Lot 870 870 C A- 1884 inwards from Germany endorsed "Via Southampton" with Eagle 10pf pair tied 'SONDERBURG/1 2/84' cds, taxed locally with 'T' boxed cachet & rated "25" in red pencil, endorsement crossed out & sent via Italy with 'BRINDISI/5/2-84' b/s, on arrival at Melbourne '1/1 TO PAY' oval cachet applied on face, a few minor blemishes. Melbourne tax markings known from this period are generally inscribed 'MORE TO PAY'; we surmise this h/s was manufactured to meet a particular short-lived rate & deficiency. Rated RRRRR: the only TPO cover recorded with a manuscript cancellation. Ex Roy Holland: sold for £252. [Roy Holland believed this marking was applied on the train, & this was echoed in the London catalogue. The Melbourne-Port Albert Line was completed by January 1892 but Molnar & Waugh at page 147 state TPO services didn't commence until 1898. However, by mid-1894 de facto TPO 20 & 21 services were operating, using mss markings. Les Molnar states #20 & 21 were shelved because of belt-tightening during the catastrophic Depression of the mid-1890s. 150T
