During the 19th century, horses were the main On August 1st that year the Newark stage was form of transport. As is the way with animals, proceeding through Burton Joyce and as it was they were unpredictable and accidents were passing, George jumped up onto the iron step common. at the back of the coach. After about a quarter of a mile he jumped off and another lad quickly Even a very well trained horse could shy or bolt repeated the same trick. Each of the lads did at sudden noises making them difficult to stop, this twice until the coach was about a mile no matter how well they were handled. Most outside the village. people were aware of the risks but over time would become careless and overconfident. Two George then tried a third attempt, but this time cases were reported in the papers in Burton one of the coach wheels caught his leg and Joyce the same year. Clearly it wasn’t just towns carried him round once before throwing him where these accidents occured. on his back in front of the wheel. The wheel immediately passed over his stomach and Richard Sharpe regularly travelled through the lower abdomen as well as smashing his ribs village with his horse and cart. His route was so and breaking his back. Sadly, George died from regular that the horse knew its own way home the injuries he sustained at the scene and as a at the end of the day. Richard had been sitting result an inquest was called for the following on the cart with the horse proceeding on its own day at the Wheat Sheaf pub in the village. It without any reins or anyone leading the animal, condemned the practice of jumping on coaches it was just finding its own way. Just like driving for a ride and found a verdict of accidental a car without a steering wheel. Fine if nothing death, all of which was reported and reinforced distracted the horse, but if this happened you in the Nottingham Journal the same day. would have no means of stopping and disaster could occur.

This type of action wasn’t that uncommon at the time. Often people got home from the pub after a few too many drinks thanks to their well trained animal. However on this occasion Richard was charged with what we would today call dangerous driving when he was stopped in the centre of Burton Joyce. In November 1828, he was fined 10/- as well as costs, a goodly sum in those days. Even today this dangerous stunt still takes place In the same year as the incident with Richard on modern coaches. Sharpe, a group of lads including 7yr old George Mason, were taking turns to carry out a prank. A common practice, especially amongst young boys at the time, was to hitch a ride by hanging onto the back of a passing cart or coach.

Literacy Volunteers

Registered Charity No. 1167357 Literacy Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help primary school children with their reading and communication skills. Volunteers read and play word games with selected children on a one-to-one basis away from the classroom, to give them confidence and help them enjoy reading and communicating. Volunteers need to be able to commit to visiting a local school on the same morning or afternoon each week (for at least a year) and their own transport would be an advantage but is not essential. They do not need any formal qualifications – training and ongoing support is provided. Volunteers should like children, enjoy reading, be patient, flexible and reliable. Volunteers will be vetted through the Disclosure and Barring Service. If you are interested in this rewarding and fun role, please visit their website for more information www. literacyvolunteers.org.uk or ring 0115 876 5474 or email [email protected].
