The IPC is a specialised surgical tool that helps remove soft and hard tissue, and bone during surgery in a less painful and less invasive way. Surgeons can connect multiple hand tools at one time, control the speed and pressure during wound irrigation, and can easily navigate a large touchscreen menu. “Over the past two years, as a result of population increases in the area, there has been a tripling in the number of children under 18 having ENT surgery at Canterbury Hospital including removing tonsils and/or adenoids and the insertion of grommets,” said Sue Baker, Community Participation & Volunteer Manager at Canterbury Hospital. “This growth has put pressure on our service delivery and the funding available for us to deliver these services. This new equipment will improve the surgical experience for 25 people every week who have ENT surgery and reduce their overall recovery time.” Paul Dunn, Chairman of Canterbury League Club said: “Our Associate Professor Daniel Novakovic from Canterbury Hospital’s long-standing partnership with Canterbury Hospital saw us Ear, Nose and Throat Department with the new surgical tool commit $67,000 in 2020 – a significant sum that went towards purchasing surgical tools, umbrella sunshades, and refitting their maternity ward with a baby bathing room and kitchen. The hospital plays a vital role in our community so we are proud to help where we can.” VALE KEN McCAFFERY The Club pays tribute to former Canterbury League Club Secretary/Manager, Ken McCaffery who passed away on 6 February 2021, aged 91 years. During his 10 years at Canterbury, from 1969 until 1980, Ken was responsible for bringing top Australian and international artists and shows to the club. He also introduced a quality dining room and mixed lounge as part of club renovations; and opened up club membership to women. A talented rugby league player, McCaffery played for Easts, represented Queensland in 17 interstate games from 1952, and was selected for the Kangaroo tour in 1953. He also featured in Australia’s 1957 Rugby League World Cup victory against Great Britain. Former director of the club, Gary McIntyre, said “I was fortunate to be on the board during the 10 years that Ken was at the club. He was a wonderful man, very popular in the club and highly respected throughout the club industry.” “Canterbury extends its deepest sympathies to the McCaffery family and we wish them peace and comfort. Thank you to Ken for his decade of service to the Club – our sincerest condolences,” said Paul Dunn, Chairman of Canterbury League Club. AUSTRALIA AND THE PACIFIC: THE AMBIVALENT PLACE OF PACIFIC PEOPLES WITHIN CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIA Scott William Mackay, BA (Hons), BSc July 2018 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Australian Indigenous Studies Program School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne 0000-0002-5889 – Abstract – My thesis examines the places (real and symbolic) accorded to Pacific peoples within the historical production of an Australian nation and in the imaginary of Australian nationalism. It demonstrates how these places reflect and inform the ways in which Australia engages with the Pacific region, and the extent to which Australia considers itself a part of or apart from the Pacific. While acknowledging the important historical and contemporary differences between the New Zealand and Australian contexts, I deploy theoretical concepts and methods developed within the established field of New Zealand- centred Pacific Studies to identify and analyse what is occurring in the much less studied Australian-Pacific context. In contrast to official Australian discourse, the experiences of Pacific people in Australia are differentiated from those of other migrant communities because of: first, Australia’s colonial and neo-colonial histories of control over Pacific land and people; and second, Pacific peoples' important and unique kinships with Aboriginal Australians. Crucially the thesis emphasises the significant diversity (both cultural and national) of the Pacific experience in Australia. My argument is advanced first by a historicisation of Australia’s formal engagements with Pacific people, detailing intersecting narratives of their migration to Australia and Australia’s colonial and neo- colonial engagements within the Pacific region.

  • RUGBY LEAGUE and the LAW CHRIS DAVIES* Abstract Rugby
RUGBY LEAGUE AND THE LAW CHRIS DAVIES* Abstract Rugby league has been played in Australia for over a hundred years. While some cases originate from when the sport was semi-professional, the rise of professional leagues over the last two decades has also seen an increase in the involvement of the law. It is suggested that rugby league has been involved in more litigation than any other sport in Australia, with there being legal cases in areas such as competition law, restraint of trade, torts, criminal law and copyright. It is also suggested that some of these cases could have been avoided with better governance and administration. The draft system once implemented by rugby league, for example, was poorly designed and inevitably successfully challenged. However, other cases could have happened in a number of other sports and, at other times, other sports were actually involved in the litigation. Thus, there are a number of reasons why rugby league has experienced more litigation than other Australian sports. I INTRODUCTION The North Queensland Cowboys’ win in the 2015 National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Final was the culmination of over twenty years participation in a national competition, and represented the club’s first ever premiership. For South Sydney, meanwhile, the 2014 Premiership was its first in over forty years, the length of time this represented being indicated by the fact its previous premiership, in 1971, had been won in a competition organised by the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWLR). This competition, however, was not even the precursor of the NRL, Australia’s main rugby league competition having been run by the Australian Rugby League (ARL) in between those of the NSWRL and NRL.
