It is generally used to index the world medical literature. Within the hierarchy of MeSH, a concept may appear as narrower concepts of more than one broader concept. For example, pneumonia is listed as a respiratory tract infection as well as a lung disease. MeSH forms the basis for the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) also developed by NLM (see Panel 6.3).
