1 BWTB Annual Mothers Day Show OPEN The Beatles - Your Mother Should Know - Magical Mystery Tour Recorded 22nd August 1967 at Chappell Recording Studios London (1st of two) Abbey Road was booked on this day so they went to another George Martin used studio owned by the Chappell Publishing Co. also in London. Lead vocal Paul The Beatles - Mother Nature’s Son - The Beatles 2 (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Another Paul McCartney solo performance for the “White Album.” Paul remembers writing the song at his father’s home in Liverpool and that it was inspired by Nat “King” Cole’s recording of “Nature Boy.” After the other Beatles went home on the evening of August 9, 1968, Paul went through 25 live performances of the song, each featuring his vocal and his Martin D-28 acoustic guitar. Take 24 was deemed the best. Overdubbing took place on August 20 with Paul playing drums and timpani, double-tracking his lead vocal at the end of the song, and adding a second acoustic guitar part. George Martin’s brass arrangement was also added to the mix. John Lennon – Mother – Plastic Ono Band ‘70 Originally started in England, the song’s composition was completed in California (during the famous “Primal Scream” therapy with Dr. Janov). This particular track explored John’s therapy head-on, and it set the musical and lyrical tone for the rest of the album. George Harrison had a great affection for this tune, as he sang the brief a cappella version during an interview on Good Morning Australia in 1982. It was briefly considered as a single, but John vetoed it. But it still managed to win the Ivor Novello award for being the ‘Most Performed Work Of The Year’, beating Yesterday into second place. But they couldn’t be bothered to go to the awards ceremony, so Ross MacManus ended up singing it instead (Elvis Costello’s dad!). Following the disastrous 1966 world tour the individual Beatles took control of their hectic schedule. They were no longer in a rush to do anything. In September 1966, Brian Epstein informed EMI and Capitol that there would be no new Beatles album, and quite possibly no single, ready in time for the 1966 Christmas season. EMI quickly assembled a 16-track greatest hits album (“A Collection Of Beatles Oldies”). In the U.S., Capitol did not release a hits compilation and instead waited impatiently for a new single. The band reconvened in late November to begin work on their next LP. With no deadlines, they simply brought in new songs as they dreamt them up.     SPOOFS The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash In the 1970s, Eric Idle, a former member of the legendary British com- edy team Monty Python, featured a Beatles parody song called “It Must Be Love” on Rutland Weekend Television, his own television show on BBC-2. The song had been written by Neil Innes, who had previously worked with Monty Python and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The song was performed by ‘The Rutles’, a Beatles look-alike band featuring Neil Innes as the John Lennon character, and Eric Idle as the Paul McCartney character (vgl. Harry 1985: 69). In October 1976, the parody was shown on America’s NBC TV’s show Saturday Night Live as a se- quel to the running gag of a Beatles reunion for $3,000. The parody went down so well that Eric Idle and Neil Innes decided to produce a feature program about The Rutles for television. Idle, who was a close friend of George Harrison, was allowed to watch Neil Aspinall’s unreleased do- cumentary about The Beatles, called The Long and Winding Road. Aspi- nall’s film featured a bulk of famous footage of The Beatles, from their first televised performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last group performance on the roof of their Apple business building. Idle u- sed The Long and Winding Road as a model for his fake-documentary about The Rutles and basically re-told the history of The Beatles pro- jected upon this imaginary rock band, adding essential elements of par- ody and the Pythonesque sense of surreal humor.

    WRITING ASSIGNMENT Record Review You are going to write a record review of an album that is deemed significant in Rock Music. A list of groups/artists can be accessed by clicking on link below http://www.rollingstone.com/ news/story/5938174/the_rs_500_greatest_albums_of_all_time Criteria: Title Page Name, word count, course number, section number, etc. Introduction: Write a biography of the group you're critiquing. This should include the year the group/artist began recording, a list of and year of recordings, billboard chart positions, and any awards, Grammys, etc. www.allmusic.com is a great source for biographical information. Section 1 You will need to include all of the specifics of the recording, record label, producer(s), year, and dates of recording. Listen to the album several times as if you were a record critic and write an overview of the album, i.e. style of music, mood, highlights, lowlights, etc. Here are some things to consider: Is there a unifying theme throughout the album? Are there contrasting themes? If so, what are they? Is there enough variety musically in your opinion? What is it about this album in particular that makes it stand out? Section 2 Pick four songs and discuss them in more detail. Discuss your likes and dislikes as we have in relation to the journal entries in class but you will need to go into more detail.
