we made a large group. We sat out on the deck in back & talked & talked. Had luncheon on the ship—great fun—every time we took a bite, the ship moved. Arrived at Victoria at 12:30. We could see the Empress right away—had a lovely crescent moon hanging over the main entrance—right across from the empress was the Parliament build- ing big grey thing with green domes. It really was the nuts. The boat took us practically to the front door. We stood in line & paid that odd $35. Felt a little empty after that. Then up to the room with Jap bellboy carrying suitcases. Rooms are perfect—huge—nice John—twin beds—writing desk—over stuffed furniture & of course that writing paper that we’ve been talking about every since we left. Skipped a tea—went to dinner at 7 which didn’t begin till 7:30. More girls & more noise. Flags given as _____ Perfect dinner went to Alaskan party—dressed Hickie up in cowboy boats, shirt, loud shirt, hel- met, & hideous teeth you remember those teeth. Of course we took the prize—although modest in front of the others, we gave a loud cheer for Alpha Epsilon when we were in our rooms—Midnight Service— On Sunday at 11 we went to services at Victoria Cathedral Church of England. Dean (?) was very Eng- lish—service was dedicated to TO’s—very nice—dinner & then the Stanford girls & us piled into a bus—an open air job—a great big thing. The driver was Archie—he was lovely—ears hanging out of cap—typically English—a cut-up. He at first tried to talk thru a mike as we passed interesting places. Alpha Epsilon cheered too much so he stopped. At the Burchard gardens we followed him while he lec- tured—gorgeous gardens—back into bus—wouldn’t make hill so we backed up—more fun—stopped at country village & bought refreshments—bus stopped– we had to change—we hated leaving Archie, but we took a picture of him & went bravely on. At 6:30 we had high tea. It was jolly well fine—then over to the Theater of Crystal Garden where Mrs. Finley lead in Memorial services—very impressive & beau- tiful. Then model initiation—nice but Alpha Epsilon knows how to make it much more effective. Mon- day began the days of business meetings. One at 9:30 & another at 2:00. Then Mac went to an Indian dinner here which was perfect—totem poles given as favors—Stanford girls & rest of Arizona girls went to dinner at Stephenson’s & to see Francis Leduer in “One Rainy Afternoon.” Lousy. Back to hotel where we gathered in room 544-Betta Brock’s & Katie Jenning’s & indulged in a heated discussion con- cerning scholarship. They were many arguments & slight differences of opinion. However, in the end, all agreed & all was peaceful!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tuesday afternoon we went to a business meeting & then to a Hi-Jinx dinner. Girls dressed up like clowns came in & ran up & down dinning hall—dinner was very informal—kept saying “We want Grand Council” until they stood up—this went on until even the chef was called. Then to the Crystal theatre where we saw Camp pictures & stunts of different houses—they were real funny—Alpha Epsilon remained seated on front row—Ice cream cones were handed out by the clowns—I didn’t get one—did you? Wednesday morning we again attended meeting on masse. This was a special meeting for actives & was one of the better ones—Wed. afternoon, Mac Slept-Billie, Dolly & Muggs went to meeting where officers were elected. Hickie & I went shopping for souvenirs all over Victoria. As it was Dominion day, the stores were closed. We had a spot of tea & came back. Marched into dinner by chapters—we sat among the Texas & Canadian girls. Ugh! Monkey fur. Cute menus, dar- ling flower pots with carnations in them—toasts given to King, Grand Council, Girls, & Alums—up to Hickies room where we had a province meeting & then stayed there for a bull session. Hickie & her teeth performed. Thursday morning we slept late—packed-lunch with cabinet members _____ checked out— Dolly, Fugua, & Muggs shopped. Hickie, Ruth & Scottish & I walked around town & had tea again at the Poodle Dog—back to hotel & on boat at 5 o’clock. Farewell songs given by Yacht club men of the re- gatta—swell trip back—arrived Seattle nine o’clock—had all bags in Emma so did not have to wait— went to Sorrento Hotel but finally went to the “love nest” again. Fireworks kept us awake but there is nothing like the “love—nest”– had breakfast at “The Hub again—don’t like to leave her food, it’s good— checked bags—on to green fields—out Acuara (?)—over bridge—see skyscrapers of city center—out & on river—Tacoma—didn’t take road into city but road to the left—factory district—old looking build- ings—huge green trees—bridge—eating places—little stores on to state capital—lovely green park with pine trees— cloudy weather—definitely this is the nuts—real cool—passed F. Williams River—Raymond—lumber companies—carnival—lunch in beer joint—raining pitchforks—right on ocean—so much ran we can’t see very far out—pine forest—mist coming out of mts. Took ferry to As- toria to Oregon—ferry was a small one—we stayed right out on edge of ferry—Columbia River—more fun—Astoria is pretty little city—cold—big bridge—Seaside right on ocean again—Glee club—deeper Diary 1934 by Charlotte A. Brehm — My American Trip wooded glens - Oregon is the prettiest State in which we have visited. It is beautiful—sharp curves- Wheeler-Twin Rocks—island-Garibaldi-Miami River—Talanweak (?) Finally got a woman to stop & her husband helped pump up the tire. Had it fixed at a little service station where woman was so proud of such lovely six girls you didn’t smoke—on to Santa Rosa where we could find no accommodations—not even hotel rooms—on to Petaluma where we could find none—gave up & started our second night of driving without sleep. Drive slowly—______at Newport—stopped at little place for coffee.
