  • Moving Forward at the Detroit Historical Society!
1 WINTER 2018 Moving Forward at the Detroit Historical Society! At the Detroit Historical Society, 2017 has been a time of transformation. Three years of work on Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward came to fruition this year, and the efforts that went into it led us to adopt a new model for engaging the public in creating programming and exhibitions in our museums. Our work is stronger for it, as evidenced by positive reviews, awards and steady increases in visitor numbers driven by the Detroit 67: Perspectives exhibition. Most importantly, however, our organization changed from the inside out. Our model for engagement, Engage, Refect, Act (ERA), incorporates a three-step process for commencing work on new programs and exhibitions at our museums: engage the community, refect on what we learn and inspire visitors to action based on the relevance of history to today. We are committed to applying this model internally and externally as we work to tell Detroit’s stories and why they matter. That means that we are engaging the talents of our staff across departments to strengthen and streamline our work in the same way that we are engaging the public and other cultural institutions to inform upcoming programs and exhibits. In October, the Detroit Historical Society and our partners at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History were honored with the Michigan Museum Association’s 2017 Peninsulas Prize in recognition of our unique collaboration on the Detroit 67 project. This was wonderful evidence of the transformational power of the ERA model.

A MESSAGE FROM The Governor Welcome! It is my great honor to join Arizona Citizens for the Arts and the Arizona Commission on the Arts in this wonderful celebration -- this year in a truly fitting setting that carries important historical and cultural significance. Arizona’s arts and culture community reflects the creative diversity and remarkable talents of the people who comprise one of our state’s great treasures. For 29 years, the Governor’s Arts Awards have recognized its outstanding achievements and contributions to our state’s economic vitality and quality of life. Particularly during these very difficult economic times, arts and culture provide us the opportunity to be inspired by what Arizonans have to offer across our broad and beautiful state, to be engaged and swept up in the arts experience and to recharge and refocus on what makes Arizona unique. Please allow me to offer my personal congratulations to all of the honorees and nominees being recognized this evening, and thank each of you for joining us. Sincerely, Janice K. • 04 Part Two Chapter 4-5 Everett
PART TWO. "So what are you doing now?" "Well the school of course." "You mean youre still there?" "Well of course. I will always be there as long as there are students." (Jacques Lecoq, in a letter to alumni, 1998). 79 CHAPTER FOUR INTRODUCTION TO PART TWO. The preceding chapters have been principally concerned with detailing the research matrix which has served as a means of mapping the influence of the Lecoq school on Australian theatre. I have attempted to situate the research process in a particular theoretical context, adopting Alun Munslow's concept of `deconstructionise history as a model. The terms `diaspora' and 'leavening' have been deployed as metaphorical frameworks for engaging with the operations of the word 'influence' as it relates specifically to the present study. An interpretive framework has been constructed using four key elements or features of the Lecoq pedagogy which have functioned as reference points in terms of data collection, analysis and interpretation. These are: creation of original performance material; use of improvisation; a movement-based approach to performance; use of a repertoire of performance styles. These elements or `mapping co-ordinates' have been used as focal points during the interviewing process and have served as reference points for analysis of the interview material and organisation of the narrative presentation. The remainder of the thesis constitutes the narrative interpretation of the primary and secondary source material. This chapter aims to provide a general overview of, and introduction to the research findings. I will firstly outline a demographic profile of Lecoq alumni in Australia. Secondly I will situate the work of alumni, and the influence of their work on Australian theatre within a broader socio-cultural, historical context.
