Transferring the pattern

There are several methods of transferring an embroidery pattern.

I used the one, which is tought at the Royal School of (London), which is explained in Jacqui Mc Donald’s book „“Crewelwork“. There are also youtube videos about it by Sarah Homfray.

It is called the „prick and pounce“ method.

Stitches

The stitches I used are only suggestions. Feel free to use whatever stitches you like. It is good to find a balance between closed and open stitches.

I used the following reference book about Crewel stitches:

Jacqui Mc Donald: „Crewelwork“. She explains everything you need to know about crewel embroidery in depth.

Youtube: Sarah Homfray: Excellent videos about most of the crewel embroidery stitches.

Additional notes

I stitched this design during my certificate course at the Royal School of Needlework. During this course you are tought four embroidery techniques and have to embroider four embroidery samples, which will then be assessed by the school. If you are interested in learning to embroider like a professional, then I would highly recommend enrolling in their classes. You won’t regret it!

This is the first embroidery design I publish. It’s not perfect at all, I merely would like to share the design, which is entirely developed and drawn by myself. I got inspiration of traditional jacobean crewel work at pinterest, where I made a pinboard dedicated to crewel work. If you’re interested, go to: www. Pinterest com/Alexatschan. Please note, that there may be copy rights on the pictures I saved. The idea is to get inspiration and then draw your own design.

I’ve done my best to give correct information about this crewel embroidery design, but can’t guarantee the success of your embroidery. I’m not a professional embroiderer at all, but am still at the beginning of my journey.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’ll do my best to help you or tell you, where you can find help.

Copyright

Please enjoy this pattern for your personal use only. This design is not to be used professionally or resold without my permission.

Have fun

I hope you enjoy to stitch this design!

Get creative, and make it your own by add your own details and choose whatever colors you like. You can also mix different types of embroidery floss, such as crewel wool and stranded cotton. You can also add beads to your work to give it extra sparkle.

I would be very happy if you shared your progress on instagram wiht the hashtag #alexasdreambird. It would be great to see many colorful dreambirds popping up around instagram and make our lives more colorful and joyful!

Happy stitching,

Alexa
