Como sus padres tenian grandes dificultades econ6micas, Storni tuvo que trabajar de adolescence para ayudar a la familia. Consigui6 su primer puesto de maestra en una escuela elemental en Rosario y, despues de una relaci6n amorosa con un hombre casado, se fue a Buenos Aires en 191 I.Allf naci6, el afio siguiente, su hijo Alejandro, a quien Storni cuidaria sola. Su primer libro apareci6 en 1916, pero en esa epoca la poeta tenia problemas econ6micos. Amado Nervo, el gran poeta mexicano, public6 algunos de los poemas de Storni en la revista Mundo Argentino, lo que represent6 un reconocimiento importance para ella. En I 920, su Ii bro Languidez gan6 el Primer Premio Municipal de Poesfa y el Segundo Premio Nacional de Literatura. Storni intervino en la creaci6n de la Sociedad Argentina de Escritores y en dos viajes a Espana, uno durance 1928 y el otro en 1931, conoci6 a otras escritoras. Despues de ocupar varios puestos de profesora, obtuvo dos catedras en 1923 y 1926, una de "Lectura y declamaci6n" y otra en el conservatorio de Musica y Declamaci6n, que dictarfa hasta su muerte. Asisti6 a una conferencia en Montevideo en 1938 con Gabriela Mistral y Juana de lbarbourou, dos poetas suramericanas muy conocidas. Fue operada de un cancer de seno en 1935, que reapareci6 tres afios mas tarde. La poeta se suicide en el Mar del Plata el 25 de octubre de 1938, un afio despues del suicidio de su gran amigo Horacio Quiroga. La poesia de Storni La trayectoria poetica de Storni se divide en dos etapas, una temprana con poemas publicados entre 1916 y _1925; dentro de estos El du lee dano (1918), lrremediab/emente ( I 919) ( de los cuales se extraen los poemas a continuaci6n), y Languidez (1920) contienen sus poemas mas fuertes. En esta epoca, su estilo es generalmente de un lirismo subjetivo con rasgos del romanticismo y modernismo, y habla del amor y de sus fracasos. Algunos de sus temas son la deshumanizaci6n del mundo moderno, la fatalidad y la injusticia social, pero su tema principal es la guerra entre los sexes. Storni articula de manera muy elegance la situaci6n de la mujer .victima de la opresi6n general del hombre. Lucho coda su vida contra la desigualdad de derechos entre el hombre y la mujer, y expres6 su dolor contra el hombre hispanico que quiere que la mujer sea pura, y contra el encarcelamiento de la mujer: "Hombre pequefiito,hombre pequefiito, / suelta a tu canario, que quiere volar." Pero en un ensayo humorfstico y autobiografico que escribi6 poco tiempo antes de su muerte, Storni rechaz6 su primer libro La inquietud def rosa/, que caracteriza como "sencillamente abominable; cursi, mal medido a veces". Demostr6 mas caridad hacia lrremediablemente: "Los versos son como los panes que se sacan de un horno arrebatado. De vez en cuando se salva un panecillo que no esta ni crudo ni quemado". En estos poemas se destaca sobre todo el temor al amor desde el punto de vista de la mujer. En el mismo trabaio autobiografico, Storni admite que Ocre, su quinto volumen de poesias, "es ya un poco mejor; alga cerebral, pero se advierte que quien lo hizo gobernaba con alguna propiedad su instrumento". Publicado en 1925, Ocre funciona coma punto de transici6n a la segunda etapa poetica, marcada por la introspecci6n, no solamente sabre sus propias emociones personales, sine sabre la condici6n humana, tanto del hombre como de la mujer. Ya no muestra una hostilidad tan aguda contra el hombre. En esta epoca Storni empez6 a escribir teatro y, al volver·a la poesfa en 1934 con Mundo de siete pozos y el ultimo volumen p6stumo, Mascari/la y trebol, muestra una nueva libertad, rompiendo con la rima y la versificaci6n tradicionales.Algunos de las poemas, "antisonetos", muestran mas tension e intensidad. Es aquf principalmente donde Storni se aparta de ser etiquetada come una poeta femenina para reclamar su posici6n coma poeta mas universal. Peso ancestral Tu me dijiste: no llor6 mi padre; tu me dijiste: no llor6 mi abuelo; no han llorado los hombres de mi raza, eran de acero. Asf diciendo te brot6 una lagrima y me cay6 en la boca; mas veneno yo no he bebido nunca en otro vaso as1, pequeno.