  • TOWN HEBRON New Hampshire for the Fiscal Year
ANNUAL REPORT For The TOWN of HEBRON New Hampshire For the Fiscal Year Ending December 31, 2014 Dedication Phil and Betsy Twombly The Hebron Select Board would like to dedicate the 2014 Town Report to Phil and Betsy Twombly for their valuable contributions to the town and to the Newfound area. Phil and Betsy moved to Hebron full-time in 1990 into a beautiful home on Hobart Hill Road designed by their son Peter. But their presence goes a long way back! Betsy became a summer resident as a very young child when her parents built a log cabin on Owlshead on West Shore Road in the early 1930’s. After their marriage, Phil and Betsy raised their five children, summering at Owlshead and spending winter weekends skiing at Tenney Mountain. They now share that summer tradition with grandchildren and great grandchildren. As soon as they retired to Hebron, Betsy began Muddy Paws Pottery with her passion for ceramics. Phil joined the Planning Board and Betsy joined the Historic District Commission. They are active members of the Newfound Lake Region Association, the Hebron Audubon, and founders of the Naturally Newfound Fair. Phil and Betsy are also ardent volunteers, and you’ll find them pitching in everywhere. They take joy from everyone around them and return that energy tenfold. Their motto is: “Never stop moving,” and they live up to that every day. • Paper Quilling Purpose: in These Difficult Times, Simple Activities Can Help Keep Children Occupied and Distract Them from What Is Happening in the World
History at Home Activity: Paper Quilling Purpose: In these difficult times, simple activities can help keep children occupied and distract them from what is happening in the world. This activity gives children the opportunity to learn about a creative craft that dates back to Colonial times and have a little fun. Quilled artwork made out of canvas strips, produced by artists, Stephen Stum and Jason Hallman Info for Parents or Guardians: You could share a little or a lot of the historical information that follows with children depending on their ages before you start the activity. This activity is geared towards children ages 8 and up. If the children are younger, speak in more general terms and provide a greater amount of help with the activity. These activities are designed to allow you to utilize materials that you probably already have at home. Feel free to substitute other materials. For example, almost any kind of paper, including wrapping paper, would work for this activity. Vocabulary: 1. paper quilling: a decorative art that involves curling and/or shaping strips of paper into coils or other shapes that are then arranged on a flat background to form a picture or design. History of Paper Quilling: Paper quilling is an old decorative art form that involves curling or shaping strips of paper into coils or other shapes and arranging the shapes on a flat background to form a design or picture. • Passing Through: the Allure of the White Mountains
Passing Through: The Allure of the White Mountains The White Mountains presented nineteenth- century travelers with an American landscape: tamed and welcoming areas surrounded by raw and often terrifying wilderness. Drawn by the natural beauty of the area as well as geologic, botanical, and cultural curiosities, the wealthy began touring the area, seeking the sublime and inspiring. By the 1830s, many small-town tav- erns and rural farmers began lodging the new travelers as a way to make ends meet. Gradually, profit-minded entrepreneurs opened larger hotels with better facilities. The White Moun- tains became a mecca for the elite. The less well-to-do were able to join the elite after midcentury, thanks to the arrival of the railroad and an increase in the number of more affordable accommodations. The White Moun- tains, close to large East Coast populations, were alluringly beautiful. After the Civil War, a cascade of tourists from the lower-middle class to the upper class began choosing the moun- tains as their destination. A new style of travel developed as the middle-class tourists sought amusement and recreation in a packaged form. This group of travelers was used to working and commuting by the clock. Travel became more time-oriented, space-specific, and democratic. The speed of train travel, the increased numbers of guests, and a widening variety of accommodations opened the White Moun- tains to larger groups of people. As the nation turned its collective eyes west or focused on Passing Through: the benefits of industrialization, the White Mountains provided a nearby and increasingly accessible escape from the multiplying pressures The Allure of the White Mountains of modern life, but with urban comforts and amenities.
