It's located in the west-central part of the city along the banks of the meeting Red Cedar River. It includes Malcolm X street, a living historical marker celebrating the leader who is native to Lansing. Downtown Lansing is primarily home to 's state government and three colleges, and also contains sports facilities, museums, entertainment and retail, and a growing residential population, with close proximity to Michigan State University.

This neighborhood includes many historical homes and significant riverfront access, including boat launches and a handicap accessible kayak launch. There is a property at the corner of River Street and Hillsdale which has served as an outdoor bar/canoe livery for some time which is now closed and for sale. With the resurgence of residents into the southern portion of downtown and into this neighborhood (Cherry Hill) it could be a great opportunity. Another famous Lansing son, Earvin “Magic” Johnson grew up on the western edge of this neighborhood and honed his basketball skills at St. Joseph Park.

Lansing Community College with an enrollment of approximately 22,000 students is on the north end of downtown. Cooley Law School is located just south of the capitol. The Lansing campus of , a private, non-profit university, is located along East Allegan Avenue two blocks east of the capitol. Downtown is one of two hubs for the Capital Area Transportation Authority. Lansing City Hall sits at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and Capitol Avenue across the street from the , which is the seat of the state government. The headquarters and main library of the Capital Area District Library along with Library of Michigan & Historical Center, which includes the Archives of Michigan and State Law Library are also in the district. One of the largest law libraries in the country, Thomas E. Brennan Law Library, a part of Cooley Law School, sits at the corner of Kalamazoo and Washington Square in the central business district.
