428 REVISED SYSTEM OF GUNNERY TRAINING Gunnery Training in the Royal Navy has been centra lised In HMS EXCELLENT and HMS CAMBRiDGE. There will be no further gunnery training for Royal Marines at the Royal Naval Gunnery School, Chatham. 2. All Gunnery Instructors and First Class r:ltes will in future be trained In HMS EXCELLEl\'T. 3. The Collowing instructions relate to training In HMS CAMBRIDGE. Provision of nIen for Tralni11g 4. The Co:nma:ldant or th e Gunnery School will act as the link between the Director of Pay and Records and the Captains, HMS EXCELLENT and HMS CAMBRIDGE. in the provision of men for gunnery training. 5. The Commandant of the Gunnery School Is responsible for Informing the Commanding Officer, RM Barracks, P lymouth. of the dates of the Gunnery courses between which a~commodation wiII be required. Instruction 6. GA2, QA2, MG(Q) and !\lG(C) Courses, Royal Marines will be included in Noval ratings' classes a nd a RM Gunnery Instructor will not be required, 7. Initial Gunnery Courses. Separate classes of between 10 - 15 other ranks will be formed. 'lllld an ins'ru~tor will be loaned to HMS CAMBRIDGE by the Corps Gunnery School for the dur:ltjon of the ~:lurse (3 weeks). Part 4: Conclusions and Recommendations & Appendices
Twentieth Century Naval Dockyards Devonport and Portsmouth: Characterisation Report PART FOUR CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The final focus of this report is to develop the local, national and international contexts of the two dockyards to highlight specific areas of future research. Future discussion of Devonport and Portsmouth as distinct designed landscapes would coherently organise the many strands identified in this report. The Museum of London Archaeology Portsmouth Harbour Hinterland Project carried out for Heritage England (2015) is a promising step in this direction. It is emphasised that this study is just a start. By delivering the aim and objectives, it has indicated areas of further fruitful research. Project aim: to characterise the development of the active naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth, and the facilities within the dockyard boundaries at their maximum extent during the twentieth century, through library, archival and field surveys, presented and analysed in a published report, with a database of documentary and building reports. This has been delivered through Parts 1-4 and Appendices 2-4. Project objectives 1 To provide an overview of the twentieth century development of English naval dockyards, related to historical precedent, national foreign policy and naval strategy. 2 To address the main chronological development phases to accommodate new types of vessels and technologies of the naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth. 3 To identify the major twentieth century naval technological revolutions which affected British naval dockyards. 4 To relate the main chronological phases to topographic development of the yards and changing technological and strategic needs, and identify other significant factors. 5 To distinguish which buildings are typical of the twentieth century naval dockyards and/or of unique interest. -

In the main, these logs were completed by the Officer of the Watch (OOW) when the ship was at sea and by the Quartermaster (QM) when the ship was in harbour. Each log, representing one calendar month, was completed in PENCIL, with no erasure allowed. Any errors were crossed out and the correct data entered, and each log was signed and dated by the Captain on a weekly basis. There does not appear to be any strict rule regarding what goes in the logs. Some OOWs were diligent in completing the logs, some were not. The same is true of entries made by the QM. Quite a few log entries have NOT been transcribed. When at sea, there are numerous entries regarding changes of course eg.”a/c to avoid fishing vessels” and in harbour, many references to the Guard Boat or MOD Police patrols, or ships passing. As is the way of things, many entries are abbreviated, have acronyms or are accepted Naval terms or expressions and these are shown ‘as is’. Ships names are shown in upper case eg. JUPITER or RFA OLMEDA. Shore Establishments are styled as follows: HMS Mercury Any data show in italics is information added to clarify or question the log entries, and entries shown in quotes are verbatim. -

Changes to UK Defence Statistics (UKDS) this year include a new section on Defence Inflation and an expanded International Defence section in Chapter 1, the restructuring of the Armed Forces Personnel section in Chapter 2, and a new section on Amputations in Chapter 3. UK Defence Statistics (UKDS) is a National Statistics publication, produced according to the standards of the Official Statistics Code of Practice. However some of the tables in UKDS do not have National Statistics status – some are produced by areas outside of the scope of the Government Statistical Service; some do not yet meet all the quality standards of the Official Statistics Code of Practice; and others have not gone through the required assessment process to be classed as National Statistics. All such tables are clearly marked with explanatory notes. This year UKDS is once again being issued as a web document only, due to financial constraints within the Ministry of Defence. Each table and chapter is available in pdf format which is suitable for printing. There is also a pdf version of the entire publication, and of the UKDS factsheet. We have ceased publication of the UKDS pocket cards this year, since they are of limited value in electronic format. -

Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 - 2018 Part 4: Europe & Canada Peter Lobner July 2018 1 Foreword In 2015, I compiled the first edition of this resource document to support a presentation I made in August 2015 to The Lyncean Group of San Diego (www.lynceans.org) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the world’s first “underway on nuclear power” by USS Nautilus on 17 January 1955. That presentation to the Lyncean Group, “60 years of Marine Nuclear Power: 1955 – 2015,” was my attempt to tell a complex story, starting from the early origins of the US Navy’s interest in marine nuclear propulsion in 1939, resetting the clock on 17 January 1955 with USS Nautilus’ historic first voyage, and then tracing the development and exploitation of marine nuclear power over the next 60 years in a remarkable variety of military and civilian vessels created by eight nations. In July 2018, I finished a complete update of the resource document and changed the title to, “Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 – 2018.” What you have here is Part 4: Europe & Canada. Surg/Cdr [1.1.51] "For great bravery and devotion to duty. For great gallantry, daring and skill in the attack on the German Naval Base at St. Nazaire." HMS Fitzroy (J03 - Hunt Class Minesweeper) was sunk on 27 May 1942 by a mine 40 miles north-east of Great Yarmouth in position 52.39N, 2.46E. It was most likely sunk by a British mine! It had been commissioned on 01 July 1919. -
H.M.S. Leander
Leander Class Frigate H.M.S. LEANDER 1972 - 1989 1/350 Scale The Type 12 (Improved) or Leander Class Frigates that were introduced into Royal Navy service from the early 1960’s, were the most numerous of any of the classes of ships of the modern era. The design of the Leander class was based on the earlier Whitby and Rothesay class Type 12 hull, which had already proved it’s excellent sea keeping qualities, but had a simplified superstructure layout which included a built in helicopter hangar. The hull was built up flush with the main deck at the stern, which gave a better protected area for the variable depth sonar installation as well as improved deck space around the mortar well . The Leander class Frigates were split into three batches and were built between 1959 and 1973. The first batch of 10 was fitted with Y100 machinery the second batch of 6 having the upgraded Y136 machinery fitted. The third batch of 10 ships were known as the Broad Beam Leander’s and had a hull that was wider by 2 feet to accommodate the Y160 machinery fit. HMS Leander, was the name ship of the first batch of the Leander class and was laid down at Harland and Wolff of Belfast on 10th April 1959.Originally intended to be a Rothesay Class Frigate to name HMS Weymouth the plans were changed for her completion as a new Leander class ship. She was launched on 28th June 1961 and commissioned into service on 27th March 1963. Her early years between 1963 and 1970 were spent in her original fit as a general purpose frigate with the twin 4.5” Mk6 gun turret mounted on the fore deck. -

Under Fire: The Falklands War and the Revival of Naval Gunfire Support I have always placed a high priority on exercising NGS. All my ships have had the capacity & I made sure we knew how to use it. NGS became a lower priority for the Naval Staff & new construction planned had no gun. Op [Operation] Corporate changed all that thinking. Captain Michael Barrow1 The reputation of naval gunfire support (NGS) has waxed and waned since the initial development of the capability. At times, NGS has been considered to have been of supreme importance. At others, it has been viewed as worthless. By the end of the 1970s, there was burgeoning opinion in some circles that NGS had become obsolete. Operation Corporate – the Falklands War – demonstrated that reports of the demise of NGS had been greatly exaggerated. NGS played a prominent role during Operation Corporate, but it was just one of a multitude of capabilities. As John Ballard put it: ‘The British...integrated nearly every tool in the kit bag to mount their operation rapidly and win at the knife’s edge of culmination.’2 There can be no doubt that the destructive mix of capabilities utilised by British forces was crucial to the success of Operation Corporate. However, due to the inevitable limits of operating so far from home, NGS was often required to redress deficiencies in other fire support capabilities.
