GARRIDO,1 JAMES W. WILEY,2,4 AND GEORGE B. REYNARD3 ABSTRACT.—We examined the complex of populations of the Loggerhead Kingbird (Tyrannus caudifasciatus), a West Indian endemic. We separate populations in Puerto Rico and Isla Vieques (T. taylori), and Hispaniola (T. gabbii) as distinct species. Subspecific distinction is assigned to populations in Cuba, Isla de Pinos, and Cuban satellites (T. caudifasciatus caudifasciatus); Cayman Islands (T. c. caymanensis); Jamaica (T. c. jamaicensis); and the Bahamas (T. c. bahamensis)on the basis of differences in plumage coloration and pattern, size, vocalizations, and distribution. Tyrannus melancholicus is commonly known as the tropical kingbird (Fig. 1). The tropical kingbird is very similar and slightly bigger than most kingbirds. It can be differentiated from other species mostly by the kind of call they make, their bill sizes and the tail pattern. The tropical kingbird has a reddish orange patch on its crown which is mostly concealed (Fig. 3). Both the male and female look very alike. The female weighs slightly more than the male, and the crown patch is slightly larger in the male than the female. Its average wingspan is about 12cm. It has a slightly notched brownish black tail. The tail is long, about 18cm in length. The edges of the covert wings and tail appear to be whitish grey. The head appears to be grey with darker cheeks. The neck area is whitish. The chest area is olive green with the rest of the under body yellow. It has a large black bill and feet. The iris is dark brown. The bird’s distribution formerly encompassed the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands, but it has been extirpated from that portion of its former range and is now considered Endangered in Cuba. We collected and examined data on the species’ distribution, relative abundance, habitat preferences, food resources, and reproductive biology in eastern Cuba. This entailed systematic searches in the study area, as well as more intensive sampling in three known locations using a se- ries of line transects oriented along forest conservation gradients to determine relative abundance and habitat preferences of the species. Vegetation variables including canopy height, ground cover, canopy cover, and foliage density were estimated in sections of the transects. The Giant Kingbird was found to be most abundant in secondary rainforest at Monte Iberia, with 4.0 individuals/km.

Bahama Woodstar (Photo by participant Doug Hanna) This was another enjoyable island-hopping adventure with a fun group, excellent birding, and delicious food. It all started on the island of Abaco with a visit to Abaco Island National Park and our first Cuban Parrots perched in the pine trees and a Bahama Yellowthroat skulking in the understory. Bahama Palm Shores was also very good for parrots and West Indian Woodpecker, but lunch at Pete's Pub and "sittin' on the dock of the bay" in Cherokee Sound were also memorable. On to Eleuthera via our trusty Caravan, and within an hour we were looking at a pair of Kirtland's Warblers and our first Great Lizard-Cuckoo -- not too bad. But, again, lunch at Tippy's looking at quite possibly the prettiest beach in the world may have stolen the show, though we really enjoyed watching the sunset at The Cove! This was also the first year we offered a visit to Andros in search of the Bahama Oriole, a recent split from Greater Antillean Oriole. That turned out to be no problem, and we found its nest in the process. Turns out our group thought the Great Lizard-Cuckoo was the coolest thing since sliced bread, and I agree. It took home top honors, but it was in good company with Bahama Woodstar (female on the nest or maybe the male on Eleuthera?), and those parrots.
