Drum Major Gordon Jelly by Allan Cha5o, 1994 Gordon Jelly in 1929, his first year with the Dalzell Highland Pipe Band, age fourteen. In 1915, Alexander Gordon Hamilton Jelly was born in the town of Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. In his early years he developed a keen interest in music, and at the age of twelve, while aFending the local 5th Company of The Boys Brigade, it was only natural that he was aFracted to their pipe band, and in parHcular, to the snare drummers. LiFle did the pipe band world know that this was the start of a foundaHon that was to become part of the history and the development of pipe band drumming. So it was in 1927 that Gordon decided he wanted to learn to play the snare drum. What beFer start could a keen young lad have? The BaFalion pipe band drummers were being tutored by the famous Jimmy Catherwood, who at the Hme was the Drum Corporal of the Dalzell Highland Pipe Band. This band, under Pipe Major William Jack and Leading Drummer Willie Craig, was making a name for itself in ScoSsh Open Grade CompeHHons. Dalzell Highland was formed when a group of piping enthusiasts met in 1910 on the "Old Calder Brig" in the steel town of Motherwell. Each member agreed to contribute five shillings a week - a considerable sum in those days - towards the band for the purchase of uniforms and instruments. The first pracHces were held outdoors on the banks of the River Calder. The band eventually gained the support of several generous "honorary members," one of whom was David Colville of the Dalzell Steel and Iron Works.

Summer is almost upon us once again and the Ulster- Scots Agency is gearing up for a few busy months of festivals and outdoor events. This month we will be taking part in the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival at the Titanic Dock & Pump-House and Thompson Dry Dock at Queens Island with a range of Ulster-Scots activities (including the Agency’s juvenile pipe band). We will use the event from May 24-26 to launch our long awaited Ulster-Scots Innovators Gallery. You can read more about the festival on Page 7. The Agency will also be present at the Ballyclare May Fair (May 20-24) and the Northern Ireland Countryside Festival (May 31- June 1), which has been relocated this year to Balmoral Park in Lisburn. History of the World Pipe Band Championships 2018
THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS The World Pipe Band Championships (WPBC) is the main event in the annual calendar of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA). The Championships have a long history stretching back to 1906, but were not organised by the RSPBA (then SPBA) until 1947. Initially the Championships were part of the Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon, Argyll. Since 1947 they have been held in various UK locations but in recent years the venue has always been Glasgow Green, in Glasgow, organised by the RSPBA in conjunction with the City of Glasgow Council and its commercial arm, Glasgow Life. The event can attract up to 230-240 individual pipe bands, approximately 60 of which can be from other countries, reflecting the world-wide interest in Scotland’s national music. The Grade 1 Finals, the premier competition, are filmed by BBC Scotland and are also now streamed world-wide live over the internet. It is estimated that overall the WPBC contribute at least £20 million to the Glasgow economy. That figure is likely to be higher Scotland-wide as many of the overseas pipe bands and their followers take the opportunity to extend their stay to visit other parts of the country. Apart from the hospitality sector, many other Scottish businesses also benefit such as manufacturers of bagpipes, and highland dress and equipment suppliers. The Championships now also are the pinnacle to a week of piping events in Glasgow as they coincide with the end of the Piping Live Festival which is run separately by the National Piping Centre.

Drum Major Alexander McCormick Drummer, Tutor, Musician Part 2: Alex McCormick’s contribu8on to pipe bands in Northern Ireland and Australia By Allan Cha;o OAM Alexander McCormick with the drumming trophy at the 1952 World Pipe Band Championships, his final year leading the corps of the City of Glasgow Police Pipe Band There are many names that come up when one thinks about influen5al pipe band drummers, and certainly the la9er part of the twen5eth century has many. But one must go back to the early days of pipe band compe55on and the dedica5on and passion of key folks who were as much responsible for the current thriving state of pipe band music as any modern figure. One such name, Alexander McCormick, has always appeared when one examines the history of pipe bands, pipe band music, and pipe band educa5on. In Part 11 of this ar5cle on the life of Alexander McCormick we learn of his contribu5ons to the early days of pipe bands in Northern Ireland and in Australia. THE COLLEGE LAUNCHES All members [of the SPBA Pipe Band College] appeared to be very enthusias5c to at last get things under way with the full support and encouragement of the Associa5on. Soon, the branches were to commence running tutorial classes for all levels of the cer5ficate courses. As both principals saw the need to establish a firm educa5onal program with a set format, all members of the advisory panel agreed to be examined for the various college levels of cer5fica5on so that they would then be well qualified to teach and then examine all candidates within their own branch areas.

AchievementsApril 2013 ! Sponsored By Govan High School Issue No. 18 Govan Schools and Community Pipe Band The Govan Weavers Society, with the support and assistance of the members of the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band, launched a new initiative with a presentation at The Pearce Institute on Wednesday 20 March. This project will provide piping and drumming lessons for all schools in Govan with the objective of creating a new Govan Schools / Community Pipe Band. The project will involve Riverside Primary, St Saviour’s Primary, Pirie Park Primary, St Constantine’s Primary and Govan High School. Pupils who wish to take part in this initiative attended with their parents for an outline of the project and the benefits of piping and band membership. Lessons will initially take place in each of the primary schools with the supervision of teachers and members of the band. At a point when the students are ready to form a band, lessons will be centralised either in one of the participating schools or at the Pearce Institute at the centre of Govan. At that stage pipes and drums at a subsidised cost will be provided by the Piping Trust to continue the lessons into full instruments When ready for forming a band, a band uniform will be provided continuing the red and black colours of Govan in a Macleod tartan, linking with Norman Macleod after whom the MacLeod Hall is named and George Macleod the founder of the Iona Community. The Trust is aware of the time and commitment necessary to achieve band level and intends to provide encouragement by enabling the band Govan High on the national stage to perform when ready, or in 2015 at the latest, at Tartan Day parade on Here’s an interesting excerpt from Iain White’s blog on the ghs100 6th Avenue New York or some equivalent event.
