  • Trust Hodgson to Give a Little Bit More
Trust Hodgson to Give a Little Bit more Roger Hodgson Photograph by : CALGARY HERALD, CANWEST NEWS SERVICE Eric Volmers, Calgary Herald; CanWest News Service Published: Wednesday, July 19, 2006 Roger Hodgson seems an odd choice to take on the role of a hardened, reality-TV taskmaster overseeing a gaggle of young Canadian Idol hopefuls. But the soft-spoken and willowy singer-songwriter, who is best known for applying his otherworldly falsetto to a string of progressive pop hits in the 1970s and '80s with his band Supertramp, seems genuinely excited that producers have asked him to be an official mentor on the show. Come August, the former Supertramp frontman, who was 19 when the band's first album was released in 1969, will be shepherding Idol's surviving singers through some of Supertramp's most beloved songs. And the near legendary songwriter admits he is curious to see how the young singers negotiate some of the trickier vocal gymnastics required to master tunes like Dreamer and Take the Long Way Home. "It will be interesting to find contestants who can sing in my register," Hodgson said. "It will be something different for me." Hodgson's appearance on Canadian Idol is another reminder of the long-term relationship the British-born musician has had with this country. Although Hodgson has lived in California since the 1980s, he says Canada's long-standing devotion to Supertramp has always made it seem like a second home. At one time, it was estimated that one in every 20 Canadians owned the band's Breakfast in America and Crime of the Century albums.

We also enjoyed views of a pair of Rufous-naped Wrens, a vocal Rufous-browed Peppershrike, and the unmistakable Lesson’s Motmot. After breakfast, we took the road to Cartago where a little productive grassland allowed views of a few birds. Then we ascended the Pan-American Highway and, after reaching a higher elevation, we noticed a sudden change in vegetation and humidity; we had entered the cloud forest. A wonderful lunch was accompanied by excellent views of the territorial Fiery-throated Hummingbird and other allies including Talamanca and Volcano hummingbirds. Continuing our birding activities after lunch, we decided to take our chances exloring the highlands, to the antenna road. Reaching the pre-paramo is always a challenge because the weather can change dramatically in a few minutes. But, despite the wind and the humidity, we enjoyed very close views of Volcano Junco. Later, a Peg-billed Finch showed up for seconds, and for a grand finale we had a striking encounter with the Timberline Wren.

  • The Leisure Seeker
THE LEISURE SEEKER Written by Stephen Amidon Francesca Archibugi Francesco Piccolo Paolo Virzì Scene 1 Page 1. 1 EXT. PICK-UP, MOVING THROUGH A BOSTON SUBURB - DAY 1 A car stereo plays a song from the 1980s... ‘IT’S RAINING AGAIN’ BY SUPERTRAMP (FOLLOWED BY COMMENTARY FROM THE D.J., WHO SAYS THAT HE’LL SOON BE SPEAKING WITH THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE FROM THE FOURTH DISTRICT OF MASSACHUSETTS) A perfectly-restored Ford pick-up with some vintage objects in the bed drives slowly along a street lined with modest but gracious two-storey houses. The only people passing by at this time of day are a group of elderly power-walkers, swinging tiny weights. The pick-up stops in front of a lawn that is badly in need of a trim. The radio cuts off and WILL emerges. He’s forty-five; average-looking. He pulls a shoulder bag and then two stuffed Whole Foods shopping bags from the passenger seat. When he kicks the truck’s door shut we see a sign: “SECOND HAND - VINTAGE SHOPPING ONLINE www.secondhand.com” 2 INT./EXT. ELLA’S AND JOHN’S HOUSE - DAY 2 Will enters through the kitchen door without knocking. He puts down the bags and announces his presence with forced good cheer: WILL Mom? It’s me! You ready? Jane’ll be here any minute. I made a cake for Dad, hazelnut and carrot. No butter or sugar, so you can have a slice! No answer. Will starts to explore various rooms. WILL (CONT’D) Where are you guys? It’s a cozy, slightly messy house.
