Approved Terminology Associated with Sunnylands Historic Estate UPDATED (8.22.2017) Approved terminology associated with Sunnylands historic estate The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands is a 200-acre historic estate (400 total acres of property - Grounds) featuring the: historic house(residence acceptable) 25,000 sq ft (designed by A. Quincy Jones) which has two guest wings: Guest Wing East includes: The Yellow Room (favored by Nancy and Ronald Reagan) The Pink Room The Game Room Guest Wing West includes: The Blue Room (favored by Barbara and George Bush) The Green Room The Peach Room Courtyard formerly the service wing Also on the historic estate are three guest cottages labeled by the Annenbergs as Cottage 1, Cottage 2, and Cottage 3 (10,000 sq ft total) see updated names below. The operations building, three greenhouses, and a maintenance building are also located on the grounds. The grounds of the historic estate include a nine-hole golf course (designed by Dick Wilson) and a number of works of art. Adjacent to the historic estate is the Center designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners. It is situated on 15 acres of land of which nine comprise the Gardens designed by The Office of James Burnett. Constructed on 250 acres of raw desert near the intersection of Wonder Palms Road and Rio Del Sol (now Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope Drives), the 32,000 square foot house was completed in 1965. Most exterior surfaces are medium-smooth stucco with square, painted concrete block used for some walls and also for the battered walls that descend into a lake and the swimming pool. Most windows are stretch from ceiling to floor. The primary roof element is a “monitor,” a raised cupola of open fretwork that rises out of a Mayan/Japanese-inspired pyramid roof to illuminate the square atrium in the living room. The remaining roof area is flat. The sloping portion of the roof and exterior walls are painted pink in homage to the color of the mountains seen during summer sunsets. The roofline and color repeat where the outdoor terrace slopes down into the swimming pool.

The 200-acre Sunnylands, with its spacious Mary Gilbert 25,000-square-foot residence, was the winter home of billionaire Walter and Leonore Annenberg. Now a high-level retreat center, Sunnylands is renowned for its architecture, interior design, art collection, and the myriad Hollywood and sports celebrities, presidents, royalty, Supreme Court justices, business leaders and other dignitaries who visited the Annenbergs. The anniversary coincides with Sunnylands’ plans to begin construction of a new archives building to house the Annenbergs’ art and artifacts. Sunnylands invited the public with a personal history with Sunnylands to share their stories and mementos, their names to be registered in the archives. Sunnylands is hosting multiple 50th anniversary events. The celebration kicked off Sept. 24, the season’s opening day. Visitors received a free, custom- designed commemorative pin featuring the home’s iconic pink roof. The next day, Sunnylands showed “Oceans 11” on its great lawn, the first of three films scheduled to be screened this fall starring Frank Sinatra, the Annenbergs' friend and neighbor, whose centennial birthday is Dec. 12. Other happenings are: • “Day of the Dead” activities and art installations in conjunction with CV Days of Los Muertos in late October and early November.
