  • The Biggest Hits of All: the Hot 100'S All-Time Top 100 Songs
The Biggest Hits of All: The Hot 100's All-Time Top 100 Songs billboard.com/articles/news/hot-100-turns-60/8468142/hot-100-all-time-biggest-hits-songs-list Adele, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Chubby Checker, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain & Whitney Houston Getty Images; Photo Illustration by Quinton McMillan As part of Billboard's celebration of the 60th anniversary of our Hot 100 chart this week, we're taking a deeper look at some of the biggest artists and singles in the chart's history. Here, we revisit the ranking's 100 biggest hits of all-time. On Aug. 4 1958, Billboard launched the Hot 100, forever changing pop music -- or at least how it's measured. Sixty years later, the chart remains the gold-standard ranking of America's top songs each week. And while what goes into a hit has changed (bye, bye jukebox play; hello, streaming!), attaining a spot on the list -- or better yet, a coveted No. 1 -- i s still the benchmark to which artists explore, from Ricky Nelson on the first to Drake on the latest. Which brings us to the hottest-of-the-hot list the 100 most massive smashes over the charts six decades. 1/10 1. The Twist - 1960 Chubby Checker The only song to rule the Billboard Hot 100 in separate release cycles (one week in 1960, two in 1962), thanks to adults catching on to the song and its namesake dance after younger audiences popularized them. 2. Smooth - 1999 Santana Feat. Rob Thomas 3.

  • A Gibb Friend Who Lifts Me Up…
MoRobinBarryStories A GIBB FRIEND WHO LIFTS ME UP…. Posted on February 26, 2015 by morobinbarrystories Welcome to morobinbarrystories.com! Please join me on twitter @morobinbarry. This site is for Bee Gee fans everywhere who would like to read and share stories of hope, joy, love and inspiration for Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. (Andy is not forgotten and is included at times). If you’d like to share a story, please email it to me at [email protected]. Stories will be posted often, some from my collected tales and some from the new ones as they come in. Others I will save for my book, which is in progress. At times, I will write about events that relate to the Gibbs that I hope fans will enjoy. February 26, 2015 Barry Gibb with Gary Kleiman at Love and Hope Ball, 2015 My involvement with the Diabetes Research Institute began because I was curious about why the Gibb family supported this charity. Most fans didn’t even know the details and neither did I, so I set out over a year ago to get the facts and share it with Bee Gee lovers on every continent. I did that, and anyone can read the stories on this blog and on the GSI international website. I like to think that fans now understand why Barry and Linda and all the Gibbs help the DRI and why they have supported this Foundation for decades. I also pray that fans will take action and follow suit, extending the reach of awareness and fundraising that is needed.

  • BUT WILL IT PLAY in GRAND RAPIDS? the ROLE of GATEKEEPERS in MUSIC SELECTION in 1960S TOP 40 RADIO
BUT WILL IT PLAY IN GRAND RAPIDS? THE ROLE OF GATEKEEPERS IN MUSIC SELECTION IN 1960s TOP 40 RADIO By Leonard A. O’Kelly A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Media and Information Studies - Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT BUT WILL IT PLAY IN GRAND RAPIDS? THE ROLE OF GATEKEEPERS IN MUSIC SELECTION IN 1960s TOP 40 RADIO By Leonard A. O’Kelly The decision to play (or not to play) certain songs on the radio can have financial ramifications for performers and for radio stations alike in the form of ratings and revenue. This study considers the theory of gatekeeping at the individual level, paired with industry factors such as advertising, music industry promotion, and payola to explain how radio stations determined which songs to play. An analysis of playlists from large-market Top 40 radio stations and small-market stations within the larger stations’ coverage areas from the 1960s will determine the direction of spread of song titles and the time frame for the spread of music, shedding light on how radio program directors (gatekeepers) may have been influenced in their decisions. By comparing this data with national charts, it may also be possible to determine whether or not local stations had any influence over the national trend. The role of industry trade publications such as Billboard and The Gavin Report are considered, and the rise of the broadcast consultant as a gatekeeper is explored. This study will also analyze the discrepancy in song selection with respect to race and gender as compared to national measures of popularity.

