THIS PHOTO was sent in by mili- tary piping researcher Dick Crawford and is one of a number which will be included in his forth- coming book,‘Floo’ers o’ the Forest: Fallen pipers of the Great War’. Photos of a regiment’s pipers rather than the full band were popular at this time. This is most likely the 2nd Bn taken some time around 1914. Judging by the background (palm tree and blinds on the windows) it appears to be shot in a tropical climate - yet the pipers are in home uniform rather than tropi- cal white tunics. There are a number of other interesting items in this portrait; * the pipers are all wearing ‘castle’ shoulder shells similar to the pres- ent-day Guards pattern * long service chevrons are worn on both sleeves (they are the ones at the lower part of the sleeve). Their use on full dress uniform only lasted a short period. * other than the pipe major (who is wearing his rank chevrons on both arms) there are only two lance-corporals * only the pipe major has a ‘stitched’ plaid - the other pipers have the rather scruffy style of scarf plaid.
