    Traditional Music of Scotland

    Traditional Music of Scotland A Journey to the Musical World of Today Abstract Immigrants from Scotland have been arriving in the States since the early 1600s, bringing with them various aspects of their culture, including music. As different cultures from around Europe and the world mixed with the settled Scots, the music that they played evolved. For my research project, I will investigate the progression of “traditional” Scottish music in the United States, and how it deviates from the progression of the same style of music in Scotland itself, specifically stylistic changes, notational changes, and changes in popular repertoire. I will focus on the relationship of this progression to the interactions of the two countries throughout history. To conduct my research, I will use non-fiction sources on the history of Scottish music, Scottish culture and music in the United States, and Scottish immigration to and interaction with the United States. Beyond material sources, I will contact my former Scottish fiddle teacher, Elke Baker, who conducts extensive study of ethnomusicology relating to Scottish music. In addition, I will gather audio recordings of both Scots and Americans playing “traditional” Scottish music throughout recent history to compare and contrast according to their dates. My background in Scottish music, as well as in other American traditional music styles, will be an aid as well. I will be able to supplement my research with my own collection of music by close examination. To culminate my project, I plan to compose my own piece of Scottish music that incorporates and illustrates the progression of the music from its first landing to the present.

    Drum Major Gordon Jelly by Allan Cha5o, 1994 Gordon Jelly in 1929, his first year with the Dalzell Highland Pipe Band, age fourteen. In 1915, Alexander Gordon Hamilton Jelly was born in the town of Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. In his early years he developed a keen interest in music, and at the age of twelve, while aFending the local 5th Company of The Boys Brigade, it was only natural that he was aFracted to their pipe band, and in parHcular, to the snare drummers. LiFle did the pipe band world know that this was the start of a foundaHon that was to become part of the history and the development of pipe band drumming. So it was in 1927 that Gordon decided he wanted to learn to play the snare drum. What beFer start could a keen young lad have? The BaFalion pipe band drummers were being tutored by the famous Jimmy Catherwood, who at the Hme was the Drum Corporal of the Dalzell Highland Pipe Band. This band, under Pipe Major William Jack and Leading Drummer Willie Craig, was making a name for itself in ScoSsh Open Grade CompeHHons. Dalzell Highland was formed when a group of piping enthusiasts met in 1910 on the "Old Calder Brig" in the steel town of Motherwell. Each member agreed to contribute five shillings a week - a considerable sum in those days - towards the band for the purchase of uniforms and instruments. The first pracHces were held outdoors on the banks of the River Calder. The band eventually gained the support of several generous "honorary members," one of whom was David Colville of the Dalzell Steel and Iron Works.

    Projecting the Nation: Constructions of Scotland in Film Since 1979 Emily Torricelli PhD University of York Theatre, Film and Television January 2016 Abstract This thesis examines questions of the continued significance of national cinemas and identities, focussing on the case of Scottish cinema. As a small, devolved nation with relative autonomy from the United Kingdom, Scotland presents an interesting case for how films are labelled with a national identity, as Scottish films can also often be understood in a British, European, and even global context. Rather than attempting to construct a working model of Scottish cinema based on representation or production context, I ask how films have been constructed as Scottish. I approach the concepts of Scotland and Scottish film as sets of meanings that are subject to change over time and in different contexts. This facilitates a perspective which asks in what ways Scotland and Scottishness is constructed in film. I examine how multiple identities are balanced in the filmic construction of Scotland first by considering how Scottish films—both those made in and which are about Scotland—from the early 1980s to the present construct Scottish identities.     Representing History The Pianist To Kill A King Why use film? History is currently `in vogue’ with the media. Documentaries cover the five terrestrial channels, historical non-fiction tops the best selling charts and Simon Schama, Michael Wood and David Starkey are now superstar presenters. Time Team and Restoration positively encourage us to take a `hands on’ approach – we can now affect what happens to our heritage directly. Historical films are also as popular as ever, with Pirates of the Caribbean currently topping the UK Box Office (although historians may argue exactly which historical period it is from!) and there are still many costume drama classics that draw in audiences across the world. Films that attempt to show history are sometimes derided by historians and critics for their lack of accuracy and sometimes hilariously bad casting - John Wayne as Genghis Khan anyone? However, if we view historical films as documents to begin an investigation, and if we look at how the film itself works, as well as examining how it purports to tell us about the past, the result can be a rewarding and enjoyable journey. A film can capture a feeling for a time; can create a mood and a picture of the past that perhaps, with further historical research and examination of the other contemporary art forms (drama, literature, painting, music etc.) can make that world come to life. © Film Education 2003 1 Curriculum Links The case study films below have been chosen both for their specific links to historical topics but also because of their filmic interest, either as a new take on a particular subject or an innovative way of telling a story.

Summer is almost upon us once again and the Ulster- Scots Agency is gearing up for a few busy months of festivals and outdoor events. This month we will be taking part in the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival at the Titanic Dock & Pump-House and Thompson Dry Dock at Queens Island with a range of Ulster-Scots activities (including the Agency’s juvenile pipe band). We will use the event from May 24-26 to launch our long awaited Ulster-Scots Innovators Gallery. You can read more about the festival on Page 7. The Agency will also be present at the Ballyclare May Fair (May 20-24) and the Northern Ireland Countryside Festival (May 31- June 1), which has been relocated this year to Balmoral Park in Lisburn. More details can be found on Page 11.
