This thesis examines the way we view our engagement with the materiality of the world around us, by looking at the work of philosopher Jane Bennet on vibrant materiality and author Tove Jansson. Bennet presents an argument that matter can be analysed as active and vibrant. While Western philosophers are used to viewing matter as passive and dead, seeing it as active makes space for different engagement with matter. One of the ways we can start engaging with matter, once we stop thinking of it as passive and dead, is through the lens of ethics. My aim in this thesis is to use Bennet’s and Jansson’s work as a way to consider matter as active and included in the ethical frameworks of the Western philosophical canon. Jansson in her children’s book Moominpappa at Sea shows a possibility for looking at the material world through this ethical lens. This thesis will put these works in conversation by reading both as philosophical works that have nuanced engagement with the topic of how we can be in community with the things that surround us.

  • Tove Jansson's Character Studies for the Moomin
INTRODUCTION by Tom Devlin, Creative Director at Drawn & Quarterly In 2011, I went to Helsinki and was lucky enough to tour Tove Jansson’s studio. She lived in the same large studio for fifty-seven years. It was easy to picture Tove there. I saw the table she used to write at; I saw the wood-burning stove she used to heat her house during the long winters; I saw the shelves and shelves of books—many her own, or her favorites by other authors, and even the hand-lettered scrapbooks her mother, Signe, made where she stored the strips she clipped from the newspaper. I saw the tiny alcove with the even tinier bed she had slept in for years. It was surprising how modest the whole place was. As far as I knew she was Finland’s greatest literary celebrity, and yet she had lived such a simple life. Of course, I should have known this before I stepped over the threshold. It’s in her books. It’s visually manifest in her comics. The Moomins them- selves live modest lives. They have many adventures but home is simple and comforting and there is nothing unnecessary. Rereading these comics just before preparing this book, it struck me just how much of Tove we get in these stories. The Moomin stories (whether in chapter book, picture book, or comic form) all have a similar quality—a quality that is rare in today’s world. There’s a distinctly carefree, individualist vibe mixed with a hint of playful cynicism, a kind of embrace-life-and-live-it-to-its- fullest-but-maybe-don’t-get-too-carried-away ethos.

The red thread of the text is provided by Tove Jansson’s fictional works, and the focus will be on three cases in particular (the magic hat, the invisible girl and the figure of the Groke). The article sets out from the phenom- enological distinction between the sensible expression, on the one hand, and the expressed content, on the other. By focusing on the three cases, the article distinguishes and analyses the fundamental structures of communal life and explicates different ways in which social affirmation can be one-sided or distorted. • Dionysiac Machines: Videogames and the Triumph of The
Dionysiac Machines: videogames and the triumph of the simulacra Seth Giddings, University of the West of England, UK draft version, see: Convergence, 2007; 13; 417 http://con.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/13/4/417 Abstract / This article rethinks concepts of the simulational and the simulacral for popular digital culture. It plays concepts of the modern world as hyperreal against the more modest, pragmatic, but vital, insights of game studies into the literally simulational nature of computer media and videogames. Through a reading of Deleuze’s essay Platonism and the Simulacrum, taking the GameBoy Advance game Advance Wars 2 as a case study, and proposing the significance of automata, it suggests ways of thinking about the artificial and simulacral character of contemporary technoculture and its devices, not as the implosion of reality, but of its production. Keywords /automata / computer games / cyberculture / Deleuze / game studies / simulacra / simulation / technoculture / videogames Plato, by dint of inquiring in the direction of the simulacrum, discovers, in the flash of an instant as he leans over its abyss, that the simulacrum is not simply a false copy, but that it calls into question the very notions of the copy . and of the model. (Deleuze, 1983: 47) Whomper hunted for the marmalade. ‘Perhaps jam will do just as well’, he said and tried to take the lid off a jam-pot. ‘Painted plaster,’ stated the Mymble’s daughter. She took an apple and chewed at it. ‘Wood,’ she said. Little My laughed. But Whomper felt worried. All the things around him were false. Their pretty colours were a sham, and everything he touched was made of paper or wood or plaster.