~ Debil mujer, pobre mujer que entiende, dolor de siglos conocf al beberlo. Salgado) This dissertation examines Alfonsina Storni’s construction of a feminist dramatic persona, filling a void in the study of the female subject in her theater. It focuses also on the ways in which Storni represents new models of women’s behavior within the more egalitarian society she imagines as well as on how the male characters are affected by the emergence of a feminine subject. The construction of new gender models and the demystification of old stereotypes is contextualized within Storni’s feminist agenda as expressed in her essays, poetry, and interviews. The Preface introduces the methodology, feminist theories, and critical works that back up my research. Chapter one is a general introduction to Argentine theater and Storni’s feminist approach to its renovation. (Alfonsina Storni: Analysis and Contextualization of Impressionism st yle in her chronicles.) Claudia Edith Mendez, Doctor in Philosophy, 2004. Dissertation directed by: Professor Sandra Messinger Cypess Department of Spanish and Portuguese Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938) was a seminal Argentinean author who had a deep influence both on her readers and other writers. Best -know for her poetic works, she also wrote poetry, theater, and works in prose. The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss her prose works, heretofore classified as articles, notes or essays, under the literary genre of chronicles, and analyze Storni’s style in these works, which is best described as literary impressionism. The corpus studied in comprised of 35 brief chronicles published in the magazine La Nota and some 30 more published in the Argentine newspaper La Nación from 1919-1937. These two groups form the majority of Storni’s chronicles. I also consider some chronicles which appeared in magazines such as Fray Mocho, Atlántida and Hebe. I addition I discuss two of her lectures, “Desovillando la raíz porteña” and “Entre un par de maletas a medio abrir y las manecillas de un reloj”. Some of the important themes or these works are women in the labor market, the place of women in modern society, and literary creation. The first chapter is dedicated to the definition of “chronicle” and “literary impressionism.” The second chapter surveys the critical literature on Storni in order to determine why her prose works have not previously been studied, and the third, fourth, and fifth analyze her chronic les and present an account or the historical circumstances in which they were produced.

    DELMIRA, ALFONSINA, JUANA Y GABRIELA: INTERTEXTUALIDADES Mirta Fernández dos Santos UNED [email protected] Resumen Por su condición de precursora de la poesía escrita por mujeres en el contexto literario rioplatense de comienzos del siglo XX, Delmira Agustini ha sido señalada en muchas ocasio- nes por la crítica como un referente incuestionable para las poetas que, en el mismo ambiente cultural, le tomaron el relevo: Alfonsina Storni, Juana de Ibarbourou y Gabriela Mistral. Pero, más allá de las concomitancias apuntadas por los críticos en lo que respecta a las influencias mutuas existentes entre las tres grandes poetas del Cono Sur, bajo el postulado previo de Del- mira, todas ellas se refirieron en algún momento de sus trayectorias literarias al carácter tute- lar de la poética de la autora de Los cálices vacíos.     The Politics of Form: Three Twentieth- Century Spanish American Poets and the Sonnet Jill S. Kuhnheim University of Kansas ABSTRACT This article engages the idea of poetic form to create a dialogue among three very different twentieth-century Spanish American poets: Argentine Alfonsina Storni, Chilean Enrique Lihn, and Cuban Rei- naldo Arenas. Each of them uses the sonnet’s privileged position in Western aesthetic tradition to manifest shifting relations to this tradition and to modernity. In this, they open a dialogue with the lettered elite and use part of their cultural inheritance as letrados to confront the old order through an established aesthetic form, to reconfigure or question the opposition between high and low cultural forms to varying degrees and to different ends. These poets resignify their cultural legacy and in the process demon- strate its malleability—the sonnet is not monolithic, but mutable. An invita- tion to reinvent, the sonnet as employed by these poets embodies a range of intercultural experiences of both continuity and transformation. These readings, which engage with a range of poetic traditions (such as North American New Formalism), reveal how the choice of poetic form both shapes and depends upon the author’s and his or her readers’ experience and how a particular aesthetic form is both charged and changed by circum- stance. In these days, when prose and visual images are the dominant forms of communication, thinking about the sonnet reminds us of how poetry works differently, of just what this particular genre can do. Poets who return to this deep-rooted literary form open a dialogue with tradition; they enter a conversation with other poets and readers through form.