  • LEGACY.COM, Andy Gibb
LEGACY.COM (copyright) Andy Gibb – In the Shadow of the Bee Gees 3/5/2011 Teen idol Andy Gibb had a slew of hits in the late 1970s but struggled to emerge from the shadow of his older siblings. On what would have been his 53rd birthday, we take a look back. Born Andrew Roy Gibb on March 5, 1958, Andy grew up near Brisbane, Australia, the youngest son of Hugh and Barbara, working-class musicians who’d emigrated from Manchester, England. The Gibb parents encouraged their five children to pursue showbiz and Andy’s three older brothers proved wildly successful. Barry, Maurice and Robin – better known as The Bee Gees – would dominate the charts, first in the late 1960s as a soft rock act whose finely honed pop sensibilities won them comparisons to The Beatles (who they often covered), and later during the disco era when their music was showcased in the film Saturday Night Fever . More than a decade younger than the oldest Bee Gee, Andy at once sought to emulate and distance himself from his successful brothers early in life, as their fame brought him unwanted attention at school, where he was subject to bullying and ridicule by classmates convinced that his musical heritage gave him a superiority complex. While he sought his own identity, he didn’t stray far from the family business. At age 13, he began performing in Ibiza, a tourist destination in Spain popular with vacationing Brits. While it was generally assumed he would join The Bee Gees when he got old enough, Andy was determined to forge his own path.

  • For Andy Gibbs Memory
FOR ANDY GIBBS MEMORY Deborah CRISTINA, Sicily (Italy) My Dear Lifelong Fans of our beloved Andy GIBB, I decided to embark on this adventure because some years ago Andy GIBB touched my heart in a very special way. Since then, I deeply feel the desire that the memory of this young artist, whose smile and talent are indelibly imprinted in the memory of innumerable fans, is honored in the most beautiful way. The things that made Andy unique were out of the simple performance, which always excelled, and came straight to the people's heart because they had to do with the qualities that make a human being really special: I refer to respect, altruism, sincerity, good manners and, special note, the sense of humor. Andy GIBB was all this and anyone who had the privilege of meeting him knows it perfectly. That's why I like to say that, if there was Andy, the world would be a pretty better place! In March 2018 we celebrate 30 years since the premature death of Andy GIBB: as I’ve written, he will be always remembered, not only as a talented and charismatic performer, but as a beloved family member and a special friend who gave so much of himself to others, especially as an honorary member of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation in Miami. Andy, born in England and raised in Australia, loved Miami and the ocean so much and fans of all over the world still miss him, not only for his string of multi-platinum albums, for his two Grammy Award nominations and for his unforgettable Broadway debut, but, as Robin GIBB said, “especially for his capacity to reach the hearts of the people, because it isn’t just about the sound or the song, but the human connection”.

  • Politics As Unusual: Washington, D.C
Abstract Title of Dissertation: POLITICS AS UNUSUAL: WASHINGTON, D.C. HARDCORE PUNK 1979-1983 AND THE POLITICS OF SOUND Shayna L Maskell, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Nancy Struna, Chair, Department of American Studies During the creative and influential years between 1979 and 1983, hardcore punk was not only born — a mutated sonic stepchild of rock n’ roll, British and American punk — but also evolved into a uncompromising and resounding paradigm of and for DC youth. Through the revelatory music of DC hardcore bands like Bad Brains, Teen Idles, Minor Threat, State of Alert, Government Issue and Faith a new formulation of sound, and a new articulation of youth, arose: one that was angry, loud, fast, and minimalistic. With a total of only ten albums between all five bands in a mere five years, DC hardcore cemented a small yet significant subculture and scene. This project considers two major components of this music: aesthetics and the social politics that stem from those aesthetics. By examining the way music communicates — facets like timbre, melody, rhythm, pitch, volume and dissonance — while simultaneously incorporating an analysis of hardcore’s social context — including the history of music’s cultural canons, as well as the specific socioeconomic, racial and gendered milieu in which music is generated, communicated and responded to —this dissertation attempts to understand how hardcore punk conveys messages of social and cultural politics, expressly representations of race, class and gender. In doing so, this project looks at how DC hardcore (re)contextualizes and (re)imagines the social and political meanings created by and from sound.
