Analysis of that infrastructure unveils an amalgamation of blended characteristics derived from the French, British, and American systems along with characteristics derived from the Southwest’s own evolutionary development over time and space. -

The drive to acquire valuable hides drove the early colonial economy and served as one of the industries which pushed Americans to expand their national reach beyond the Rocky Mountains, the British, Scots, and Russians to move southward from Canada and Alaska, and the Spanish to assert their claim to the North. Admittedly, the Spanish were latecomers to the fur trade and often lacked the population and practical experience to pursue trapping as a nationalized industry, however, the portion of North America they laid claim to boasted far greater riches in fine furs than in the mineral resources typically sought after by Spanish. -

HOLMES* ILLIAM BECKNELL was called by Hiram Chittenden "the W founder of the Santa Fe trade and the father of the Santa Fe trail." 1 Becknell's expedition from Missouri to Santa Fe in 1821, the year of Missouri's statehood and Mex ico's independence, helped to make known the new attitude of the New Mexicans toward Yankee traders. His trip of 1822 with wagons revealed greater possibilities than might have been realized if the trade were to depend on pack animals. There has been a tendency, however, to emphasize the Becknell trips at the expense of several other Missouri trav elers who played a significant part in opening the Santa Fe trade. Important among these venturesome men from the Boonslick country were the Coopers: Benjamin, Stephen, and Braxton, who went out with parties in 1822 and 1823. -