Salgado) In this dissertation I discuss the ways in which socially conscious playwrights in early -twentieth century Argentina used and adapted theatre genres to advance women’s rights and project the feminist imagination. I also anal yze how theatre critics and spectators reacted to these early feminist spectacles. In Chapter 1, I provide an overview of the repression of women that was dictated by the Argentine Civil Code and the efforts of feminist activists to make reforms. I also de scribe how various playwrights (Salvadora Medina Onrubia, José González Castillo, César Iglesias Paz, Alfonsina Storni, and Malena Sándor) used the genre of thesis drama to support social and legislative progress from 1914 to 1937. I explain , in Chapter 2, how marginalized female playwrights (Lola Pita Martínez, Alcira Olivé, Carolina Alió, Salvadora Medina Onrubia and Alfonsina Storni) cultivated the unique strategy of “feminist melodrama,” which allowed them to endorse feminism from within an accepted “fe minine” genre.

Las convergencias podrı´an atribuirse al desgaste del referente modernista y al imaginario finisecular, pero tambie´n al arte portador de la crisis que antecede los problemas textuales del posmodernismo, al que entiendo aquı´ como el conjunto de tendencias multitu- dinarias y dispersas—segu´n refieren prolijamente Herve´ Le Corre (2001) y Gui- llermo Sucre (1975)—que, en palabras de Ramo´nLo´pez Velarde, plantean el discurso poe´tico como un ‘‘sistema crı´tico’’ (478). Aunque la crisis del modernismo aparece desde su concepcio´n con Rube´n Darı´o y se prolonga con Leopoldo Lugones, Julio Herrera y Reissig y Enrique Gonza´lez Martı´nez, sera´ el grupo de poetas posteriores—Ramo´nLo´pez Velarde, Evaristo Carriego, Luis Carlos Lo´pez, Carlos Pezoa Ve´liz, Baldomero Ferna´ndez, entre otros—quienes abren nuevos derroteros a la lı´rica en Hispanoame´rica. Los posmodernistas serı´an, entonces, precursores y pioneros de un nuevo lenguaje poe´tico ma´s que meros epı´gonos de una reto´rica languideciente: no tanto un movimiento a medio camino en la cuestionable lı´nea cronolo´gica que va del modernismo a las vanguardias, sino un conjunto de autores en cuyas obras la escritura se concibe como un espacio conflictivo e inestable.

    Classic Poetry Series Alfonsina Storni - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Alfonsina Storni(29 May 1892 – 25 October 1938) Storni was born in Sala Capriasca, Switzerland to an Argentine beer industrialist living in Switzerland for a few years. There, Storni learned to speak Italian. Following the failure of the family business, they opened a tavern in the city of Rosario, Argentina, where Storni worked at a variety of chores. In 1907, she joined a traveling theatre company which took her around the country. With them she performed in Henrik Ibsen's Spectres, Benito Pérez Galdós's La loca de la casa, and Florencio Sánchez's Los muertos. Back in Rosario she finished her studies as a rural primary teacher, and also started working for Mundo Rosarino and Monos y Monadas local magazines, as well as Mundo Argentino. In 1911 she moved to Buenos Aires, seeking the anonymity of a big city. The following year her son Alejandro was born, the illegitimate child of a journalist in Coronda. In spite of her economic difficulties, she published La inquietud del rosal in 1916, and later started writing for Caras y Caretas magazine while working as a cashier in a shop. Storni soon became acquainted with other writers such as José Enrique Rodó and <a href=" Her economic situation improved, which allowed her to travel to Montevideo, Uruguay. There she met the poet Juana de Ibarbourou, as well as Horacio Quiroga, with whom she would become great friends. Her 1920 book Languidez received the first Municipal Poetry Prize and the second National Literature Prize.
