ANTONI ZABORSKI and HIS Collector's PASSION
LIETUVOS ARCHEOLOGIJA. 2013. T. 39, p. 309–342. ISSN 0207-8694 ANTONI ZABORSKI AND HIS COLLECtor’S PASSION MARIA KRAJEWSKA The article tells about the ‘keen collector’ and amateur archaeologist, Antoni Zaborski, a resident of Pašušvys (Pol. Poszuszwie) (now Kėdainiai District). He had collections of archaeological objects, medals, coins, artwork, weapons, early editions, armour, china, and glass as well as an interesting ethnographic collection and a bibliological collection. A. Zaborski’s unexpected encounter with archaeology and the awareness of his own ignorance in this field persuaded him to seek out people who could help him remedy these shortcomings as well as offer support and expert advice. He corresponded with Erazm Majewski, the best known archaeologist in the Kingdom of Poland, and made many requests for specialist literature, tips, and advice. The texts of these letters are given in the Appendix. Keywords: history of archaeology, Antoni Zaborski collection, letters to Erazm Majewski, Ludwik Krzywicki, Pašušvys (Pol. Savo laiškuose A. Zaborskis teiravosi specialiosios literatūros, patarimų ir konsultacijų. Šių laiškų tekstai pateikiami straipsnio priede. Reikšminiai žodžiai: archeologijos istorija, Antano Zaborskio kolekcija, laiškai Erazmui Majewskiui, Ludwikas Krzywickis, Pašušvys (Kėdainių r.). -
Economic Structure and Key Partnerships of Vilnius Jews from the Second Half of the 17Th Century to the End of the 18Th1

The article focuses on the economic partnerships and patronages formed by Jews in Vilnius. It also highlights the importance of the immediate hinterland for their business opportunities. The Jewish community in Vilnius, the biggest in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) since the 1700s, has not attracted similar historiographical attention2 for its eco- nomic history as some of the smaller communities in GDL.3 Out of the available works about the history of the Vilnius Jewish community, perhaps Israel Cohen4 provid- ed the most comprehensive analyses of its economic situation. He had access to some of the communal documents, which gave interesting insights into daily economic life, communal provisions, and competition with the Christian artisans (although it could be argued this was slightly exaggerated). The competitive nature of the community’s economic life was also the focus of extensive work done by Jurgita Verbickienė.5 How- ever, as she mostly relied on legal documents and litigations, her work emphasized both the normative and competitive side of the Jews’ economic life in Vilnius. -

Resources Concerning the History of Polish Jews in Castle Court Records of the 17Th and 18Th Centuries in the Central State Historical Archives in Kyiv and Lviv

The author emphasizes the importance of these sources for research on the history and culture of Polish Jews in the 17th and 18th centuries. He also specifies the types of documents related to Jewish issues authenticated in these books (e.g. manifestations and lawsuits, declarations of the Radom Tribunal), as well as current source publications and internet databases containing selected documents from Ukrainian archives. The Central State Historical Archive in Lviv (CDIAL) (known as the Bernadine Ar- chive) and the Central State Historical Archive in Kyiv (CDIAUK) both have exten- sive collections of records of the so-called castle courts (sądy grodzkie), also known as local Starost courts (sądy starościńskie) for the nobility: from the Bełz and Ruthe- nian Voivodeships in the Lviv archive; and from the Łuck, Podolia, Kyiv, and Bracław Voivodeships in the Kyiv archive. This is particularly important because – in the light of Jewish population counts taken in 1764–1765 for the purpose of poll tax assessment – these areas were highly populated by Jews. -

