There are constant twists of perspective. I become dizzy, as if I were riding a roller coaster through a primeval forest. There are trees standing there like musicians, and each of their green sheets of music resembles a painting or a book. I want to stay still to study them, but it doesn’t work, and right now it’s exciting to keep pace with the music. Life doesn’t wait for us, nor does music. We still don’t miss anything. Hundreds of ghosts and monsters are hiding in these woods. They aren’t malicious, more humorous, but still so energetic that their strength can frighten a civilised human being. The figure “Oni” from Japanese folklore is more comparable to Dionysus than to a devil.

BERLIN CALLING Short biographies Carsten Daerr – piano Born 1975 in Berlin. Classical piano lessons from 1982-95. From 1988-1991, he won several first prizes in the student composition competition "Schüler Komponieren". From 1996-2002, he studied jazz piano at the UdK Berlin with Kirk Nurock and Hubert Nuß. He received composition lessons from James Knapp, Maria Schneider and others. He has been leading and co-leading his own projects since 1998: "TUOMI" (with singer Kristiina Tuomi and Carlos Bica; CD-release of "Tightrope Walker" in 2005), the Carsten Daerr Trio (with Eric Schaefer and Oliver Potratz; CDs "PurpleCoolCarSleep" in 2003 and "Bantha Food" in 2006), the ensemble Daerr/Sieverts/Jütte (CD "Germany 12 Points", 2006, ACT 9653-2). Furthermore, he continually writes for various line-ups (f.ex.: a tribute to Rainer Maria Rilke, 2006). He has worked live and in the studio with Michael Schiefel, the Till Brönner Quintett, Christopher Dell, Christof Lauer and others. Daniel Erdmann – tenor-, soprano- and baritone sax Born on October 28th,1973 in Wolfsburg. Erdmann has been playing the saxophone since 1983. He studied jazz saxophone from 1994-1999 at the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin and received a grant from the Franco/German cultural council in 2001. He has been commuting between Berlin and Paris since then. From 1999 various CD-releases, his latest as a leader being: "Welcome to E3k" with his band Erdmann 3000. He has been playing in Europe, Asia and North America since 1989 with, among others, Aki Takase, Ed Schuller, John Schröder, Linda Sharrock, Yves Robert, Conny Bauer, Gebhard Ullmann, Frank Möbus, Herb Robertson, Tony Buck, Axel Dörner, John Betsch, Rudi Mahall, Pierre Dörge, Joe Williamson, Hans Hassler, Hasse Poulsen, Peter Kowald, Paul Brody and Chris Dahlgren.

Music related to Paul Bley: perhaps a homage. Musical trails has been left and small revolutions triggered. Oberg & Eberhard take them up and lead them without sentimentality to today. SILKE EBERHARD *1972 Alto saxophonist and clarinetist Silke Eberhard has studied at the Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler in Berlin, followed by David Liebman´s masterclass in the USA, and the Jazz Workshop + Residency at the Banff Centre of the Arts in Canada. In 2004/2005 she was a guest-professor at the Ponitificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá in Colombia. Besides her longstanding Trio with Jan Roder on bass and Kay Lübke on drums, current projects are the Duo OCA with pianist Aki Takase and Potsa Lotsa – a lineup of horns, play the complete compositions of Eric Dolphy. She has performed and/or recorded with musicians such as Ulrich Gumpert, David Liebman, Johannes Bauer, Sabine Worthmann, Günter Baby Sommer, Dave Burrell, Gerry Hemingway, Petra Krumphuber, Alex Huber, Michael Zerang, Louis Rastig, Niko Meinhold, Antonis Anissegos, Terry Lyne Carrington, Hannes Zerbe, Olaf Rupp, NeWt Trio a.m.o. IRÈNE SCHWEIZER INTAKT RECORDS Irène Schweizer writes jazz history, and this catalogue documents the musical work of the jazz pianist. Demonstrating a responsibility for the music, Intakt Records, in collaboration with the artist, has made a carefully curated selection of work accessible. Given the abundance of artistic production, this is a project that is still far from being completed. The compilation reveals the main focuses of Irène Schweizer’s music. The great solo recordings, which present the broad spectrum of the musician. The piano-drums works with the most important percussionists in jazz today. The feminist mani- festos with musicians like Joëlle Léandre, Maggie Nicols, Marilyn Crispell and Co Streiff. The close connection to the tradition of black American jazz with Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Andrew Cyrille, Hamid Drake, Fred Anderson and George Lewis. And so it is also in improvised contexts.” Matana Roberts 2 Vorwort Jazz ist vor allem die Kunst der Konversation, des Austauschs neuer Ideen zwischen Einzelnen, Generationen, Nationen, Geschlechtern. In seiner grundlegendsten Form kann auch nur ein/e Musiker*in seine oder ihre eigene Weltsicht in einem inneren Dialog erforschen. Jazz kann der Dialog zwischen Menschen sein, oder die formalere Zwiesprache zwischen Improvisator*in und Komponist*in. Konversation ist eines der Themen des diesjährigen Jazzfest Berlin, das beginnen wird mit einer musikalischen Hommage der amerikanischen Saxofonistin und Klangkünst- lerin Matana Roberts an die verstorbene deutsche Choreografin Pina Bausch in der Rekonstruktion des berühmten Lichtburg-Probenraums im Rahmen der Ausstellung im Martin-Gropius-Bau. Mit dieser Veranstaltung eröffnet das Festival am Dienstag, dem 1. November. 24 Stunden später folgt ein Konzert in einer weiteren neuen Spiel- stätte, der Salle Boris Vian des Institut Français, wo der Sänger Michael Schiefel und das Wood & Steel Trio eine Neuinterpretation der Lieder präsentieren, die Hanns Eisler im Exil in Hollywood komponierte. Einige Konversationen sind in ihrer Konstellation eher intim. Zu ihren musika- lischen Partnern gehör(t)en Han Bennink, evan Parker, Rudi Mahall, David Murray, Louis Sclavis und Fred Frith sowie der Pianist Alexander von Schlip- penbach. ingrid Laubrock, 1970 in Stadlohn in Nordrhein-Westfalen geboren, zog im Alter von 19 Jahren nach London. Sie studierte bei den Saxofonisten Jean Toussaint und Dave Liebman. Seit 2008 lebt sie in Brooklyn. In ihren Ver- öffentichungen zeigt sie ein grosses musikalisches Spektrum, das über das Quintett Anti-House bis hin zu den Orchesteraufnahmen von „Contemporary Chaos Practices“ von 2018 reicht. "Ingrid ist eine meiner Lieblingssaxofonistinnen", sagt Aki Takase. "Sie ist eine talentierte Spielerin mit viel Technik, sehr kreativ, klug und vor allem liebe ich ihre engagierte einstellung zum Musikmachen. und Ingrid Laubrock sagt über Aki Takase: "es fühlt sich toll an, mit Aki zu spielen.
