The 500 who remained remind me of marathon runners. It makes me think of getting together an army of runners, of turning away all those who are not really keen on the idea of running 26 miles, of then offering a guarantee of success in any other event. There would not be many left—but there would be some. It is an argument by those who are not fully in sympathy with the decathlon that this competition attracts only those who cannot be the best in any one single event.
