After Poole enters the Order's vast underground city and meets the disturbing inhabitants, he uncovers evidence that they have embarked on a divergent evolutionary path. Just a bit of post-thesis escapism - on that basis I guess it delivers. An epistolary frame, or a nested Thousand and One Nights -style narrative could easily have done the trick. There are plenty of names that don't carry any associations, which could have easily been used. It's a 4 book series, so I'm willing to give the next book a chance who am I kidding, I'll still probably read all 4 regardless These moments are few and far between, but they provide a hint as to the greatness that is to come. OK, like many others on here, I thought this was going to be a full science fiction novel. If a story is theoretically possible apart from a few minor details is it still science fiction. In , Frank Herbert wrote a book called Hellstrom's Hive in which it described a sect of people that lived underground, in a system much alike insects, with individuals specialised for different tasks and all living for the big hive organism. Not only are we constricted to Earth, we are on medieval and modern Earth and even underground for most of the times. And then, to make matters worse, in the last three chapters of that stream, the narrative suddenly leaps forward twenty thousand years into the future, springs back to the present day and jumps forward yet again. After Poole enters the Order's vast underground city and meets the disturbing inhabitants, he uncovers evidence that they have embarked on a divergent evolutionary path. If I'd paid good money for it, I'd be kicking myself. Regina is the star of the show--her drive to survive, and some of the things she does in order to do so, are fascinating. Andy Love There is a section at the end of the book which takes place in the far future, during the wars with the Xeelee. It took me three tries until i got hooked. Get A Copy. They just go for it: they swarm, as Peter McLachlan would have said, a mass of individuals relying on the unwritten rules of the mob to get them through. A lot of characters are developed and a lot of history both personal and general is detailed, but in the end the characters vanish as if they never mattered. It really seemed to me to get it right: how things slowly fell apart, and never got right again. The lowest-priced item in unused and unworn condition with absolutely no signs of wear. There's a somewhat interesting segue to the story as Regina joins King Arthur's court, becoming the historical inspiration for Morgan by virtue of being Merlin's rival; however, it serves no real purpose except being clever, and actually detracts from the goals of Regina's story arc, which is to provide a historically believeable context to the founding of the Order. The later historical episodes were perhaps less enthralling, but the book overall was a good read. The story was really interesting. Destiny's Children 1 , Xeelee Sequence 9. This first book of the series seems to be the runway toward the 'regular' science fiction in the following novels in the series. Usually Baxter has a decent concept which he then builds a story around. Bottom line, I think it would be a nice read to start with Coalescent and then read Hellstrom's Hive, although I do think the second book to be much better. People have adapted to living on a vertical surface: there are public staircases you can follow all the way to the next town. The book weaves together three narratives: George Poole's first person mystery as he searches for his lost sister; the historical fiction 5th Century exploits of one of his ancestors Regina, who lives through the fall of the Roman Empire in Britain, moves to Rome, and founds the Order; and the modern SF story of Lucia, one of the members of the Order.

    Alastair Reynolds Born in 1966, Alastair Reynolds trained as an astronomer before working for the European Space Agency on a variety of science projects. He started publishing science fiction in 1990, and has now produced more than sixty short stories, as well as fourteen solo novels. His recent books include the Poseidon's Children trilogy, a Doctor Who novel, and a collaboration with Stephen Baxter, entitled The Medusa Chronicles. He has won the BSFA, Sidewise, Seiun and European Science Fiction Society awards, and has been a finalist for the Hugo, Arthur C Clarke, Locus and Sturgeon awards.     Natural Selection and Coalescent Theory John Wakeley Harvard University INTRODUCTION The story of population genetics begins with the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species and the tension which followed concerning the nature of inheritance. Today, workers in this field aim to understand the forces that produce and maintain genetic variation within and between species. For this we use the most direct kind of genetic data: DNA sequences, even entire genomes. Our “Great Obsession” with explaining genetic variation (Gillespie, 2004a) can be traced back to Darwin’s recognition that natural selection can occur only if individuals of a species vary, and this variation is heritable. Darwin might have been surprised that the importance of natural selection in shaping variation at the molecular level would be de-emphasized, beginning in the late 1960s, by scientists who readily accepted the fact and importance of his theory (Kimura, 1983). The motivation behind this chapter is the possible demise of this Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution, which a growing number of population geneticists feel must follow recent observations of genetic variation within and between species. One hundred fifty years after the publication of the Origin, we are struggling to fully incorporate natural selection into the modern, genealogical models of population genetics. The main goal of this chapter is to present the mathematical models that have been used to describe the effects of positive selective sweeps on genetic variation, as mediated by gene genealogies, or coalescent trees. Background material, comprised of population genetic theory and simulation results, is provided in order to facilitate an understanding of these models.
