Cover Story Last Stand Goshutes battle to save their sacred water By Stephen Dark May 9, 2012 - In Spring Valley in eastern Nevada, the swamp cedar trees stand in somber silence. No more than a mile or so long, they are a narrow strip of sentries marking the place where, the Goshutes say, men, women and children belonging to the Goshute and Shoshone tribes were massacred in 1863 and again in 1897. In this hushed grove, the Goshute, along with the Duckwater and Ely Shoshone tribes, come to mourn and conduct spiritual ceremonies. Rupert Steele picks off a piece of cedar bark and rubs it up and down an eagle feather. The former chairman of the council of the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation then throws tobacco in different directions at the entrance to the swamp cedar grove and sings a sacred song in Goshute. He explains he’s acknowledging the spirits of those killed by the U.S. military and giving them thanks “for letting us come here and visit with you at your house.” Steele and the elders of his tiny tribe—out of 539 enrolled tribal members, approximately 200 live on the Goshute reservation in Deep Creek Valley, Utah—believe that where each murdered soul fell, the nutrients of their remains fed both physically and spiritually the swamp-cedar trees. “Otherwise you’d never see swamp cedar grow this tall and strong,” he says. As Steele sings, he “feathers up,” fluttering the eagle feather up and down his body so that the spirits he has brought with him stay outside the swamp cedar site. -

Duff^ Abstract.— Recent discoveries of native cutthroat trout populations in desert mountain ranges on the western fringe of the Bonneville Basin have prompted intensified management efforts by state and federal agencies. Anal- ysis of Snake Valley cutthroat specimens in Trout Creek, Deep Creek Mountain Range, Utah, indicate this is a pure strain of the trout which once inhabited Pleistocene Lake Bonneville and which was thought to be extinct in Utah. The Snake Valley cutthroat is similar to Salmo clarki Utah of the eastern Bonneville Basin; however, electrophoretic and morphomeristic analysis show unique genetic differences brought about by long-term isolation (8,000 years) from the remainder of the Bonneville Basin cutthroat. -

BEHLE In furtherance of a long-time survey of the avifauna of Utah the Deep Creek Mountain region of the central western part of the state was chosen as an area for intensive study. It was expected that gradients would occur in the characters of geographically variable birds between populations from the isolated ranges of the Great Basin and birds from the Wasatch Mountains to the northeast, those mountains that form the abrupt eastern margin of the Great Basin or the high plateaus of central and southern Utah. The Deep Creek region seemed most propitious for collecting a representation of the Great Basin races. While the analysis of the geographical variation was the main objective of the study and large series of the variable birds were desired, in accord with the general practice of making avifaunistic studies of particular regions, samples of other birds were taken when possible, and a study was made of the ecology of the birds of the region. Although the emphasis was on collecting, attention was paid to abundance, behavior, and life history features, as opportunity was afforded. Working out the details of the variation through out Utah must await the accumulation of additional material from many other locations, but in the meantime the results of the Deep Creek Mountain survey may well be placed on record to reveal the nature of the avifauna of this portion of Utah. -

Goshute Indian Reservations
Bureau of Indian Affairs Summary for Ely, Duckwater, and Goshute Indian Reservations ELY SHOSHONE INDIAN RESERVATION LOCATION The Ely Shoshone Indian Reservation (Reservation) is located near the town of Ely in White Pine County, in east central Nevada. The Reservation is comprised of three separate parcels covering approximately 111 acres in the Steptoe Valley hydrographic basin (Exhibit 4502). ESTABLISHMENT OF RESERVATION The Ely Reservation was established by an Act of Congress in 1930 (46 Stat. 820) (Exhibit 4503). Subsequent Acts added lands in 1931 (46 Stat. 1122) (Exhibit 4504) and 1977 (91 Stat. 1406) (Exhibit 4505). All of these lands are held in trust by the United States on behalf of the Ely Shoshone Indian Tribe. The Tribe is pursuing additional lands located southwest and southeast of the existing tribal lands. ENVIRONMENT The Reservation is primarily developed as residential, industrial, or commercial areas. If the Tribe succeeds in obtaining additional trust lands, other land uses may be developed. WATER RESOURCES The Reservation receives its municipal and domestic water from the town of Ely. If the Tribe succeeds in obtaining additional trust lands, other land uses may be pursued that require the Tribe to develop their own water resources. Water Rights The Tribe’s water rights have not been adjudicated by an appropriate court. At present, the Tribe has not developed its own water resources on its current land base. If the Tribe obtains additional trust lands, developed water resources and water rights may be needed to develop the lands. 1 DUCKWATER INDIAN RESERVATION LOCATION The Duckwater Indian Reservation (Reservation) is located in Nye County, Nevada in east central Nevada. -
The Goshute Indians of Utah
The Goshute Indians of Utah Dennis R. Defa The Goshute Indians live in a little known and sparsely populated portion of the state of Utah. There actually are two Goshute reserva tions, the largest of which is the Deep Creek Reservation located on the Utah-Nevada border about sixty miles south of Wendover, with a por tion of the reservation in each state. The second, and smaller, reservation is located in Skull Valley in Tooele County, about ninety miles west of Salt Lake City. Most people who visit this region of the state view it as a harsh, hard, and unforgiving place and wonder why anyone would choose to live there. However, for the Goshutes this desert region is home and they view it much differently than does the casual visitor. Before white Americans moved into the region, the Goshutes knew the land intimately and took from it all they needed to sustain life. As efficient and effective hunters and gatherers, they understood the fragile nature of the desert and maintained a balance that provided for their needs without destroy ing the limited resources of their arid homeland. At the time of their first contacts with whites, the Goshute people lived in the desert regions southwest of the Great Salt Lake. Exact bound aries are difficult to determine because of the nature of the land and the proximity of other peoples, but early chroniclers and surveyors provided some written descriptions of the general Goshute homelands. Captain James H. Simpson located the Goshute from the Great Salt Lake to the Un-go-we-ah Range, or Steptoe Mountains, in Nevada. -
