WELCOME ADDRESS

Dear Colleagues,

I am very happy to invite you to our 6th International Symposium on Metastases in Head and Neck Cancer that takes place in Marburg from January 24-27, 2013. This time we will again discuss different questions of regional and also distant metastasis, the possibilities of their early detection, and the prognostic potential of lymph node metastases. We will discuss the provoking thesis that lymph node metastases cannot induce distant metastases and critically question the value of neck dissection on the prognosis. Within all these metastasis-related topics we will insert a real highlight of modern medicine, the transoral robotic surgery. We will offer a first contact to this new technology in the context of a hands-on training.

You will see that real controversies and innovations are presented that make the participation in this meeting an interesting event. Beside the medical and ENT-related aspects, we hope that the social events taking place in the evenings will be used as occasions to continue discussions on a more informal level and to perhaps initiate further cooperation, but most of all to allow you to recover from “a long day’s journey into the night”.

We have inserted a new module in the program which is a satellite symposium on arterio- venous malformations of the head and neck. It was especially the particular growth behaviour that moved me to include this satellite symposium in our meeting. This growth pattern often shows a rather malignant behaviour. With this background, mostly head and neck surgeons have to cope with this topic so that I am sure that it is interesting for the participants.

The whole team of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, would like to welcome you and wish you enjoyable and interesting days here in Marburg!

Jochen A. Werner Symposium Chairman

ANNELIESE POHL COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER

In 2005, the Marburg Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) was founded based on the objective to promote the interdisciplinary cooperation of different oncologic institutions following the US American model. It is meant to be the basis to bring forward research and to translate research result from previous basic research directly to clinical treatment procedures.

In June 2012, it was renamed to Anneliese Pohl Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Faculty of Medicine and the Philipps University of Marburg recognize with this step the support and the achievements of the Honorary Senator of the Philipps University of Marburg and the Honorary Doctor of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Dr. Reinfried Pohl and his wife Anneliese Pohl who had died in 2008.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Pohl has repeatedly supported the cancer research in Marburg and thus created an extraordinary basis for the transfer of the results directly into the medical care of patients. This step effectively strengthened the oncologic focus of the University Hospital of Marburg.

The motto of the CCC is “Cancer: Research – Teach – Cure”. The Anneliese Pohl Comprehensive Cancer Center will ensure that we better understand the mechanisms of cancer diseases and improve the curing possibilities. Prof. Pohl’s support will further be stimulus to perform more and intensive research so that more patients may be cures.

For many years now, the research and the treatment of cancer diseases is in the focus of the University medicine of Marburg. Specific appointments of professors as well as the development of the Institute for Molecular Biology and Tumor Research, founded in 1988 as part of the Philipps University, formed the basis for the institution of the focus of oncology at the Faculty of Medicine at Marburg. Beside research and patients’ care, cancer treatment is also an important part of the teaching curriculum for students so that for the first time in Germany the priority curriculum of oncology was established that finds great interest among the medical students.
