Description Cuzco is a Victorian property that was built in 1900 by a Captain Ridler and named after his favourite ship. The current vendors have carried out a substantial amount of refurbishment and improvement, and the result is a welcoming family home which is very well-presented throughout but still retaining the charm and character of the original property. The new kitchen, complete with an Aga, granite worktops, karndean flooring and views over the garden, forms the focal point of daily life and sits adjacent to the dining room. There are two further reception rooms, being the double aspect sitting room on the east side of the entrance hall and the study/office on the western side. There is a charming sunroom at the eastern end of the dining room, and the utility room adjacent to the back door at the western end of the kitchen completes the ground floor accommodation. Upstairs there are five bedrooms and two bathrooms, with an independent WC at the western end of the property. The high ceilings and large windows create a very light property, typical of homes from this era. With the picture rails and ceiling roses, Captain Ridler’s design is still very much in evidence, but the recent renovation ensures that Cuzco is a charming and very appealing property. Contemporary Annexe The large brick studio/annexe sits at the northern end of the garden and in the centre of the building is a good sized kitchenette, with a large open reception area at the eastern end. At the western end is a very well equipped workshop and paint store with good storage above. To the south, there is a large paved area for entertaining or Al Fresco dining. This studio building would be suitable for a host of uses and there is also a garden store that houses the gardening machinery in the north-eastern corner of the rear garden. Gardens and Grounds The gardens are another feature of the property being very private and neatly managed. There is a decking area to take full advantage of the sea views adjacent to the back door to the house and there is a fishpond. The front garden contains the parking and is also home to a lovely weeping ash tree. Britain joined with France and Poland, followed by the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth. This group came to be known as ‘the Allies’. In 1941 they were joined by America and Canada, whose armies came to Minehead to train. Britain was badly-equipped for war and there was an urgent need for military training. Existing facilities were outdated and land for tank training was in short supply. North Hill became one of five major new tank training grounds in the country. NORTH HILL AS A MILITARY SITE During the Iron Age (700 BC – 43 AD), and the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I North Hill was considered an important military site. A beacon was set up above Selworthy in 1555, and in the late 1800s a large military training camp was established. The area continued as a training ground right up to the First World War.

  • Than 100 Shops and Businesses in Minehead Town Centre and on the Seafront Have Emerged from Lockdown, with Owners Determine
More than 100 shops and businesses in Minehead town centre and on the seafront have emerged from lockdown, with owners determined to make the most of the rest of the summer season. Meanwhile, although coronavirus has scuppered plans for what would have been the biggest array of floral decorations ever seen in the town centre, business leaders and councillors remain determined to make the shopping streets as attractive as possible, with bunting going up in the town soon. There are also hopes that the pandemic could have a silver lining for some local traders. Minehead BID manager Andrew Hopkins told us how, during lockdown, scores of people had continued to support local traders who had been selling online or offering home delivery services. He said; “Many local people have been absolutely astonished at the range of goods and services that were, and still are, available locally across Minehead. There is now a very good chance that customers will remain loyal to those businesses who kept residents supplied with essentials when normal trading was effectively suspended. With its broad and airy main street leading down to the sea front, and very few points of conflict between pedestrians and cars, Minehead offers one of the safest and most pleasant shopping experiences in the south west – along with a really impressive range of independent shops and businesses. Shopping in Minehead really is a pleasure and I think lockdown has highlighted to many local people just how fortunate they are to live where they live.” Keep in touch with what’s happening in and around Minehead by checking out and following Visit Minehead on Facebook and Instagram.

  • Somerset Geology-A Good Rock Guide
SOMERSET GEOLOGY-A GOOD ROCK GUIDE Hugh Prudden The great unconformity figured by De la Beche WELCOME TO SOMERSET Welcome to green fields, wild flower meadows, farm cider, Cheddar cheese, picturesque villages, wild moorland, peat moors, a spectacular coastline, quiet country lanes…… To which we can add a wealth of geological features. The gorge and caves at Cheddar are well-known. Further east near Frome there are Silurian volcanics, Carboniferous Limestone outcrops, Variscan thrust tectonics, Permo-Triassic conglomerates, sediment-filled fissures, a classic unconformity, Jurassic clays and limestones, Cretaceous Greensand and Chalk topped with Tertiary remnants including sarsen stones-a veritable geological park! Elsewhere in Mendip are reminders of coal and lead mining both in the field and museums. Today the Mendips are a major source of aggregates. The Mesozoic formations curve in an arc through southwest and southeast Somerset creating vales and escarpments that define the landscape and clearly have influenced the patterns of soils, land use and settlement as at Porlock. The church building stones mark the outcrops. Wilder country can be found in the Quantocks, Brendon Hills and Exmoor which are underlain by rocks of Devonian age and within which lie sunken blocks (half-grabens) containing Permo-Triassic sediments. The coastline contains exposures of Devonian sediments and tectonics west of Minehead adjoining the classic exposures of Mesozoic sediments and structural features which extend eastward to the Parrett estuary. The predominance of wave energy from the west and the large tidal range of the Bristol Channel has resulted in rapid cliff erosion and longshore drift to the east where there is a full suite of accretionary landforms: sandy beaches, storm ridges, salt marsh, and sand dunes popular with summer visitors.

  • Problem Oriented Policing Working in Partnership to Create a Safer
SAFER HOLIDAY WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE A SAFER HOLIDAY ENVIRONMENT AVON AND SOMERSET CONSTABULARY, PORTISHEAD, ENGLAND, 1999 SUMMARY: The Butlins Family Entertainment Resort, Minehead is a holiday complex standing on a site of 165 acre. It is home to 20 alcohol outlets operating under the umbrella of one Residential On-Licence and over a number of years transposed from a family holiday venue to one that catered for a diverse market. In essence it is a small town without the norms, values and relationships of a traditional community. Every night is a PARTY NIGHT! At the beginning of 1997 there was a coincidental change of local management at both Butlins and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary. Forming an alliance there was a recognition that positive action had to be taken to address the crime problem that existed at the resort predominantly in the categories of burglary, theft, criminal damage, assault, theft of and from motor vehicles and the misuse of drugs. A new beat was created that was co-terminus with the boundaries of the resort and a beat officer selected who possessed the necessary qualities to tackle a long term project and forge ahead if confronted with difficulties. He was empowered and assured the support of the Constabulary in his interaction with Butlins at both operational and strategic levels. Over a period of two years the Constabulary and Butlins worked closely together addressing environmental factors, policies, practices and staff training at the resort that collectively contributed to a 71.5% reduction in crime over that period. Throughout, the SARA model for problem solving was utilised and regularly revisited to generate a series of creative responses that were introduced into the resort.
