Anuran vocalizations, such as advertisement and release calls, are informative for taxonomy because species recognition can be based on those signals. Thus, a proper acoustic description of the calls may support taxonomic decisions and may contribute to knowledge about amphibian phylogeny. Methods. Here we present a perspective on advertisement call descriptions of the frog subfamily Lophyohylinae, through a literature review and a spatial analysis presenting bioacoustic coldspots (sites with high diversity of species lacking advertisement call descriptions) for this taxonomic group. Additionally, we describe the advertisement and release calls of the still poorly known treefrog, Itapotihyla langsdorffii. We analyzed recordings of six males using the software Raven Pro 1.4 and calculated the coefficient Submitted 24 February 2018 of variation for classifying static and dynamic acoustic properties. Recently, six species have been reported to be infected by chytridiomycosis in Brazil, presenting a wide range of distribution, of about 2,400 km over the Atlantic Forest. However, in a country such as Brazil, information about this disease is still beginning to accumulate. Based on morphological and histological data, we found evidence of B. dendrobatidis infection in 16 Brazilian anuran species, members of the families Cycloramphidae and Hylidae. We analyzed tadpoles lacking teeth that were collected from 1964 to 2005, to seek for chytridiomycosis. Our results extend the distribution of the fungus in Brazil ca. 630 km southward (straight-line distance), reaching the southernmost limits of the Atlantic rainforest. We also speculate about its distribution in the Cerrado and Pantanal. Por ejemplo, la escogencia de sitios de reproducción adecuados y el control de la temperatura del microhábitat reproductivo suelen considerarse de gran importancia en hábitats con baja predictibilidad ambiental. Para probar la hipótesis de que los sitios de construcción de nidos cumplen una función adaptativa diferencial entre ambientes acuáticos y terrestres, se siguieron dos aproximaciones, una ecofisiológica y una filogenética, con especies de la familia Leptodactylidae. En el primer caso, se midieron las distancias de los nidos de tres especies simpátricas con respecto al agua, se determinó el éxito de eclosión de la especie acuática entre ambientes, y se caracterizaron térmicamente nidos y ambientes acuáticos y terrestres. Para la aproximación filogenética se recopiló información de características reproductivas (número y diámetro de huevos) y se probó su relación con el sitio de construcción de los nidos. Se encontró un uso diferencial en los sitios de construcción de nidos que sustenta la clina de terrestrialidad sugerida para leptodactílidos en nuestro modelo de estudio. -

Biota Neotropica. 18(3): e20170322. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1676-0611-BN-2017-0322 Abstract: The state of Paraná, located in southern Brazil, was originally covered almost entirely by the Atlantic Forest biome, with some areas of Cerrado savanna. In the present day, little of this natural vegetation remains, mostly remnants of Atlantic Forest located in the coastal zone. While some data are available on the anurans of the state of Paraná, no complete list has yet been published, which may hamper the understanding of its potential anuran diversity and limit the development of adequate conservation measures. To rectify this situation, we elaborated a list of the anuran species that occur in state of Paraná, based on records obtained from published sources. We recorded a total of 137 anuran species, distributed in 13 families. Nineteen of these species are endemic to the state of Paraná and five are included in the red lists of the state of Paraná, Brazil and/or the IUCN. -

Based on the species specificity of anuran vocalization, bioacoustics can be utilized in terms of species identification and species delimitation. The genus Theloderma comprises 23 to 29 species, depending on inclusion of the (sub)genera Nyctixalus and Stelladerma, from which the majority of 14 species was described in this century. In spite of numerous publications about species descriptions and phylogenetics, studies about life history traits, particularly about advertisement calls, are lacking for the most species. In this study, acoustic signals of the mossy or bug-eyed frogs Theloderma corticale, T. albopunctatum and T. licin were recorded, and detailed temporal and spectral advertisement call properties are presented and compared to other congenerics (T. auratum, T. stellatum, T. vietnamense). We found that the advertisement calls of the six herein compared species are species-specific and are significantly distinguishable from each other. While the temporal features (i.e. arrangement in call groups, note repetition rate) are species-specific call properties, the spectral features (i.e. dominant frequency) can partially overlap among the small-sized species. -

Phylogenetic Analysis of the Subfamily Hylodinae (Anura, Leptodactylidae) Based on Morphological Characters

The systematics and phylogenetic relationships of the family Leptodactylidae are controversial as is the intrafamilial phylogeny of the leptodactylids. Here we analyze the relationships of the leptodactylid subfamily Hylodinae. This subfamily has been considered to be monophyletic and composed of three genera, Hylodes, Crossodactylus and Megaelosia. In the present study 49 characters were used, based on different studies on Leptodactylidae phylogeny. Maximum parsimony methods with unweighted and successively weighted characters were used to estimate the phylogeny of the Hylodinae. Upon analysis, the data provided further evidence of the monophyletic status of the three genera, with Megaelosia being the basal genus and the other two genera being sister taxa. The analysis with successive weighting results in a more resolved topology of the species subgroups of the genus Hylodes and separates this genus from Crossodactylus and confirms that the hylodines are monophyletic.