The Affair of Ostrog
THE AFFAIR OF OSTROG AN EPISODE IN MALTOo,POLISH RELATIONS IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTUR Y By RODERICK CAVALIERO In the days of the mediaeval Catholicity of Europe. the Order of Kn.ights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem held lands in countties outside the narrower compass to which it was reduced by the Reformation, but by 1700 the Tongue of England was defunct, and the Priory of Dacia, which had included commanderies in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, had dis,' appeared, In the Tongue of Germany, the Priory of Brandenburg had.rurned Lutheran and the Priory of Poland dw.indled away In that last century however, whose bounderies had expanded and contracted with such be" wildering rapidity in the turbulent years following the union with the kipgdom of Lithuania in 1569, two commanderies remained; Posen and Stolowitz, the second in the jus~patTOnatus of the RadziwiU fam.ily. The Commanders took their seats in the Chapter of the Priory of Bohemia. Other commanderies, once part of Poland, had been absorbed into the dominions of her neighbours or lost to the Turks; alone these two remainQ ed, a poor incentive to the nobility of that enormous and fiercely Catholic nation to enrol themselves in the Order of St John. But within twenty years of the Order's expulsion from Malta and Poland's final partition, the Knights Hospitaller were once more to turn to that leviathan country as a recruiting ground. The cause of this nearly two centuries' delay was a celebrated lawQsuit, known to both, the Maltese and Polish ChanceIleries as The Affair of Ostrog. -

Has the memory been erased? In communist Poland (1945-1989) an entire governmental machinery was engaged in erasing memories. Despite this the remembrance has endured. Is it important today, that Skowronek was sold after a successful bison hunt or that during the Nazi occupation (1939-1945) the resistant movement received weapons by means of a carriage drawn by four grey Arabians? “No”, some will say. But without testimonies there would be no history. And great history comes from seemingly small events. The Amomos in the Byzantine Chant: a Diachronical Approach with Emphasis on Musical Settings of the 19Th and 20Th Centuries
DOI: 10.2478/ajm-2018-0002 Artes. Journal of Musicology no. 17-18 2018 24-73 The Amomos in the Byzantine chant: a diachronical approach with emphasis th th on musical settings of the 19 and 20 centuries DIMOS PAPATZALAKIS Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Greece∗ Abstract: The book of the Psalms constitutes the main source from where the Offices of the Orthodox church draw their stable parts. It has been diachronically one of the most used liturgical books of the cathedral and the monastic rite. In this paper we focus on the Psalm 118, which is well known under the designation “Amomos”. In the first part of our study we look for the origin of the book of the Psalms generally. Afterwards we present the Offices in which the Amomos is included, starting from the Byzantine era and the use of the Amomos in the cathedral and the monastic services. Then, we negotiate the question of its use in the post-Byzantine era. In the next section we quote the most important settings of the Byzantine, post-Byzantine and new- Byzantine composers in Constantinople, Smyrna and Thessaloniki, as well as some evidence of their lives and their musical works. In the next section we introduce some polyprismatic analyses for the verses of the first stanza of the Amomos, which are set to music in 19th and 20th centuries. After some comparative musicological analyses of the microform of the compositions or interpretations, we comment on the music structure of the settings of Amomos in their liturgical context. Our study concludes with some main observations, as well as a list of the basic sources used to write this paper. -

Życie i twórczości Stanisława Bukowskiego (1904–1979), published in 2009. The author presents the less known activity of Bukowski as an architect, town planner and conservator of monuments in Vilnius and its area in the years 1936–1945. A portrait of Stanisław Bukowski by Krystyna Wróblewska, 1941, from the collection of Joanna Łempicka Krystyna Wróblewska, Stanisławo Bukowskio portretas, 1941 Stanisław Bukowski [illus. 1] was an architect and urban planner, who earned his reputation in Polish historiography as the person behind the restoration of monuments destroyed during World War II in Białystok. The restoration of the late baroque residence of the Branicki family became his opus magnum. Yet before he arrived in Białystok in April 1945, he had spent nearly ten years living in Vilnius. Bukowski is the only architect from Białystok whose life and work have been chronicled in a monograph1. It is a summary of the research based on previous publications devoted to the architect.
